What is postmodernism?

◦Postmodernism first occurred in the 1870’s by John Watkins as a way to move on from French influence from people’s work. Postmodernism has been used to influence art, architecture, music and literature.

◦There has also been use of modernist ideas in the 20th century art and culture.

Further research◦ Postmodern ideas is that anything can be art if it serves to reach an audience -

therefore one piece of work is not of any greater value than another.

◦ Postmodernism is used in the media as it began the introduction of insecurities upon physical appearances and personal identities. Therefore, leading to inspiring changes to identities and reinventing yourself.

◦ For example: Lady Gaga

Glossary◦Reinvent – To change something so that it appears completely brand new.

◦Surrealism - A 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature which sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images.

◦Self reflexive - Containing a reflection or image of itself

◦ Intertextuality – One media text referring to another.

◦Homage – Imitation from a respectful standpoint

◦Parody – Mocking something in an original way

◦Pastiche - An artistic style that imitates another work or style. This is self-conscious imitation.

◦Bricolage – Mixing up using different genres and styles.
