PREFACE

The original edition of this bibliography was compiled and distributed to all Manitobaschools in order to make quality Canadian materials known to teachers, librarians andadministrators. Since that time the area of publishing for children and young adults inCanada has undergone a period of exciting growth. Although Canadian materials suitablefor some subject areas are stilt limited in quantity, the publication of In Search ofCanadian Materials and its Supplements has proven that more and more quality materialsare available each year. [PLEASE NOTE: Since 1978, In Search of Canadian Materialshas been treated as an annual and thus the practice of issuing supplements discontinued.]

This publication is an aid designed to assist in the selection of materials for schools.Grade levels are indicated by broad categories; particular suitability is indicated; and, where provided, price and ISBN stated for each item. The reviews fall into fourcategories: highly recommended, recommended, recommended with reservations, andnot recommended by reviewer. The inclusion of this last category was provided for usersof the bibliography to recognize that, although the title has been considered it has beenrejected for particular reasons. In addition, it is important for teacher-librarians to seekout other reviewing media if they wish further critical analysis of a title underconsideration. Another source of reviews is CM : a reviewing journal of Canadianmaterials for young people available from the Canadian Library Association in Ottawa. All persons involved in ordering materials for school library or cla. -nom use shouldhave an opportunity to use In Search of Canadian Materials 1991, which is distributedto all schools in Manitoba.

In Search of Canadian Materials, published in 1978, and its 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982,1983, 1984 and 1986 Supplements, In Search of Canadian Materials 1987, 1988, 1989,and 1990 were sent previously to Manitoba schools. These publications are also availablefor loan from the Library, Manitoba Education and Training. Call numbers are asfollows:015.71 M35 - In Search of Canadian Materials, 1978015.71 M35 s 1979 Supplement015.71 M35 t 1980 Supplement015.71 M35 u - 1981 Supplement015.71 M35 v 1982 Supplement015.71 M35 w - 1983 Supplement015.71 M35 x - 1984 Supplement015.71 M35 y 1986 Supplement015.71 M35 1987 - In Search of Canadian Materials 1987015.71 M35 1988 - In Search of Canadian Materials 1988015.71 M35 1989 - In Search of Canadian Materials 1989015.71 M35 1990 - In Search of Canadian Materials 1990.

Without their dedicated assistance the publicationof the bibliography would not have been possible.

Special thanks are due to Samanthl Rothwell, who assisted in contacting publishersregarding new Canadian materials all to Joan Fergusson, who typed the manuscript.

Lastly, a word of thanks to the publishers who support this project through the provisionof review copies of the books.

BOOKS

GRADE LEVEL - has been indicated by three broad categories:Early Years (K-4); Middle Years (5-8); ,FeniorYears (9-12)

The coding does not indicate the reading level of the material, as some books areincluded at lower levels because they are useful as teachers' reference materials. Mostof the strictly Early Years (K-4) materials are included in the "Picture Book" category, but other books suitable for Early Years readers can be found among the titles noted asEarly Years.

SUBJECT HEADINGS - those used are the ones which correspond most closely to thesubjects taught in school, so that teachers can find materials appropriate to their subjectareas. Occasionally materials cover several areas; so the title index is useful if you areunable to locate something by subject headings.

SELECTION GUIDE - the items included represent what are generally consideredquality materials by educators. However, some items do contain passages which somesegments of the community may find offensive due to the explicitness of the text or tothe religious, social or political views expressed. The nature of the community servedby the school should be kept in mind when selecting materials.

A rating system includes four categories: Highly Recommended; Recommended;Recommended with Reservations; and Not Recommended by Reviewer. Special cautionshould be exercised when selecting materials with the latter two ratings.

The bibliography includes materials which have Canadian content, or are written byCanadians.

PRICES - fluctuate rapidly; and the user should be aware that the stated price may notbe the current one. Some prices were not supplied with review copies of the books. Forease in ordering, the ISBN is included for most of the titles.

Against a backdrop of Victorian Canada,5:towe fought for social issues, includingenfranchisement, female education, temperance andthe abolition of slavery. Some examples of entries are: "Tips to theouthouse", "Sweat off the brow : layering clothingin the outdoors", "Care of your cast iron fry pan","Warming up to Arctic charr" and "Some mythsabout Yukon soil".

Some photos of nudes (from behind) and an explicitentry on safe sex may cause concerns in somecor- munities.

The teacher's resource provides a thorough guide tousing these maps with students. As well, it providesa host of activities to motivate student use of theatlas in the form of sample questions to checkunderstanding of map skills, charts to fill in, andsimulation games to promote research, synthesis, expression and discussion. Manitoba, a title in the Discover Canada series, isan exceptionally fine piece of work. The geologicalhistory of Manitoba, the climate, the settling ofManitoba, the industries, the government, and therole of agriculture are some of the topics explored.Very useful is the addition of a "Facts at at glancechapter" summing up the important points of thisprovince. Important dates, important people, mapsand an index complete the book. Following almostthe same format and equally recommended is NovaScotia, also from the series.

Both historic and current modes of transportation arepresented in this well-developed book. The role ofthe canoe in early transportation, the railway, the St.Lawrence Seaway, pipelines, city transit systems andthe airlines each occupy a chapter. Diagrams, photographs, maps are useful. All in all, a goodanthology, in spite of the weak chapter on theairlines. An index would have been very helpful.

The writer attempts to cover a wide range of historicmaterial, from ancient Orkney to the development ofWestern Canada by the Hudson's Bay Company tothe settlement of Upper Canada. The novel lacksfocus.

There is no character development as the readerattempts to follow the fortunes of various membersof an Orkney family. Each person is used to explaina particular geographical feature or time period.Historical events are sometimes mentioned, butnever explored or explained.
