"Hey, this is great. Don't you think so?" asked Leopold.

"It's OK, but I still don't like policemen," sighed Vincent. He sat down and leaned back against the big tree.

Policeman Alvarado walked up with the cold cokes and gaveone to each boy. Sitting down he asked, "OK, Vincent.Do you have any idea what you have to do to berome a policeofficer?"

"Yes, like I told you. All you have to do is show you canpush me around. That's all," said the young boy. He wasfeeling a little different, but wanted not to show it.

"What is happening here today?" asked Leopold.

"We are having some short meetings," said the policeofficer. "Some young people came to learn about policework and we hope that we can tell them about our work andget them in--rested in police work later on."

The boys followed Officer Alvarado into a large room ofthe Center. Several young boys and girls were seated inchairs placed in a semi-circle. Vincent and Leopold satdown too.

"3ood morning, young ladies and gentlemen," began thepolice officer. "I am glad you are here to learn somethingabout police work. It is good work, even though it doeshave problems."

"Problems?" asked Vincent. "You told us liked to be apolice officer."

"I do," answered Officer Alvarado, "but when you are apolice officer yoU often have to do some things that youdo not like to do."

"What kind of things?" asked a girl.

"Well, for one thing, you have to work at night sometimeswhen other people are sleeping. You have .Eo keep them safein their homes and guard places where they work during theday as well. A police officer has to patrol all of thestreets to protect people from bad people who might berobbers, for instance."

"I think that I would be afraid to work at night," saidVincent.

"A police officer is trained to protect himself and others,"said Officer Alvarado. "Also, there are different levelsof police work. You will hear about these later on in mytalk

Officer Alvarado continued with his talk to the group:

"Police officers guard our streets during the night andday. They direct traffic, and they find lost childrenand automobiles."

He had to stop speaking for a moment because everyone waslaughing about the lost children and cars.

"Do they find lost dogs for people, too?" asked Leopold.

"No, that is a job for the dogcatcher," said OfficerAlvarado.

Then he continued: "They also have to know how to rescuepeople who are in trouble, and they guard homes, banks, stores, and other property which bad people may want torob or steal."

A boy in front raised his hand. "Once, I was stuck in adrain pipe and a police officer got me out," he said.

"Well, I know you were happy about that!" Officer Alvaradosaid, "as I said, we do many jobs. A police department isdivided into three parts. A special job is done in eachpart. One part makes sure that people obey the laws in atown or city, and then they must arrest people who do notobey the laws. Police officers in this kind of work wearuniforms and guns, and carry a kind of club known as a"Night Stick," which they use for protection."

"Another part of the department is called the DetectiveDivision. Here the officers dress in street clothing instead

of uniforms. They are sometimes called plainclothes menbecause they hide their guns and police badges and wear suitssuch as other workmen wear to work."

Vincent held up his hand. "I would like to be a policeofficer who directs all the cars and buses and trucks," hesaid.

"Yes, and you would then have a job in the part called theTraffic Division. These officers have special duties suchas directing traffic, and they make sure that people obeythe speed laws and other safety rules. They protect schoolchildren when they must cross streets, and they also ridemotorcycles sometimes to control crowds and lafge groups ofpeople."

"I want to know how you get to be the Chief of Police," said

Leopold.

"You can't be a chief the first thing," laughed OfficerAlvarado. Everybody has to begin as a plain police officer.A police officer who walks a "beat" or drives a squad caror motorcycle is called a patrolman. Such patrolmen knowhow to take care of accidents, crimes, or other things whichhappen on their beat. If you do your job very well, youcan be promoted to Sergeant, and later perhaps, to Lieutenantor Captain.

So if any of you are thinking about becoming apolice officer, you must all study hard and get your high-school education."

"Can girls become police officers?" asked one young lady.
