June Bjerke, 90, a residentof Prairie Meadows SeniorLiving, was born in Hibbing,Minnesota in 1922. AdolfHitler’s destructive path stilllaid heavy on the minds of theAmerican people. June (Kaul)Bjerke did not want to tellanyone she was of Germandescent.
June also had a brother twoyears younger who was inPatton’s 5th Army. He helpedto liberate the concentrationcamp at Auschwitz. June saidit really made him feel good, being of German descent tohelp liberate the Jews.
June said her brother’smilitary commitment hadsomething to do with hergraduating from the AnchorHospital School of Nursing inSt. Paul to become an RN andjoining the Army. Being ofGerman descent she perhapshad a little something toprove in being an Americancitizen. “Four of us who grad-uated enlisted as Army nurs-
es,” said June.In 1944 she had basic train-
ing in Colorado Springs, which she said was similar to what the guys did, only they did nothave to shoot a gun. From there they were transferred to Fort Leonard Wood, a Missouri hos-pital. From there she traveled to Rhode Island and shipped out to England on a boat she com-pared to the Queen Mary.
By land she traveled to the southern tip of England and took a boat to France, landing aweek after D-day. “We could smell the war. It was a little scary,” said June.
The unit set up in a tent hospital at Carentan, France. This was right after the famous Battleof the Bulge. They took care of Americans and POWs. One of June’s most vivid memorieswas caring for a Nazi soldier. “That was the only time I ever felt threatened and always hada soldier nearby,” said June. “I could tell he hated me...Americans.”
From there the unit traveled to Frankfurt, Germany where they worked in a Luftwaffe hos-pital that was in American hands. “That was deluxe. We even had showers,” said June. It goesto show during World War II the Germans took good care of their wounded pilots.
When June’s unit arrived the group they where relieving was ready for a break. They treat-ed the soldiers injured in the Battle of the Bulge. Since the medical technology was consid-erably less sophisticated the demands on nurses was at times physically exhausting. As June
pointed out though, “We were young and had a lot of energy.”June’s unit served a short time in Heidelberg, Germany. She later talked to a friend who had
been in nurses training with her and took care of General Patton until the day he died. Themovie “Patton” decried Patton as this tough guy, hard on his soldiers. June’s friend saw anoth-er side. “They called him ‘Old Blood and Guts, but she said he was one of the nicest guys shemet over there.”
In France the weather was cold and they slept six nurses to a tent that had a pot belly stove.“They took good care of the nurses and I felt good about what I was doing,” said June.Working around injured soldiers and death was all part of the job. As June said, “We did whatwe had to do.”
What she enjoyed most was the comradery of the nurses she worked with when the unitmoved from one location to the next. “There were two of us from Minnesota, two from Illinoisand two from Missouri.”
The unit’s final stop on the tour was Frankfurt. June served from 1944-46 and attained therank of 1st Lieutenant, which she said was one step higher than when she started.
June was married after serving. Her husband then died. She met Harvey whose spouse hadalso died. Her first husband was acousin to Harvey’s first wife.Harvey and June were married 47years before Harvey died earlierthis year.
June said a highlight for herwas to go on one of the southeastMinnesota Honor Flights. She saidHarvey never wanted to go as hewas always a little embarrassedfrom serving in the Air Force inBermuda. “I don’t think he felt hedeserved to go,” said June.
While June felt good aboutwhat she was doing as a nurse, hermother did not feel that way. “Shethought I should stay home andmake drapes, sew and cook,” saidJune. “She gave all my Army gearaway, including my uniform.”What June Bjerke still has thoughare the memories of a girl ofGerman descent serving her coun-try well.
World War II Army nurse June Bjerke did not want anyone to know she was German
June Bjerke, 90, still has goodmemories of serving as an RN inFrance and Germany duringWorld War II.
June (Kaul) Bjerke served in the U.S. Army from 1944-46 as an RN.

World War I, known at the time as "The Great War",officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signedJune 28, 1919 outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when anarmistice between the Allied nations and Germany wentinto effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the month. For that reason, November 11, 1918 is generally regard-ed as the end of "the war to end all wars."
In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimedNovember 11 as the first commemoration of ArmisticeDay. The original concept for the celebration was for aday observed with parades and public meetings and abrief suspension of business beginning at 11 a.m.
An act was approved in 1938 that made the 11th ofNovember in each year a legal holiday, a day to be ded-icated to the cause of world peace and to be known as"Armistice Day." Armistice Day was primarily a day setaside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, afterWorld War II had required the greatest mobilization ofsoldiers in the nation's history and after American forcesfought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress voted tostrike out the word “Armistice" and insert in its place theword "Veterans." June 1, 1954, November 11 became aday to honor American veterans of all wars.
The Uniform Holiday Bill was signed June 28, 1968and was intended to ensure three-day weekends forFederal employees by celebrating four national holidayson Mondays; Washington's birthday, Memorial Day,Columbus Day and Veterans Day. It was thought thatthese extended weekends would encourage travel, recreational and cultural activities and stimulate greaterindustrial and commercial production. Many states did
not agree with the decision and continued to cele-brate the holidays on their original dates.
The first Veterans Day under the new law wasobserved with much confusion on October 25,1971. It was apparent that the commemoration ofthis day was a matter of historic and patriotic sig-nificance to a great number of citizens, and so onSeptember 20, 1975 President Gerald R. Fordsigned a public law that returned Veterans Day to itsoriginal date of November 11, beginning in 1978.The American people and all veterans servicesoverwhelmingly approved returning to the originaldate.
Veterans Day continues to be observedNovember 11, regardless of what day of the weekon which it falls. The restoration of the observanceof Veterans Day to November 11 preserves the his-torical significance of the date and helps focus attentionon the important purpose of the day: A celebration tohonor America's veterans for their patriotism, love ofcountry and willingness to serve and sacrifice for thecommon good.
For Veterans Day in many places the flag is hung athalf mast. A period of silence for two minutes is held at11 a.m. and many schools choose to mark the occasionwith special assemblies. Federal government offices willbe closed, including county and city offices and manybanks as well.
While Memorial Day serves primarily to honor thoseveterans who have died in our nation's service, VeteransDay serves to recognize the living veterans who haveserved and the members of the military services who are
serving our country at thistime.
Kasson American Legioncolor guard members DaveHansen (right) and BlairKleeberger took part in aVeterans Day ceremony lastyear at the K-M Elementary. Itis important for youth toknow the significance ofVeterans Day.
Sunday, November11 there will be aVeterans Day com-memoration to honorCivil War veterans atthe site of the Civil WarMemorial in Wasioja. The ceremony willbegin at 2 p.m.Speaking at last year'sceremony was DonSmith, announcingthere would be anotherWasioja Civil War Daysin June of 2013.
The advertisers in the Dodge County Independent Business Directorywould like to thank all veterans who have served our country andthose members of the military services who are currently serving!

Strength Training Tips For Seniors
Dear Savvy Senior,Can lifting weights help with age-related health prob-
lems? At age 70, I have diabetes, arthritis and osteo-porosis and recently read that strength training couldimprove my conditions. What can you tell me?
Looking for Help Dear LookingA growing body of research shows that strength training
exercises can have a profound impact on a person’s healthas they age – and you’re never too old to start.
Regular strength training, done at least two nonconsec-utive days a week, helps you build muscle strength, increases your bone density and improves your balance, coordination and stamina. It can also help reduce the signsand symptoms of many chronic conditions like arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, back pain, depression andobesity. And some studies even show that it helps improvecognitive function too.
Safety FirstFor the most part, strength training exercises – especial-
ly if you start conservatively and progress slowly – are safefor most seniors, even those with serious health conditions. But, if you have health concerns or if you are currentlyinactive, you should talk to your doctor about what may beappropriate for you. A good self-help resource to help youfind an appropriate, safe exercise program is the “Exerciseand Screening for You” tool at easyforyou.info.
Getting StartedIf you’ve never done strength training exercises before,
you may want to work with a personal trainer for a few ses-sions to help you develop a safe and effective routine youcan continue on your own. They cost anywhere from $20 to$100 per hour. To find one, ask your health care provider orcontact a good health club or fitness facility in your area. You can also search for one online at reputable sites likeacefitness.org or ideafit.com.
If personal training isn’t an option, there are lots of greatsenior strength training videos you can purchase to guideyou through a wide variety of exercises that you can do athome. Collage Video (collagevideo.com, 800-819-7111)sells dozens of age and fitness appropriate DVD’s at pricesusually ranging between $10 and $20.
Also see go4life.nia.nih.gov, a resource created by theNational Institute on Aging that offers a free exercise DVDand guide that provides illustrated examples of exercisesyou can do at home to strengthen your body. You canorder your free copies online or by calling 800-222-2225.
Senior ClassesIf you don’t like exercising alone or need some motiva-
tion consider joining a gym, or call your local senior centerto see if they offer any strength training exercise classes. You should also check out SilverSneakers(silversneakers.com, 888-423-4632) or Silver&Fit (silverand-fit.com, 877-427-4788). These are fitness programs offeredin thousands of fitness centers, gyms and YMCAs through-out the U.S. that offer special classes designed for olderadults. These programs are available only to seniors thathave certain Medicare supplemental policies or MedicareAdvantage plans.
EquipmentIf you work out at home you’ll probably need to invest in
some equipment. While some strength training can be doneusing your own body weight (like push-ups, sit-ups and legsquats), hand weights, ankle weights, medicine balls, resis-tance bands or rubber tubing are all great tools for strengthtraining. You can find all these products at sporting goodsstores, or online at amazon.com for around $10 or less.Cans of soup, water bottles or plastic milk containers filledwith water or sand could also be used (like small handweights) for resistance.
Another great strength training tool you should knowabout is the Resistance Chair (it costs $280). This is an all-in-one home fitness system that helps senior’s maintainand improve their strength from a safe seated position withminimal risk of injury. To learn more see vqactioncare.comor call 800-585-4920.
