Thomas Gouty (Gow-Tee, gow like cow and tee as in a golf tee is how my mother and grandmother Gouty pronounced the name) was born about 1802, in Caroline County, Maryland.(1) Thomas was a son of Prichett Gouty and his wife, Mary Griffith.(2)(Gessie, first 100 years) Pritchett Gouty and Mary Griffith Gouty were the parents of at least six children and perhaps others: 1) Elizabeth Gouty, born December 15, 1796, in Caroline County, Maryland, married Samuel Chezem January 14, 1818, in Circleville, Pickaway County, Ohio.(17) She died May 29, 1859, in Parke County, Indiana. (16A) She appears in the 1850 Indiana Federal Census for Parke County, District 85, as Elizabeth Cheezum, age 53, for about 1797, in Maryland. 2) John Gouty, born in Caroline County, Maryland, March 31, 1800, and died January 24, 1879; buried in Rossville, Illinois, Mann's Chapel Cemetery, Rossville, Vermilion County, Illinois.(xx) He married at least two times. 3) Henry Gouty, born about 1802 in Caroline County, Maryland, and died October 14, 1858, in Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana, buried in ? 4) Thomas Gouty, born about 1802 in Caroline County, Maryland, died June 10, 1863, in Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana. He married three times. He is buried with his third wife at Hicks Cemetery in Perrysville, Indiana. 5) Zachariah Gouty, born about 1815 in Pickaway County, Ohio. 6) Delilah Gouty, born in Pickaway County, Ohio, about 181?, married William Cossey. She died in Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana, about 1840? Perhaps other children, including a Mary (Polly) Ann Gouty. Perhaps a James Gouty born about 1823 in Pickaway County, Ohio. Pritchett Gouty married second Mary Donovan on January 31, 1817, in Pickaway County, Ohio. She was born about 1770 in Delaware. Pickaway County, Ohio, was created in 1810 from portions of Ross, Fairfield, Hocking, and Franklin Counties. Other neighboring counties are Fayette and Madison. Circleville is the county seat. Pickaway is a Native American word meaning "man risen from ashes." Pritchett Gouty and his second wife, Mary Donovan, were buried in the Old Baptist Cemetery, Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana. History of Vermillion County, Indiana, Biographical Sketches: Under David Gouty, Henry Gouty was born in Maryland in 1800. He died October 14, 1858, at the age of 58. He went from Maryland to Ohio where he married Rebecca Whitsell. They had eight children. From Ohio, Mr. Henry Gouty emigrated with his family to Parke County, Indiana, and later removed to Vermillion County, where he lived until his death. He had nine children but all died young and he left no descendants. Vermillion County, Indiana was formed mostly out of Parke County, Indiana. Zechariah Gouty was born about 1817 in Ohio. He brought his father, Prichard Gouty, to Indiana in 1830. John Gouty was born April 1, 1800, in Maryland. He settled

near Rossville, Illinois. He died January 24, 1879. He is buried at Mann's Chapel Cemetery Rossville, Vermilion Co., Illinois. Thomas Gouty apparently had a sister, Elizabeth Gouty, who was born about 1819 in Ohio. Also a sister, Polly Gouty, was born about 1821 in Ohio. And another brother, James Gouty, was born about 1823 in Ohio. According to the Gessie, Indiana, The First One Hundred Years 1872 - 1972, "The Gouty family came from France (name originally Goutier) to Dorcester County, Maryland, in 1670. Prichard Gouty was born July 4, 1766 and died May 12, 1837. He is buried in a cemetery near the Squire Shute farm. Pritchard's three sons, Henry, Thomas, and Zechariah came to Indiana in 1820. Henry to Parke County and Thomas to Vermillion County. Zechariah brought their father here in 1830. There was a fourth brother John but he settled near Rossville, Illinois. Henry had 9 children but all died young and he left no descendants. Zechariah moved to Iowa. Thomas Gouty was married 3 times and had children by all three. His first wife was Nancy Carr, his second wife was Elizabeth Stutler and his 3rd wife was Catherine Hoobler. Everyone called her Aunt Katie. She was a charter member of the Gessie United Brethren Church. Thomas was the great grandfather of Dale Gouty. Elias Gouty (son of Thomas) was Dale's grandfather. Lewis was Dale's father. Dale lives in the homeplace."(S7) Dale Gouty was born October 4, 1901, in Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana. He died December 11, 1981, in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois. He married Merle Volkel on January 8, 1924. She was born July 6, 1902, and she died November 1, 1984. They are buried in Hopewell Cemetery, Vermillion County, Indiana. In History of Vermillion County, Indiana, Biographical Sketches we find the following: "Thomas Gouty settled in Vermillion County in 1833 or earlier. He died June 10, 1863, aged sixty-one years. Elias, his son, was born here in 1833. Henry Gouty may have settled in this township a year or two later, he died in 1864, and his wife, Rebecca, died in 1874, at the age of seventy-five years." Original land owners in Vermilion County, Indiana, included Henry Gouty in 1829 in Highland Township, John Gouty in 1826 in Highland Township, and Thomas Gouty in 1829 in Highland Township.(XV) Vermillion County, Indiana, Land and Marriage Records, compiled by Lowell M. Thomas Gouty married first Nancy Kerr on October 14, 1830, in Vermillion County, Indiana.(7) They were married by Thomas Chenoweth, Justice of the Peace.(page 41) Nancy Kerr was born about 1809 in Franklin County, Ohio. Her father was Samuel Kerr and her mother was Nancy Gwynne.(CXV) Two Chenoweth families owned land next to Thomas Gouty according to the map of the first land owners of Highland Township. Orson Kerr was a brother of Nancy Kerr. Orson owned land adjacent to land owned by Thomas Gouty in Vermillion County, Indiana.(ET) Both farms appear on the map entitled, "First Land Owners of Highland Township".(hfhd) Samuel Kerr and Nancy Gwynne were the parents of the following children:(to do) 1. A Moses Carr appears in the census records and perhaps was born before 1805 and was older than 18 years and not under the guardians appointed for the above children. The children of Thomas Gouty and Nancy Carr were: i. Clarissa Gouty, born July 5, 1832 in Highland, Vermillion, Indiana, and died April 7, 1875, in Deerfield, Vernon, Missouri. She married John Sampson Chezem (1830-1879) and had a child named Sarah Ellen Chezem, 1854-1931). Undoubtedly Clarissa Gouty was named after the only sister of her mother. Clarissa Kerr was born September 27, 1813, and that she died February 11, 1880. She married Isaac Demorest, his second wife, on October 24, 1833, probably in Franklin County, Ohio.(per John H. Bell, born April 28, 1925, of Lafayette, LA 70501) ii. Elias B. Gouty, born September 11, 1833, in Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana, and died April 18, 1915, in Vermillion County, Indiana(10)

There should be a death certificate in Vermillion County, Indiana, for Elias B. Gouty. iii. Mary Gouty, born about 1836 in Indiana and died April 4, 1857(11) She married William O. Hoobler on October 12, 1853, in Vermilion County, Illinois. It was not uncommon for people around the Gessie, Indiana, area of Vermillion County, Indiana, to marry in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois. He was a son of John Hoobler and Rebecca Fetterhoff. He was born March 25, 1830, in Fountain County, Indiana. Both are buried at Phillips Cemetery, Manville, Livingston County, Illinois. iv. Eleanor Gouty, born about 1838 in Indiana(12) v. John Russell Gouty, born about 1840 in Indiana and died in 1907(13) He married Ruhama Davis (Dennis) in 1859 in Gessie, Vermillion County, Indiana. She was born October 3, 1840, and she died February 25, 1882. Both are buried in Hopewell Cemetery, Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana. Elias B. Gouty married Elizabeth Shute on September 1, 1853, in Indiana.(7) Elizabeth Shute was the daughter of Richard Shute and Hannah McCartney who were married September 1, 1814, in Ohio.(8) The Peoples Guide for Vermillion County, Indiana, 1874 lists Elias Gouty as a farmer born in Vermillion County in 1833 and located 1 mile northeast of Gessie. The last name was misspelled as Grouty in the listing.(9) Elias and Elizabeth Gouty were the parents of eight children: Thomas, William, Daniel, Russell, Lewis, Joseph P., Elizabeth, and Elias Gouty Junior. Elizabeth (Shute) Gouty died March 30, 1915, and was buried at the Hicks Cemetery at Perrysville, Indiana.(10) Elias B. Gouty died April 18, 1915, age 81, and was buried in the Hicks Cemetery at Perrysville, Indiana, with his wife.(11) Buried with Elias and Elizabeth Gouty at the Hicks Cemetery is a son, Russell Gouty, who was born November 17, 1857, and died September 27, 1858.(12) Elias Gouty appears in a number of U. S. Census records for Vermillion County, Indiana. The 1850 Federal Census for Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township, page 63, lists the Thomas Gouty household. Thomas Gouty is listed as age 44, male, farmer, born in Maryland, real estate value owned = $3,000. Catherine Gouty is listed age 25, female, wife, born in Ohio. Elias is listed as age 17, male, born in Indiana, and attended school in year.(13) It is obvious from this census record that Catherine Gouty was too young to be the mother of Elias B. Gouty. Nancy (Kerr) Gouty, first wife of Thomas Gouty, apparently died sometime before May 31, 1840, the date when Thomas Gouty married his second wife, Elizabeth Stutler, in Vermillion County, Indiana.(14) According to the Gessie Centennial, 1872 - 1972, "William Stutler came from Ohio in 1830 and settled in Highland Township west of Gessie. He died in 1831 leaving six children. Joseph S. a son was two years old when they came to Vermillion County, with his parents."(15) According to a listing of First Landowners of Highland Township, William Stutler first owned land there in 1829. History of Vermillion County, Indiana, Biographical Sketches: Lists James C. Stutler who was a son of Joseph S. Stutler and a grandson of William Stutler. William settled in Highland Township in 1830, where he died one year later. Joseph S. Stutler was born in Ohio in 1820. The second wife of Thomas Gouty was related to this Stutler family.(16) J. S. Stutler, farmer, 2 miles north of Gessie, born in Ohio in 1820, settled in Vermillion County, 1829. The children of Thomas Gouty and Elizabeth Stutler were:

vi. William Gouty, born about 1844(17) He married Minerva Cossey on August 8, 1863, in Vermillion County, Indiana.. She was a daughter of Peter Cossey and Sarah Shute. She was born October 7, 1844, and she died July 19, 1917. Both are buried at Hopewell Cemetery, Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana. vii. Amos B. Gouty, born about 1845 in Danville Township, Vermilion County, Illinois(18) He married Tryphosa Narcissus Draper on February 25, 1866, in Vermillion County, Illinois. Elizabeth Stutler, the second wife of Thomas Gouty, apparently died sometime before June 28, 1849, when Thomas married his third wife, Catherine Hoobler.(19) They were married in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois.(20) She had married a William Villars in 1845, in Vermillion County, Indiana. She was a daughter of John Hoobler and Rebecca Fetterhoff. John Hoobler was a minister of the U. B. Church. He was born in Pennsylvania, in 1801, and settled in Vermillion County, 1832.(21) According to a listing of First Landowners of Highland Township, John Hoobler first owned land there in 1831.(22) Catherine Hoobler was born November 6, 1825, in Montgomery County, Ohio.(23) The children of Thomas Gouty and Catherine Hoobler were: viii. David Henry Gouty, born March 16, 1850, in Vermillion County, Indiana, and died March 25, 1888(24) He married Axa M. Chapman on September 12, 1872, in Livingston County, Illinois. She was a daughter of Sonum Chapman and Elmina (Chapman). She was born August 12, 1851, in Trumbull County, Ohio, and she died November 9, 1922. Both are buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois. ix. Frederick Smith Gouty, born January 18, 1853, in Vermillion County, Indiana, and died March 27, 1913, in Gessie, Vermillion County, Indiana(25) He married Sariah I. Prather on August 15, 1872, in Vermilion County, Illinois. She was the daughter of Jonathan Prather and Nancy Martin. She was born November 16, 1855, in Vermillion County, Indiana, and she died August 23, 1882, in Vermillion County, Indiana. Both are buried at Hopewell Cemetery, Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana. x. Sarah R. Gouty, born March 6, 1856 in Vermillion County, Indiana, and died January 23, 1861. Sarah R. The following court cases, due to its significance in identifying the children of Thomas Gouty and his three wives is included below in its entirety. Rebecca Gouty versus Elias Gouty et al Book 20, page 261 Vermillion County Court In Partition On the 2nd day of the August Term 1865 of the Vermillion Circuit Court. The commissioners appointed by said court to make partition of the lands of which Thomas Gouty died seized of. Situated in the County of Vermillion and State of Indiana among the heirs of said deceased made the following report which was received approved and confirmed to wit - - The undersigned commissioners appointed by an order of said Court at its February Term 1865 & acting under an order on commission issued by the clerk of this court and being severally first duly sworn according law and having examined said lands in the petition mentioned make the following report of partition among the parties plaintiffs & defendants to wit. Just curious, but I’ve been meaning to ask you how your family pronounces thissurname: GOO-TEE or GOW-TEE?

This could have been a very complicated genealogy, with three wives and fourteen (!)children, but the lengthy court documents distributing Thomas’ land following his deathhelps sort out “who’s who” and “who belongs to whom.”

First paragraph, footnote #1: The biography of the Gouty family is chock-full ofinformation. Do you know the author? If so, he/she should be noted. When was thebook written? Was it contemporary with any of the events/names in the narrative? Inthe fifth sentence of the footnote, you need an comma between 1820 and Henry, forclarity. About halfway through this footnote, you have “3rd wife.” Since you wrote outthe numbers of the first two wives, you should write out “third wife” here as well, forconsistency. There is a blank between “United” and “Church.” Was this a computerglitch or because you are uncertain of the denomination? Further down in the firstparagraph, in the sentence beginning with “Dale lives in the homeplace” there is a semi-colon, then a quotation mark – is this quotation mark in the correct place?

Fourth paragraph: Nice proof of Thomas’ marriage to Nancy Carr. In fact, you haveexcellent proofs of all of Thomas’ marriages. That is the advantage of the Midwest,over the “wilds” of Appalachia – records are so much better, due to urban settlement,socio-economic levels, fewer Civil War courthouse burnings, etc. (This is why mypaternal side is so well-documented and my maternal mountain renegades are my“brick walls!” If my female ancestors had married the fathers of their children, it would sovery helpful in my research!)

In your discussion of Thomas’ second wife Elizabeth Stutler, you mention the “U. B.Church.” Is that “United Brethren?” You might want to spell it out the first time you useit.

Nice census reports. The list of Thomas’ children is staggering! Fourteen children in 30years! Whew. Thanks to census reports and other good documents, you have sorted

out which children belong to which mother very well. Thomas’s first wife may well havedied of childbirth complications, since it appears that her last child Russell was an infantwhen Thomas remarried. Interestingly, Thomas and second wife Elizabeth weremarried almost four years before the birth of William. Given the spacing of his childrenof the three marriages, they may well have lost their first child before William was born.

The court papers for partition of Thomas’ estate are so interesting. What a tangled web,to try to divide his estate fairly. I was curious as to the value of Elias’ $1290. Accordingto a website on the value of a dollar in various years, Elias’ $1290 in 1865 would beworth more than $14,000 today.

Footnote 9: You are correct that Elias could not possibly be the son of Thomas’ secondwife. The 1840 census supports this, as there is only one male child of the right age;this must be Elias.

CONCLUSIONS: The main source for Thomas Gouty’s parentage is the GessieIndiana history book. Who wrote it and what is the source? It appears to contain a lotof substantial information, but who provided it? Ancestry.com’s World Family Treecannot be used as a source by itself. The reason I am cautious about the GessieIndiana book is because two such books list my great-great grandfather as a veteran ofboth the Blackhawk Indian Wars and the Civil War and I have never been able to provehim as a veteran of either war. The accuracy of this source depends on who wrote theGouty family history for it and what their sources were. Therefore, footnotes 1-6regarding Thomas’ parentage need more documentation and study as to the sources.
