INTRODUCTION
In recent years the Italian Culture Council has receivedrepeated requests to provide a guide listing American collegesand universities that offer courses in Italian.
Students planning to take Italian find it difficult toobtain information concerning undergraduate and graduate pro-grams. The information that is available is scattered inUniversity catalogues, government publications and professionaljournals.
In this directory, "Italian in the Colleges and Universitiesof the United States", we have assembled all the information thatshould be made available to students. The following pages listthe colleges and universities which offer introductory courses, undergraduate major and minor programs, graduate courses anddegrees, and study abroad programs in Italy. The data was com-piled from the information received on a questionnaire which wasthen checked against the latest available college and universitycatalogues.
Our object in assembling this material is to provide a rapidand practical guide to course offerings in Italian. Our aim is toserve many: students interested in earning a major or a minor, aMaster of Arts or Doctor of Philosophy degree in Italian; teachersof languages; scholars of comparative literature and culture;people in the fields of Music and the Arts; lay persons interestednot only in the language, but also in the literature and culture ofItaly; people specializing in the fields of international andintercultural affairs.
We wish to express our special thanks to the departmentchairmen who provided information for this directory. Althoughdata for this guide was compiled from many sources, the informa-tion received directly from the institutions was the most helpfulin preparing complete and accurate descriptions. Aware as weare of the numerous demands on the time of university presidentsand department chairmen, we are especially appreciative of theircooperation in helping us prepare this useful guide for students, counselors and the public in general.
Antonio Striano, Jr.Director of Research
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS and SUMMARY
This is the first time in the history of the United States, as faras I have been able to determine, that a guide as complete as this hasbeen published in the field of Italian studies.
Antonio Striano, Director of Research for the Italian Culture Council, did an extraordinarily skillful job in compiling the data for this directory.Mr. Striano sent a letter and a questionnaire to 436 colleges and universi-ties of which over 300 answered (the latest received was on January 9, 1969).The first and second questionnaires were sent out on March 10, 1968 andSeptember 20, 1968 respectively. As late as February 8 of 1969, twenty-sixquestionnaires were sent out to check some conflicting data. All returnedquestionnaires were checked against college catalogues. Where no answer was
received either to the first or second questionnaire, the information hereincame from the latest catalogues available. Over 900 catalogues at YaleUniversity and the New Haven Public Library were used in order to discovercolleges and universities which had introduced Italian since 1965.
The following sources were used to set up a tentative list of insti-tutions teaching Italian: the MLA's 1961, 1963, and 1965 publications"Foreign Language Enrollments in Higher Education"; Dr. Michael De Luca's1965 survey in the June 1966 issue of Italica; a recent survey done by oneof the directors of the Italian Culture Council, Dr. Giulio de Petra's"Fall 1968 Survey of Italian in California Universities and Colleges"; thecollege catalogues; and the announcements, messages, letters regardingnew courses and programs received by the Italian Culture Council since March,
1963. From these sources, Mr. Striano and I drew up a tentative list of436 colleges which offered Italian during the period 1960 to 1968.
It is pertinent to this book to note the following facts revealed byDr. de Petra's "1968 Fall Survey of Italian in California Universities andColleges". The results of Professor De Luca's 1965 survey were used forcomparative purposes. The number of institutions in California offeringItalian more than doubled from 23 in 1965 to 52 in 1968. At the sametime, the number of students increased from 3,727 to 5,207 (even thoughsome questionnaires omitted this point). The number of instructors ofItalian rose from 56 in 1965 to 126 in 1968. These figures certainlyseem to indicate a healthy growth in the field of Italian studies in Cali-
fornia. Nationwide, one can see the same exciting growth. MLA's 1963"Modern Foreign Language Enrollments for Higher Education" reveals on pageii the following comparative registers for Italian: 1960, 11,142: 1961,12,769; 1963, 16,874; De Luca's survey, 1965, 19,923 (considering thatout of 285 colleges contacted, only 222 reported). One is, therefore, struck by the continuous growth of Italian in the United States from1960 to 1968. These increases pointed up the pressing need for a guide inthe field of Italian studies.
The present guide lists 371 colleges, universities and specializedschools offering Italian; 366 of these have introductory courses. Atthe graduate level, 53 are offering M.A. and/or Ph.D. programs. At theundergraduate level, 170 offer a minor and/or major. Study abroadprograms are offered by 86 colleges and universities.
This book is divided into five parts to provide an easy, rapidreference. Part I shows, at a glance, all the levels of instructionavailable in Italian at each institution. Part TI is for graduate studentsinterested in M.A. and/or Ph.D. programs; they should write to the gra,Ju-ate school for the catalogue. For the undergraduate minor and majorprograms in Part III, we thought it advisable to include the titles of allthe courses offered in additon to schematic information regarding graduateand study abroad programs. It is recommended that persons write the univer-sity or college for its catalogue since course titles and credits change, new courses are added, minors and majors introduced, graduate programsinstituted, and study abroad programs arranged. Part TV lists, alphabeti-cally by cities in Italy, the study abroad programs. Part V contains analphabetical indlix of the 371 colleges and universities with city andstate noted. Due to the mobility of university and college presidents, chairmen and professors, the officers of the Italian Culture Councilthought it best to omit all faculty names.
Two blank questionnaires have been included in the last pagesof this directory. We would be most appreciative if non-listed collegesand universities currently teaching Italian would fill one out and sendit to Mr. Antonio Striano, Jr., 49 Sherman Avenue, New Haven, Connecticut06511. When your college expands its offerings, do please let the ItalianCulture Council know.
The preliminary expenses for the preparation of this manual werecovered by the generosity of the following universities and colleges. To
them, we are most grateful for their financial assistance: The Interna-tional Affairs Center of Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana; SmithCollege, Northampton, Massachusetts; Montclair State College, UpperMontclair, New Jersey; Dominican College of San Rafael, San Rafael,California; Wells College, Aurora, New York; Villa Walsh College,Morristown, New Jersey; College of Notre Dame, Belmont, California;University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado; Queen of the Apostles College,Harriman, New York; Lake Erie College, Painesville, Ohio; Cabrini College,Radnor, Pennsylvania; Roosevelt University, Chicago, Illinois; theAmerican Institute for Foreign Study, Greenwich, Connecticut.
I am deeply indebted to the officers and trustees of the ItalianCulture Council, also to Santo Barbagallo, Lena Ferrari, Prof. PierinaCastiglione, Vincent Visceglia, Dr. Giuseppe Cardillo and many ottwrpersons for their help and encouragement.

Notes to course offerings:
1. Offerings shown in a particular catalogue do notnecessarily reflect all the courses being givenin Italian by a college. Some courses are of-fered on an alternate year basis and may appearin the next year's catalogue.
2. Wherever a college checked advance programs onour questionnaire and its catalogue was unavail-able, we could only assume that a full scheduleof courses was being offered to satisfy theparticular program checked.
3. It is interesting to note thatseveral languagedepartments have done away with an undergraduateminor program and are stressing the major one.
4. Although Junior and Community Colleges do notappear in this section, please remember thatmany of them are permitted to transfer undergraduatecredits, particularly in the liberal arts program,to neighboring colleges and universities. Some ofthe Junior Colleges indicated in Part I offer asmany as 16 credits in Italian which may be appliedtowards transfer credits.

PART V" ALPHABETICAL INDEX OF COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES
Please read these notes before using this index:
The following examples present a few of theproblems one meets in trying to arrangean accurate indexing of colleges and universities. We have tried to reduce themargin of error and the understandable confusion in some university systems by indi-cating alternate entries in parentheses or by cross-reference.
1. New York City lists its municipally owned colleges underthe general title of City University of New York. Theofficial abbreviation is CUNY. Therefore, in Part III,Hunter College, Queens College, Brooklyn College andCity College have been placed under CUNY.
2. Similarly, New York State uses the term State Univ-ersity of New York; SUNY is its official abbrevia-tion. Some are SUNY at Albany, SUNY at Buffalo, SUNYat Stonybrook. Others are SUNY, College at Buffalo,SUNY, College at Oswego, SUNY, College at Potsdam, etc.
3. Long Island University:University Center (Formerly Brooklyn Center)C. W. Post CollegeSouthampton
4. College names undergo changes:a. College of the City of New York (CONY) has
changed to City College (CUNY)b. Hunter College of the Bronx is called
Herbert H. Lehman College (CUNY)c. Harpur College (SUNY) is referred to in
the 1965 N.Y.S. Education Department Guideas SUNY at Binghamton
5. To avoid confusion with four-year colleges, we have usedthe term Junior in the title of all two-year colleges; afew junior colleges have become regular four-year colleges.
6. The addresses in Parts III andV are the official ones usedin the 1968 National Zip Code Directory. of the U.S. PostOffice Department.
Missing from this index of institutions offering Italian are some of the following:conservatories, institutes schools of art and design, seminaries, specializedcenters of higher learning, a few colleges and universities. To remedy theselacurse, we have added two questionnaires as the last pages of this directory,

Is Italian Taught at Ivy League Colleges
and sister institutions? is one of our repeated queries. The answer is yes.Italian is taught at Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Pennsylvania,Princeton, Yale and Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke, Radcliffe, Smith, Vassar,Wellesley. In two of them, Harvard and Columbia, Italian has been taught sincethe aar4 1800's. There are over 300 colleges and universities teaching Italianin the United States.
"Survey of Acceptability of Italian"
for the fulfillment of university language requiremenZs was summarized by Prof.Nicholas J. Marino, Secretary of the L. I. chapter of the American Associationof Teachers of Italian (AIM) from a survey conducted some years ago. It pre-sents statements from admissions offices of some thirty instftutions fromdifferent georgraphical areas of the U.S. Writes Prof. Marino: I hope youwill find the attached document helpful in talking to administrators andguidance people. Copies of the survey are available from him at SuffolkCounty Community College, Selden, N.Y. 11784. As far as the writer ofthe Bulletins has been able to determine, all institutions accept any languagetaught at an accredited secondary school. Information to the contrary shouldbe documented and sent to the Italian Culture Council.
Harold T. Enlow, D.D.S.
wrote the follo'iing to Dr. Virgil I. Milani (University of S. Florida, Tampa)"I am most appreciative for the loan of your Italian Dental Journals, particularlythe Clinica Odonto*Protesica Stomatologica. This publication summarizes eacharticle in English, and I regret to say, this is indeed necessary for me to havea proper understanding of the subject.
"As I mentioned to you during one of our recent conversations, I feelso inadequate when I research articles in Italian, and I have often wished thislanguage had been required in my pe-dental studies in college. I sincerelyfeel that no education is complete unless one has been a student of the languages, regardless of the person's field of endeavor,"
