F ()REWORD
The followinL information has been
compiled from the business community to aid you in your
approach toward the discussion of a profession.
These business people have agreed to be resource
speakers.
Before contacting a speaker, please notify your principal.
Each speaker requires a two
week ad-.7ance notice prior to a
discussion.
Check with your speaker to see if he will need you to
provide any audio-visual equipment.
Also, explain to the speaker what the grade level is.
This
will aid him in knowing at
what level to make his presentation.
When requesting a speaker, take
time to see that the
speaker knows where your school is located, titd ask each to re?ort to the
principals offi-e upon arrival at your school.
Field trips are to be arranged by making the request through the principal.
The individual
teacher is responsible for such trips.
Field trips must be on school buses.
The busaa.are available
at 9:15 a.m. and must
be back at the bus garage by 1:30 p.m.
Career Education does not hav'e the
funds to pay for the field trip costs.
Due to a shortage of resource
speakers from certain work fields, some occuportcrus are not c.oered
in this booklet; therfore, if the
teacher would like to have a speaker from one of ttonn areas ccntacJ.
Raymond Dickey, Community Involvement Coordinator, at
924 -8272.
Supplements to this booklet will be sent to youduring the school year.
COMMUNITY I1 VOLVE1ENT COMPONENT
In order that students
receive the maxi-luo benefit of a career education program, a planned working
relationship should exist between
education and the business-industrial community.
.
As an initial, all-important
step, education must communicate with business.
An understanding between
business and educationwill lead to a bridging of the gap which has been prevalent for su:h a long period
of time.
Within any community, large or small, a working
force representing many occupations exists.
Guest
resource speakers
invited spe:ifically to discuss their jobs can be as!red to assist tea:hers in discussing
careers.
Businessmen will now have the opportunity to
discuss topics such as problems that confront business,
present job opportunities,
future job opportunities, on-the-job training, job requirements, and the education
needed that is important for advancement.
In bridging the gap between education
and business, certain steps are necessary.
Businesses in a
community should be grouped into
the fifteen work clusters as described bytthe United States Department
of
Labor.
All fifteen clusters need to be represented in order to have a genuine work force outlook.
Each
business should be contacted and
told about career education.
Businessmen will find the goals of
career
education beneficial to the future
growth of their com9anies.
Personal contact with business leaders
has been found to be most effective.
After the initial contact, each business should be asked to
volunteer resource speakers.
Professional businessmen add greatly to career concepts being taught by
the teacher.
Other organizations that should be sought to furnish guest speakers are military, civil
service, labor organizations, construction firms,
colleges, and universities.
A guest speaker usually will allow the topic to be tape recorded.
This tape can be used by many
classes, and a tape library develops.
A cordial work relationship betufeen the career education program and a local Chamber of Commerce is
beneficial as businesses will be made aware of the concept.
Presentations on career education before local civic, fraternal, social, and ?arent-Teacher
Associations will carry the career message to many individuals who may volunteer their services.
Adequate use of the local newspaper, television station, and radio station will not only inform the
community but could locate speakers.
A community involvement guide can be the end result.
All businesses can be listed according
to
work :lusters, work areas, and contact persons.
This guide will assist the classroom teacher in dis-
cussing any career as the professional r:an be contacted and invited to contribute his professional
knowledge to the educational setting.
