Dave Foster has been a head high school football coach for 19 years . He has coached his fair share of talented quar-terbacks but he was not too shy to admit that senior quarterback Caden Walters may just well be the best signal caller he has had as a coach . Walters highlights the eight returning starters on the offensive side of the ball for the Red Demons in 2015 . As a junior last season, Walters passed for 2,288 yards and 18 touchdowns . Along with his numbers through the air, the junior quarterback scored 12 more touchdowns on the ground . “The difference is this year he is run-ning the show,” Foster said . “Realistically he’s making a lot of decisions on the field . We’re putting a lot in his hands because we know he can handle that being in his

hands . He’s the best quarterback i’ve ever coached .” Another quarterback who came to Foster’s mind when talking about the senior was Jared Helfrich who led the Red Demons to an 11-1 season and received first team all state honors in 2010 . Walters will have a very experienced offensie surrounding him this season, particularly at the skill positions . Five players who caught at least 16 passes for 300 or more yards last season return in 2015 . The biggest question mark pertain-ing to the offense is the offensive line . While the offense returns what Foster said might be the best set of skill position players in the state, there are a few more question marks on the defensive side of the ball for the Red Demons . “Defensively we graduated a little bit more but we’re really changing our philosophy defensively to a much more

aggressive package based on the speed that we’ll put on the field,” Foster said . That defensive speed will come from players who will also start on the offensive side of the ball . it will be tough but senior receiver Dayton McGroarty, who could also have his number called to play safety, said the guys are up for the challenge . “you have to stop people to win games,” McGroarty said . “i think we’ve all accepted that we might be a little more tired on offense but it’s going to help the team having guys play both ways . Seniors noah Williams and Robby Carter are the leading returning tacklers from 2014 . Williams finished second on the team last season with 76 total tackles . “last year we were kind of rough some games,” Carter said about last year’s defense . “We gave up a lot of points and a lot of yards . We have new defensive fronts and stuff like that . We’re going to

be putting some hits on people this year .” There is no question that the Red De-mons’ 2015 football roster is flooded with talent but when asked how that talent will translate into wins, Foster’s answer was simple . “We have to play as a team,” Foster said . “We have to care about each other and not care about stats and really care about the Red Demon nation .”

A new chapter will begin this season for the Dodge City High School soccer team . Despite it being a new chapter, the story will include some familiar characters . DCHS graduate Saul Hernandez is the new head coach of the Red Demons and returns to his hometown follow-ing coaching stints in liberal and Hays . Hernandez said everything has been a little overwhelming with the suddenness of the move but he is glad to be back home coaching at his alma mater . Hernandez has been learning a lot about his team since practices started and has been pleased with the focus of his new squad since day one . “The practices have been high in-tensity,” Hernandez said . “The boys have been giving it their all . it was hard cutting it down to 22 for varsity . i believe there are still 10 guys right at their heels who could be on varsity . We’re going to have depth this season .” Senior midfielder leonel lopez, a returning three-year letter winner, echoed his new coach about just how intense try-outs were . lopez said in his four years of going through Red Demon soccer tryouts, this season’s was by far the toughest . “you had to give everything you had, you couldn’t hold back anything,” lopez said . “There are kids on JV that are fight-ing . They are doing everything they can

to get on varsity and they are just waiting for someone from varsity to mess up . like (Hernandez) said, it was hard from (the coaches) and it was hard for us .” Hernandez said one of the Red Demons greatest attributes going into the season is their technique which has allowed the new coaching staff to get right into the tactics of how they want to play . lopez along with junior Antonia De la Torre headline the returners for the Red Demons . lopez has been pleased with the effort that everyone has been showing and believes the strong chemistry of the team will help the Red Demons in 2015 .

The Dodge City High School is bigger this season than head coach Jim Mapel is used to . 16 girls will make up this seasons girls golf team which is nearly double the size of usual according to Mapel . Returning for the Red Demons include seniors logan Gleason and Katie Rostet-ter along with the junior class of Makena Konrade, Ali phelps and emily Stephenson . “We have some promising younger players,” Mapel said . “We finished 3rd in the conference last year and 5th at the

regional . our goal this year is to qualify the entire team for the state tournament .

The Dodge City High School girl’s cross country team finished seventh as a team at the 6A state meet last season . A majority of that squad will be back in 2015, in what could shape up to be a strong season for the Red Demons . “The attitude so far this year has been absolutely wonderful and leadership on the team has been good,” girls head coach Brian lenz said . “We’ve got a long ways to go . We’re not near in the shape

that we’ll need to be at the end of the year but the way we’ve had our first week go, everything is going great .” Seven runners who ran at state re-turn in 2015 . Sophomores Amelia Richter and Sydney Foster along with senior Jas-mine Duarte headline the seven returners from last season . on the boys side of the junior Marcelo Cruz will lead the way after finishing 14th at state last year . There are five varsity returners in all for the Red Demon boy’s cross country team .

“During the summer we had great conditioning,” boy’s head coach Buc Bol-mer said . “We had quite a few kids show

up to summer conditioning . everybody’s been working hard and getting ready to have a great season .”

Dodge City High School volleyball head coach Krystle Gaswick admitted that last season the Red Demons should have been better than they were . DCHS had tal-ent but it also served as a rebuilding year . The Red Demons have five returning starters and six returning letter-winners from 2014 with eight seniors overall . last year’s 14-21 record encouraged those returners to get into the gym and work to get better . “We had more experience and we should’ve done better than we did last year but with this crop of seniors, it was a building year for them and they are really fired up,” Gaswick said . “They have some passion . They have a chip on their shoulder from how we finished last year so they are looking for a really strong way to finish out their high school careers .” Senior hitter Bailey Shelor and senior defensive specialists lauren esquibel and Alex Stecklein headline the returning

starters for the Red Demons . other key returners include senior middle blocker Brianna Bradshaw, senior setter Jessica Harshberger and junior middle blocker Tia Bradshaw . “We have been doing a lot of off the court leadership training with those sen-iors,” Gaswick said . “All of them know that if they are within the boundaries of the court, they’re expected to be a leader .”

This year’s 27-player roster is larger than usual for the season Dodge City High School girl’s tennis team . This year head coach David Snodgrass decided to keep more girls, which has added to the excite-ment heading into the 2015 season . “i’m really excited about this year,” Snodgrass said . “We have six girls com-ing back that had varsity experience that competed last year . We have a total of six seniors as well . our junior class is our larg-est class with around 15 .” Sophomore leah Stein returns with the most singles experience for the Red Demons . Stein was the most consistent player for DCHS last year and was just one match away from qualifying for state . Senior Suzy Arkell and junior Hannah

Sowers were also one match away from qualifying for state last year . Snodgrass called the doubles team of Arkell the most dominant doubles team that the Red Demons had in 2014 . However, Snodgrass may shuffle the six varsity spots depend-ing on doubles pairings .

learning curve is very small compared to where it was last year or the year before .” one thing that Romanello is trying to avoid is what happened to the Conqs last season after getting off to a 5-1-1 start, DCCC lost five of the last nine games of the season . “The difference between this year and

last year is we’re far more intelligent than we were a year ago and we’re far more technical,” Romanello said . “on that side of things, i think we can iron out some small things, make some corrections and keep-ing them from going into a major slump that haunted the women’s team here in the past .”

The Dodge City Community College men’s soccer team started their season off with a 1-1 tie on Wednesday against Kansas Wesleyan . Freshman forward pedro ortiz scored for the Conquistadors . “We were able to play with far more intensity and pace than we were able to last year,” head coach Tim Romanello said . “last year it strictly came down to our experience . This year we are far more intense .” The goal for ortiz was a positive sign for the Conqs, as they will be looking to replace the two leading scorers from last year . in 2014, the Conqs went 11-5-2 which included a 5-2-2 conference record . “pedro ortiz has been fantastic,” Ro-manello said . “if he can stay switched on at training and in games he could be a really good player for us . He is someone who can score double-digit goals here on the year .” Sophomore forward Shemuel Wilson and sophomore midfield Shawn Watson return as the Conqs leading scorers from the previous season . Wilson was third on the team last season with four goals and Watson was right behind him with three . Freshman goalkeeper Sebastian Bolivar will man the net for the Conqs this season after losing Alex Rodela from last season . Along with the freshmen, sophomore

transfer Duran lee is someone that Ro-manello is excited about . lee is a 6-foot-2 midfielder from ontario . “(lee) has been absolutely brilliant,” Romanello said . “it’s just a matter of get him a little bit more involved and a little more controlled on the defensive side . He’s going to be a player that some seri-ous division one schools will be looking at .”

Despite getting on the board first, the Dodge City Community College women’s soccer team fell to Kansas Wesleyan 2-1 on Wednesday in the season opener . “We just need to be a little more organized now through our midfield,” head coach Tim Romanello said . “The attack seems to be okay, the defense seems to be okay, at the moment our goalkeeping is strong .” Freshman defender Rachel Van Bur-skirk suffered a sprained ankle in training and was only able to play 57 minutes on Wednesday . Burskirk will be a key piece to the puzzle for the Conqs young team this season . 14 of the 19 players on the DCCC roster are freshmen . “The inexperience is probably going to cost us a couple games,” Romanello said . “We’re going to have to take that team and teach them how to win but i think the

The Dodge City Community College volleyball team has gotten off to a slow start in 2015 following a 3-0 loss to Cloud County on Wednesday . The Conquistadors won their first match of the season against Trinidad State but have struggled since . Head coach Ashley nehls acknowl-edged that she had a young team coming into the season and that it would take time to develop chemistry which was the top priority in the preseason . “We’re only bringing back four players from last year and some of those players that we are bringing back as sophomores are transfers,” nehls said prior to the scrimmage at Butler . “We’re a really young team and they are still getting to know each other .” Before the season, nehls emphasized that she wanted her players to be the hardest working group and her hope was that other teams would admire the way the Conqs go about their business . leading the way for the Conqs so far this season has been freshman hitter Sada Smith . in the first match of the year, Smith had 16 kills against Trinidad State . Smith has averaged eight kills in the last three matches .

Dodge City Community College head coach Gary Thomas named fresh-man Tommy lazzaro the Conquistadors starting quarterback for 2015 . lazzaro will have one of the best set of skill position players in the country around with returning sophomores Jeff George and Christian Booker . Freshman wide receiver Justin Mcinnis adds another big target for lazarro . “it gives me the confidence because i know that i have the guys around me that will make a play for me,” laz-zaro said . “i can throw a bad ball and i know Jeff (George) is going to go over someone and go get it, i know (Mcinnis) is going to go get it . (Booker), Marquice (Flowers), they are all playmakers .” Sophomore running back Mark Thompson should also help take some of the pressure off of the young quar-terback this season . Thompson ran for 460 yards and eight touchdowns last season . According to Rivals .com, Thompson is the top-rated junior college running back in the country . The 6-foot-2, 230-pound running back has committed to play at Florida next year . Despite having already committed to join the Gators in 2016, Thompson said his focus is still with the Conqs . “it takes a lot of stress off of your shoulders first of all because every-one, when you go to junior college, the first idea is getting to that next level,” Thompson said . “So being able to not have to worry about that and just go out there and just have fun and play my game is something i’m looking forward to .” Sophomore cornerback elijah Battle summed up the 2014 season for the Conqs when he said that the offense was able to put points on the board but the defense struggled to get stops . DCCC went 3-8 last season . in three of the eight losses, DCCC scored 34 or more points . prior to the Conqs first game of the season against ellsworth, Thomas emphasized just how important the defense is going to be this season . “We’ve got to play great on de-fense,” Thomas said . “From my stand-point we’ve always been very good on offense but our defense really sets the tone for our football team and hopefully

they can do that on Thursday .” The key to the Conqs 4-3 defense starts up front with, what Thomas calls, the behemoths . Sophomores oddie Granger and Dion Dawson will be in charge of plugging up the middle . Thomas says the pair of 325-pound interior defensive linemen are as good as anyone they will face all season . The Conqs should be able to play much faster on defense according to Thomas . Battle, along with fellow so-phomore cornerback Desmond Hend-erson are returning starters from last

season . While DCCC will have to rely on younger players at the linebacker spot, Thomas is comfortable with the unit, saying they all bring the element of speed to the defense . “The problem with our defense is that we’re a gap control defense so when we play it correctly, it’s very dif-ficult to gain an inch on our defense,” Thomas said . “When we do something wrong it’s a touchdown and that’s where last year we were a combination of not as athletic as we’ve been in the past and we made some dumb mistakes at times

that put us in some bad positions .” other key returners for the Conqs include sophomore offensive linemen Cole Cruz and Chris Gayner along with sophomore kicker Dillon Burkhard . DCCC will play their first two games of the season on the road before returning home on September 12 against inde-pendence .
