Document of the Month February is an iconic month as many landmark events in the journey of typewriters happen to fall in this month. Firstly, it is the month of the birth and the death anniversaries of Christopher Latham Sholes who is believed to have invented typewriter in the late 19th century. Typewriters revolutionised office culture and became a symbol of the status of professional achievement soon. But the advent of computers in late 20th century sounded their death knell. On 1st February 1980, the Apple Computer President Mike Scott wrote an internal memo to all employees, declaring the end of typewriter use at the company. Although computers have completely taken over the place of typewriters today, the nostalgia of their clickety-clack continues to mesmerize to such an extent that February is celebrated as the International Typewriter Appreciation month. Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd. had been 25 years old then in the manufacturing of typewriters since it had successfully manufactured the first All Indian Typewriter in 1955 and it is amazing to observe that the end of the Typewriter era at Apple in United States coincides with the introduction of a new chapter in the manufacturing of typewriters at Godrej in India. This month we are sharing the photographs of the launch and the grand reception of Godrej’ new PB typewriter model at various cities of India around February 1980 and thereon. The typewriter was named after Pirojsha Burjorji Godrej, one of the founders and the consolidator of the Godrej Group. Advertised as – the typewriter ‘With the Light-As-Air Touch’, its features added up to efficiency, durability and reliability, along with design improvements that made it easy to use, maintain and service.

Godrej presents the new PB

The new Godrej PB incorporates design improvements that make it easy to use, maintain and service.

• The shift lock mechanism makes it easy to release the lock either with the right hand or left hand key without effort.

• The typebar guide and ribbon fork are wide and strong—resist wear more effectively.

• The wide paper feed rollers enable easy and uniform paper insertion.

• The escapement assembly is a structurally rigid design with pressure moulded housing to ensure greater durability.

• You can change carriages on the new Godrej PB in seconds to match the paper widths. There are 3 sizes to choose from !

• The retractable line space lever enables safe storage.

• And there are 46 keys—with 6 useful signs!

The new Godrej PB offers the optimum combination of light touch and speed. And a number of features which add up to an efficient, durable and reliable typewriter.

The intermediate connecting links on the key lever reduce vibration, eliminate clashing and increase speed.

The ribbon track selector allows three positions, thus giving 33% more ribbon usage.

The ribbon movement is specially designed for high sensitivity and the key lever mechanism is simple and robust. So that you get failproof automatic reversals, reduced load—and a light-as-air touch for typing.

Linear ball bearings facilitate smooth and easy carriage movement.

Note : In view of the Godrej policy of continuous development and improvement, the dimensions and specifications may be changed without prior notice or obligation.
