Part1 describes the Office of Minority Health (OMH), its activities, and the OMHResource Center. Parts 2 and 3 list Public Health Service minority healthliaisons, regional consultants, and state agencies concerned with minorityhealth. Part 4 lists federal health information centers and clearinghouses by57 topical categories. Parts 5 and 6 list organizations concerned with thehealth of African Americans, American Indians and Alaska Natives, AsianAmericans and Pacific Islanders, and Hispanics/Latinos; multiculturalorganizations; and those that distribute health materials in Spanish or Asianlanguages. Part 7 provides three sources for information on minority-basedcolleges and universities. OMH
The Office of Minority Health (OMH) was estab-lished by the U.S. Department of Health and HumanServices (HHS) in 1985. It advises the Secretary andthe Office of Public Health and Science on public healthprogram activities affecting African Americans, AmericanIndians/Alaska Natives, Asian Americans,
Hispanics/Latinos, and Pacific Islanders. Its goal is topromote improved health among these racial and ethnicminority populations.
OMH coordinates HHS' programs to implement the WhiteHouse Initiative on Historically Black Colleges andUniversities and Executive Order 12900 -- EducationalExcellence for Hispanic Americans. It staffs the depart-ment's Working Group on Hispanic Issues.
Major OMH projects include support for the 19-collegeConsortium on Family and Community Violence, grantsfor health demonstration projects organized by minoritycommunity coalitions, and cooperative agreements forhealth projects with major national minority organizations.
OMH works with HHS operating divisions and otherFederal departments to improve collection and analysesof data on the health of racial and ethnic minority popula-tions, and it monitors efforts to achieve Healthy People2000 goals for minority health.
OMH maintains minority health consultants in each of the10 HHS Regional Offices. OMH also maintains the OMHResource Center, which was established to assist in theexchange of information and analysis of minority healthissues.
