WORKING TOGETHER COLIN E DOE, MANAGING DIRECTOR

Welcome to the second edition of the special Construction Doe News, the first having been launched a year ago. The importance of this part of our business just continues to grow.

Last year, I spoke of two forthcoming construction projects. One was the new workshop and rebuild at our Framlingham branch. This represented a £700,000 investment for the Ernest Doe group of companies and interestingly only one of our customers followed up my request for contractors to tender for the work. My article must have been too long to maintain readers’ interest: note to self to keep it short in future! However, in my opinion

it is always good to try and reciprocate business, so I am delighted the contract for the work was placed with our Colchester-based customer, Cadman Construction Ltd.

I believe we are a good company that have been selling construction equipment for many decades. We trade with integrity, always endeavouring to provide the best service and products, which is why we back everything up with our promise “Where you can buy with confidence”. The same is true of our latest venture, Ernest Doe’s online shop. Have a look at www.ernestdoeshop.com. It is in the early stages of its development and all suggestions are very welcome

- please email any comments and ideas to [email protected].

I would like to thank all our

customers for their business during 2015 and hope to see many of you at the 2016 Doe Show on 2nd, 3rd and 4th February.

CONSTRUCTION OVERVIEWGRAHAM PARKER, SALES DIRECTOR

It’s a regular pastime for me to trawl the internet or to scan the construction news to glean where the construction industry is heading and what the short, medium and long term prognosis really is. Since the end of the recession (for us this was early 2010) we have, as a company, seen sales of construction machinery boom by some 200%. However, we must not become complacent about the future and must continue to plan accordingly either for an up or, indeed, a downturn.

I recently read a report from the House of Commons Library that the construction industry in 2015 was worth over £103 billion to the UK economy and generated some 2.1m jobs; put another way 6.2% of the total UK economy is generated in some way or another across the construction industry - it’s now big business and a very long way from the dark days we saw in 2008 and 2009.

The report also pointed out that 74% of our industry is from work generated in the private sector with, of course, house building being the key player. However, interestingly, the development of commercial property is very much on the rise and the report predicted that in future years commercial property could overtake housing to take the number one spot.

The current government seems keen to fuel the construction industry, launching initiatives such as the “Help to Buy” scheme, first time buyer ISA schemes and large investment in road, rail and infrastructure which directly, or indirectly, generates work for us all.

2015 started with a boom but Q3 and Q4 did see a slight tailing off in demand and confidence. This however, seems a small blip with the UK annual construction industry growth figures averaging out at 3.6% for 2015 and predicted to be even higher at 3.8% in 2016. The CPA (Construction Products Association) also predicts that we will see double digit growth between 2016 and 2019 in the UK construction industry, this has to be encouraging news.

Our success here at Ernest Doe is in part due to the industry leading franchise we hold. In 2015 we celebrated our 25th anniversary selling Hyundai construction equipment: a very long road and one which has led us to become the second largest Hyundai construction machinery dealer in the whole of Europe in terms of units sold per annum. Hyundai are now achieving over 10% UK market share in the 14 tonne and above class.

2015 saw the launch at PlantWorx of the new series Hyundai machines designated HX for excavators and HL for loading shovels. New features, better performance and improved driver comfort will cement further the customer acceptance and demand of the Hyundai brand which we are confident will bring new customers to our door.

You will read later in this magazine that our trading areas for both Thwaites and Bomag have been extended on the back of our increased sales and proven ability in our existing territory. Thwaites and Bomag are simply exceptional products, the

Rolls Royce in their field, and we are proud to be associated with both brands.

My thirst for construction industry related information is driven very much by our need as a company to have the correct machines in our yard for you to purchase when you want them. Most manufacturers work on factory lead times which can be up to six months in advance and thus calculating our forward orders on our supplies is critical.

Too many machines caused by a slowdown in our industry creates obvious stock issues, but probably more importantly, too few machines available to sell caused by an unexpected uplift in our industry can cause huge frustrations for both you and us. We need to get the flow right. So, if you know something I don’t about where our industry is going, be it short, medium or long term please let me know - your input would be most welcome.

All the best for 2016.

Hyundai Heavy Industries Europe introduce the new crawler excavator range – the mighty HX Series.

The new Hyundai HX heavy-line crawler excavators are the latest machines from the new Hyundai range of equipment. The new machines from the South Korean manufacturer come packed with high-end features that are standard, not options!

Improved efficiency – more green and cleanAt the heart of the new HX excavators from Hyundai is the very latest Cummins 4-cycle turbocharged air cooled diesel engine which complies with the latest emission standard Stage IV. Hyundai

NEW HX AND HL SERIES FROM HYUNDAI

report that, compared to the 9A series of machines, the HX range boasts a 90% reduction in NOX. Hyundai has chosen a combined and proven solution with EGR and SCR technology.

The larger 33 tonne HX330 L and the 38 tonne HX380 L have opted for the more powerful Cummins QSL9 300 HP (224kW) Stage IV engine. The QSL9 combines very high strength with a compact footprint, for one of the best power-to-weight ratios in its class. The largest machine in the new Series – the 52 tonne HX520 L is fitted with a Scania D13 084A 424 HP (216kW) engine.

The new HX range is fitted with an ECO

THE NEW HX220L

6

Gauge which enables the economic operation of the machines. The gauge level and colour display show engine torque and fuel efficiency levels. In addition the gauge indicates the status of fuel consumption such as average rate and the total amount of fuel consumed. The range can offer a reduction in fuel consumption from 6% to 12% - depending on the type of operation – in comparison to Hyundai’s 9A series of machines.

The IPC (Intelligent Power Control) controls power depending on work environments. Its mode can be selected and released on the monitor – on the excavation mode – pump flow can be easily controlled by a lever, reducing fuel consumption.

Cycle time improvementThe HX Series provides higher productivity onsite by faster operation: it can load trucks up to 5% faster and levels up to 4% faster than the 9A-Series. In order to achieve efficient grading, the HX series can apply boom float control using arm-in and arm-out operation only, allowing stable operation even in high-load work.

New, Exclusive Safety FeaturesNew safety features include Hyundai’s exclusive AAVM (Advanced Around View Monitoring) System for 360° surround virtual operating view which displays on the 8 inch cluster monitor. The system consists of an Around View Monitoring (AVM) system that give a 360° surround virtual operating view and, an Intelligent Moving Object Detection (IMOD) system, that senses and warns the operator when objects come within 16.5 feet (5 m) of the machine.

On the Hyundai HX series, the cabs are all ROPS (Roll Over Protection Structure) certified and, with Hyundai’s optional FOG (Falling Objects Guard), the cabs also meet FOPS (Falling Objects Protection Structure) Level 2 standards. Other safety features include boom safety lock as standard and arm cylinder locks as an option. An overload alarm with pressure setting customisable through the touch screen monitor is also standard.

New exterior design increases durability and safetyWith the new engine technology, the side vent openings have been made bigger to ensure better air flow to the engine.

The rear working lights have also been repositioned for a better view which is safer for the operator. A new machine guard has been installed and the air filters are now more accessible for maintenance.

The cabin has also been re-designed – a new larger front screen has been incorporated and the driver’s door is now easier to open from the inside with an additional handrail. The interior of the HX-cab offers 13% more space for the operator (compared to 9A-series). A newly developed air conditioning system provides better air circulation in the cab.

Enhanced Instrument Panel for Easier MonitoringOne of the most important innovations on the new HX series is the new and larger 8 inch touchscreen monitor – the cluster monitor displays information which mirrors what you would see on your smart phone and is 30% larger than previous models. It’s also easy to read and the main view of the screen can be adjusted according to the preferences of the driver. It can be controlled via touch control and/or the new haptic control switch, which is common in cars. Connecting to a mobile phone is easier than ever with the

bluetooth connection to the machine’s radio.

Hi-mate (Remote Management System)The machine is also fitted with Hi-Mate, which is a remote management system developed by HHIE. Through its satellite powered technology, customers can now enjoy an unmatched level of service and product support. With one press of the button, users are able to remotely evaluate machine performance, access diagnostic information and verify machine locations. It’s even possible to program a virtual ‘geo-fence’ to prevent the machine from leaving a specific area.

Reliability and ServiceabilityEnhanced reliability features on the HX Series include reinforced longer-life pins and bushings coupled with wear-resistant polymer shims and newly designed cab shock mounts with dual shock absorption for reduced vibration and noise, which also improves operator comfort. Serviceability enhancements include ground-level access to the fuel filter and convenient exterior access to the cab air filter. Additional guard rails provide greater safety while performing maintenance and inspections on the upper structure deck.

NEW EUROPEAN HEADQUARTERS FOR HYUNDAI

GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY

In the autumn of last year a significant ground breaking ceremony took place in Tessenderio Belgium.

Mr S G Rhee, the COO of the Hyundai Construction Equipment division of Hyundai Heavy Industries wielded his spade to remove the first sod in what is to be a €30 million investment for the company.

With its European headquarters already in Belgium, Hyundai has seen its sales across Europe grow to a point that the old premises were far too small.

Mr J C Jung, Managing Director of Hyundai Heavy

Industries Europe said, “Our new Headquarters will comprise a three storey, 5,400 square metre office building, a 13,000 square metre parts warehouse, a European training school, an events hall and a machine showroom.

“The new facility will allow us to better our level of service to our European dealer network and ultimately the level of service Hyundai provide to our end user customers. Our market share continues to grow in almost all European markets and we must grow with it.”

The construction works are due for completion by the end of this year (2016).

There can be no one who loves the truck and lifting business more than Shayn Winsor. He has been in the business for 22 years and every one of his trucks, bar one, has had a Cormach crane fitted to it.

“My first truck was a Bedford TK with a 650 HIAB,” said Shayn. “When I moved on to my second truck, a Scania P92 with a 16T/m Cormach, I felt like I was ‘King of the road’ and I’ve never looked back.”

Shayn, as proprietor of Valley Services operating from Wymondham in Norfolk, now runs a fleet of 20 specialist loading vehicles, mainly Volvo rigids and artics, each fitted with a Cormach. Currently the largest crane that Valley Services is operating is a 87T/m Cormach on a Volvo FH13 450.

He commented “I have always chosen Cormach because they have always done what I have wanted them to do. They are reliable, straight forward and don’t use too much electronic control which I think can be a hindrance rather than a benefit.

“If something does go wrong, we can usually find a way to sort it out ourselves. if not we call out Grahame Mills from Colchester and he’s out straight away to get us going again.

“One of the good things about dealing with Ernest Doe is that you talk on the phone to someone who is going to do the job, not some administrator who doesn’t really understand what you are on about.”

Valley Services has three yards and two warehouses. The business will lift virtually anything. They have done it all in the past, from heavy machinery to helicopters and boats. Many of their customers have been with them over a long period, some as long as 20 years.

One of their regular customers is a printing machine company which has been doing regular business with Shayn for 14 years. This work sees Valley Services trucks running across Europe with journeys to Poland and Turkey. “When you are sending trucks with lifting capability such long distances you want to know that the equipment is going to be reliable. You just don’t want a problem when the truck is so far away.”

Living with Cormach cranes for 20 years

Valley Services employs 25 people with two of them being mechanics to service the vehicles. The offices in Wymondham have just been refurbished and include a mix of the latest technology combined with tried and rested manual systems which keep Shayn on top of every truck movement. He still though manages to find time for his hobby of stock car and banger racing for which quick thinking and reliability are also a key part.

ExpansionSince Ernest Doe and BOMAG formed their trading relationship back in 2012, the volume of BOMAG equipment sold has grown extraordinarily. As a result BOMAG have awarded Ernest Doe a larger trading area, one previously covered by another dealer.

Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, Hertfordshire and North London have been added to Ernest Doe’s existing area of Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, East and West Sussex, Kent, South and East London.

Simon Kennedy, UK Sales Manager for BOMAG UK commented, “Our existing dealer has been with us for some 30 years. However, we felt Ernest Doe were better placed, not only to sell greater volumes of BOMAG equipment, but to also offer the level of after sales support

our customers deserve and expect”.

He went on to say, “Ernest Doe has the network of branches to grow their BOMAG business and with their offering of Hyundai and Thwaites, they complement our product range perfectly”.

Ernest Doe now sells and supports BOMAG products from all five of its specialist construction machinery branches. Parts are available from all 19 of its locations across East Anglia and the South East.

BOMAG AND DOE GROW TOGETHER

Back to Basics How many times, while on site, have the words “just drive backwards and forwards a few times, it’s easy, it’s only a roller” been said? The statement is probably correct, after all the modern roller is straight forward to operate, but like most things, all is not as it seems.

When has the correct degree of compaction been reached? Without knowing this, it’s not possible to decide when the compaction process is finished. After all, nobody these days has the

time or money to spend on unnecessary passes. BOMAG is a pioneer in measuring systems for compaction technology that helps you achieve optimal compaction results while saving time and money.

Unique in compaction technology:The BOMAG ECONOMIZER indicates the degree of compaction on a display enabling the operator to achieve optimum compaction results. It is very simple to use because no activation or calibration is required. The

10

Weighing in at 6,700Kg with a working width of 1.68mm, a Kubots Stage 1V engine and double drive pump system, giving a real gradeability of up to 61%, the BOMAG BW177DH-5 gives the usability and flexibility a modern job site demands. BOMAG single drum rollers are designed and built with six key areas in mind : • Strong Drive – Double pump drive • Strong Efficiency – ECOMODE power on demand • Strong Compaction - Real force where it’s needed • Ease of Transport – Safe loading every time • Ease of Service – Easy access filters no grease nipples • Ease of Handling – User friendly, clear controls Being the compaction specialists BOMAG can also offer optional practical technology where you need it. From the VARIOCONTROL intelligent adaptive compaction control system through to the BOMAG Terrameter for continuous compaction monitoring and the BCM 05 system for GPS located , compaction measurement, recording and reporting, one name offers it all.

More performance, less drama!

Economizer automatically determines compaction progress. A lighting strip or dial shows the operator when the process is finished to avoid over or under-compaction. A warning light gives advanced notice in case there is a risk of over-compaction.

Economic Compaction:Fewer passes not only save time, money and fuel, but also reduce wear and tear and ensure stress-free and flexible working on the site.

Easy and safe operation:• Start vibration (no separate

power-up or calibration)• Display to monitor the

progress and status of compaction

• Save time and money. Maximum compaction is achieved when the number of lamps in the display ceases to increase. If

there is a risk of excessive compaction, or the plate or drum cracks, a warning light appears and the operator can halt compaction.

BOMAG Economizer is available on Reversible Plate Compactors, Tandem Rollers of all sizes (with Asphalt Temperature display) and now on its infra red remote control multipurpose compactor, the BMP8500.

The Economizer on the BMP8500 is built into the hood, which means it’s easy to see and well protected. It also uses an ambient light sensor to brighten or dim the LED

depending on the light levels.

The BOMAG Economizer is the entry level compaction monitoring system available from the compaction specialists. For recording compaction results and documentation BOMAG can also offer its Terrameter for Single Drum Rollers, BCM

Start and BCM 05 for Single Drum Rollers and Heavy Twin Drum Rollers.

With BOMAG technology professional compaction can be measured and can save you time and money.

THWAITES DUMPERS MEET THE MARKET DEMANDS

Thwaites have been manufacturing site dumpers for over 75 years and maintain their market leading position by continuing to invest in their factory based in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.

As a privately owned business Thwaites focus on what they know best: site dumpers. Thwaites dedicate time and effort to ensure that their range of dumpers meet all the requirements of their customers, whether this is machine quality, health and safety or to ensure compliance with latest engine emission standards.

As a true manufacturer Thwaites investment in the latest technology is vital to their business. Recent capital expenditure includes: three laser profilers, new press brakes and a state of the

Ernest Doe Area Sales Managers with the 1 tonne to 10 tonne dumper range from Thwaites

art robot welder. Thwaites’ quality is also to be attributed to the skill of colleagues in their factory, these including machine operators, welders and those who take care in assembling the range of Thwaites dumpers.

“Key to our success is also the relationship we have with our nationwide distribution network and the enthusiasm and passion for our product by all those who work with us,” says Dave Chuck, Thwaites’ Sales Manager. “Ernest Doe continues to exceed our expectations with a dedicated team to focus on the construction sector and branch coverage in the south east region where our customers are never far from an Ernest Doe Depot.”

As we look ahead to 2016 the industry is in good health,

Thwaites are enjoying considerable success with their 9 tonne forward tip dumper which is now powered by the Deutz 55 kw Tier 4 Final compliant engine, it does not require AdBlue and operates without the need for ‘static regeneration’. The dumper is also fitted with low ratio axles to ensure that there is still plenty of torque for working in the most arduous of sites.

Stop PressWe are very pleased to announce that from 1st June 2016 we will be extending Ernest Doe’s territory to include the complete county of Kent.

with both construction and housebuilding firmly on the agenda. This has backing from both local and central government with their desire to build additional housing stock to meet growing demand for the increasing population.

Thwaites look forward to expanding their partnership with Ernest Doe during the

coming years to ensure that joint customers receive the best sales support in the region.

For the more observant of you out there, you may have noticed a decline in the number of New Holland Construction heavy line machines working in the UK. This is in the main due to the fact that the ten year global alliance between CNH Global NV (the parent company of New Holland) and Kobelco in Japan has come to an end and the two companies have gone their separate ways.

New Holland Construction has made the decision to concentrate on the compact sector of the market and now focus on Mini Excavators in the weight class 1.5 tonne to 5.5 tonne, skid steer loaders, loading shovels from 4.5 tonne to 15 tonne and, of course, the ever popular back hoe loader which boasts three ranges with many specification configurations to suit all applications.

James Emery, New Holland’s Construction Light Equipment

Manager, says “With our clear focus on the compact market the customer will be the biggest beneficiary of our extended compact range as we are able to better cover their equipment needs”.

James goes on to say, “Our New Holland Construction products are well known in the marketplace for their superior strength, reliability, productivity and resale values. With the after sales support provided by our dealer Ernest Doe, we are excited for the future.

“All machines are now built in our own European factories and we have total control over design, the components we use, the build process and scheduling. Our business is made easier to manage and thus we can offer our customers the right machines at the right time.

“The compact market in the UK is huge and one we intend to conquer,” ends James.

Now trading as Rose Builders Ltd, Steven took the Managing Director mantle just over 20 years ago. At that time the firm employed only a dozen men and with all machinery hired in as and when needed. Fast forward twenty years and Rose Builders Ltd now employs over 170 people with additional sub-contractors taking the total to regularly over 250. They now own their own fleet of some 80 machines from small dumpers to 21 tonne excavators.

“We are very proud of our workforce,” says Steven. “Some of my guys have

been with Rose Builders Ltd since they left school. Some have served almost 50 years with us and we have even had three generations of the same family on our books. Because of our stable workforce and the experience of the men, we have a reputation for quality building with an aim to combine tradition with innovation and craftsmanship.

“The majority of our workload is secured through the recommendation of existing clients and consultants and we are happy to take work on from the widest spectrum. For example, at the moment

ROSE BUILDERS LTD COMBINE TRADITION WITH INNOVATION AND CRAFTMANSHIP

we are constructing a traveller’s site in South Cambridgeshire at the same time as a subterranean £5 million basement extension, and have started work on a 150 unit housing project in Manningtree. Our work is varied!

“Past projects include prestigious award winning and substantial country houses such as Frogs Hall in Polstead and the new Birch Hall just south of Colchester but it is probably the house that Rose built for Living Architecture and designed in conjunction with Grayson Perry and featured in a Channel 4 TV documentary

STEVEN ROSE (FAR LEFT) ON SITE WITH A FEW OF HIS TEAM

It was way back in 1896 when Harry Rose, a bricklayer from Mistley in North East Essex, took the opportunity to start his own building business mainly on the back of the booming malting industry of the day. Some four generations later and now run by current Managing Director Steven Rose, the firm has grown from strength to strength.

14

that the firm is most remembered for.

“Described as ‘Game of Thrones meets The Hobbit’ and a ‘Taj Mahal upon the Stour’, the most unique ‘part Gingerbread House part Wayside Chapel’ house built in Wrabness had its challenges.” says Steven. “However, the whole project was great fun to work on and the result is outstanding. It was a once in a lifetime project and one that everyone involved in was very proud of.

“So to machinery. As our business grew

it was clear hiring machinery was going to be inconvenient and uneconomical. So, back in the early 2000’s we bought our first machines, a 2.5 tonne Komatsu Mini Digger and a New Holland Back Hoe Loader. Those machines were bought from Andy Parnham from Ernest Doe. Since then Andy and I have had many deals and, in the main, if Andy sells it I am very likely to buy it.

“With now over 20 Hyundai Excavator units in our fleet ranging from 2.5 tonne up to 21 tonne, Thwaites Dumpers and

BOMAG compaction equipment, Ernest Doe offers my business a good all round package and I know I can rely on them if and when the need arises.”

Steven Rose sees a bright future ahead for the firm and says “With the current government’s desire to fuel the economy through the construction industry, and the subsequent need for more housing, we see a healthy order book for the next five year period. We are looking forward to further expansion to meet the growing demand for our services.”

McRail Constructions Ltd t/a RMC Building & Civil Eng were established in 2012. They are a Civil Engineering company specialising in GroundWorks and Concrete Frames and cover London and Greater London areas with over 80 employees. This number increases annually.

McRail have built up a substantial client base through the years by being 100% committed to the Civil Engineering development in the UK and delivering a first class service to their clients. Damien McLoughlin, Director in control of all new plant purchased, chose the Bomag 8500 after reading of its capabilities and environmental aspects.

McRAIL CHOOSE BOMAG

Thames Valley Hire Services (originally Thames Valley Tool Hire) started business in July 1987 from 193, High Street, Egham, Surrey. The principal objective of hiring equipment to the local DIY and small builder market was soon found to be successful and enabled the company to quickly expand the range of tools and equipment hired. Increased demand for more yard and retail space led in early 1997 to the purchase of the adjacent premises at 194 High Street, Egham. Completion of major refurbishment facilitated the stocking of a far wider range of equipment for both hire and sale, significantly increasing market share within the area. In July 2007 the company purchased the previously long established business of Portatools Ltd in Uxbridge, Middlesex which today serves the local trade community with a comprehensive range of small tools, equipment and plant.

THAMES VALLEY HIRE SERVICES LTD - AVAILABILITY IS IMPORTANT TO US

“We like to run quality equipment,” comments Stephen Storey, Managing Director of Thames Valley. “We choose Bomag equipment for its reliability and acceptance by our customer base. Availability is important to us to satisfy our customers’ demands and we work with Ernest Doe to plan forward orders to meet our schedules - working together is so important to achieve our end goals.”

Established in November 2002 Eveready Hire Ltd is run by Colum Mannix, Managing Director of a growing and trusted plant hire business based in Leatherhead, Surrey, with its core business focussed in London and the surrounding counties.

With two further depots in Watford and South Godstone, the business has further plans for expansion in 2016 to service its customer base in Kent, East Sussex and the South Coast.

“Currently we employ 37 people,” comments Colum “and the cornerstone of our business is to offer our customers on time delivery with equipment that is up to date and that works as it should.

“We have now purchased many machines from Ernest Doe,” Colum continues “from Winget mixers, through

to Manitou telehandlers, Bomag compaction equipment, Thwaites dumpers and now Hyundai excavators. Rob Freestone, our Ernest Doe Area Sales Manager, and I have a great understanding of each other’s business needs and some of our mutual trading success has been due to the fact that Ernest Doe carries large stocks of new machinery; if we have a customer call for a hire and all our machines are out, one call to Rob and we can despatch our lorry to pick up a new machine from an Ernest Doe depot and thus satisfy the hire - it is pretty much like ‘click and collect’, or technically I suppose it is ‘call and collect’”.

Terra Paving Ltd, an asphalt and macadam service contractor in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire say, “We’ve been using the Bomag rollers for ten years and found the product to be reliable and cost effective. This, coupled with the first class service we receive from Ernest Doe, has proven vital due to the nature of our business”.

When purchasing an item of equipment, we know that you are looking for the complete package in terms of parts and servicing after delivery.

At Ernest Doe we have a total of 168 trained technicians, over 100 of whom are mobile and operate from a fully kitted out service van.

2015 InvestmentsIn 2015 we continued to invest heavily in additional tools and equipment.

One of our principal changes has been the introduction of fully featured smart phones for all of our mobile service technicians this year. Each technician now has their own email address and can also mobile hotspot to their service laptop to download information in the field. Two-way communication between technician and the service office is now greatly improved.

In this day and age, paper service manuals are less prevalent, with most information being in electronic format. Additional wiring diagrams and other

information can be sent to and from the office and/or downloaded straight from the manufacturer. Diagnostic information in the form of data log files or just photos can be sent straight back to the office. Where needed, these can then be passed straight onto the manufacturer for further analysis.

We continue to invest heavily in product specific special tools and manufacturers’ training. Between 10% and 20% of our technicians’ time each year is spent on training courses. We have also invested in 19 automated air conditioning machines. These new machines speed up and simplify what has previously been a very manual process. Extraction and re-charging of air conditioning systems is faster, with the major benefit that the technician can perform additional repairs or service work whilst the machine is working through its automated cycle.

This machine can also speed up any major repairs that take place within peak

season which often require disconnection of the air conditioning system. As you may know it is illegal to release refrigerant gas into the atmosphere. Our new machines allow the system to be vacuumed and then re gassed much faster and at the same time as commencing a major repair. All of our technicians are licensed to handle refrigerant gas.

As main line dealers for Hyundai, Thwaites, Manitou, Bomag and other brands, we need to make sure that we have the right tools in the right places, ensuring we fix faults for our customers as fast and efficiently as possible.

The ever-changing standards of engine emissions have been a continuing challenge for all equipment manufacturers and us the dealer. There are different emission standards governed by horsepower that combine with the obvious physical packaging constraints. The needs of a 1 tonne, 8 tonne, and 21 tonne excavator will be very different, meaning the manufacturer may need

to work with many different engine manufacturers. This results in the best engine and emissions solution for each size of machine. What does this mean for us as a dealer? Each engine will require different diagnostic tools and software to programme and control. Similarly our two-stroke equipment is also starting to require diagnostic equipment. We make sure that we keep abreast of these developments and order the relevant equipment.

ApprenticeshipsOur apprenticeship programme continues to go from strength to strength. We have 30 apprentices at different stages of development. Their training involves both college classroom courses and invaluable mentoring alongside our experienced technicians. We have produced a video in a bid to promote our apprenticeship scheme, which was well received and we will soon be recruiting for our 2016 intake. If you think you’ve got what it takes to become our next star technician please get in touch.

It was way back in 1947 when G A Cock & Sons was founded on Mersea Island in Essex as a general builder, but today the company, now known as Mersea Homes, is one of the region’s largest and most respected house builders.

Director, Darren Cock, is proud of his company’s achievements, especially now as the business embarks on its largest project yet - to build some 1600 houses on land the company bought ten years ago on the outskirts of Colchester in Essex.

Mersea Homes’ general policy is to sub-contract the muck shift operations involved in the builds, preferring to concentrate on what they are really good at - building houses. To this end Mersea Homes choose to run a number of Manitou Telescopic Handlers which carry out many of the jobs required in the house building process. “We have run Manitou machines since the 1980s,” Darren said, “first we had masted trucks but today we use telescopics which are much more versatile.

“Our current fleet consists of two 10m, one 11m and two 14m machines of which all the attachments we use are interchangeable to keep things simple. We like the Manitou’s visibility and compact size verses its reach capability. With the stabiliser legs down and the use of a lifting jib, we can pretty well achieve all the jobs on site, even the placing of roof joists and trusses, without the need to hire in a mobile crane which makes us much more efficient and ultimately saves us money.

“The JSM (Joystick Switch and Move) makes the Manitou very easy to drive,” comments Darren, “Having all functions on the one lever, including the forward and reverse operation, aids control when accuracy is paramount in such tasks as placing brick packs onto high scaffolds.

“Reliability of our latest Manitou machines has been faultless,” remarks Darren, “and if I do have an issue I know Ernest Doe are there to support me. That is very important as a breakdown can cost dearly if not rectified with haste.”

A MANITOU FOR MERSEA

Darren Cock, Mersea Homes Director and Lloyd Bywater, Machine Operator

Manitou the materials handling specialistsManitou recently celebrated 500,000 worldwide sales. The reputation of Manitou as a manufacturer of rough terrain telehandlers and forklifts for the construction market is renowned for top quality and robust machinery to tackle a diverse range of ‘on site’ materials handling.

With construction sites becoming more restricted for space, the solution from Manitou is the MT 625 which is a compact size telehandler with a lift height of 6 metres and load capacity of 2500kg providing exceptional performance.

With a width and height of less than 2 metres the MT 625 is designed to work in confined areas and is highly manoeuvrable with an impressive turning radius of only 3 metres. Three steering modes are available for selection, all wheel steer for a tight turning circle: crab steer for side approaches and front wheel drive for road travel.

A two speed hydrostatic transmission offers smooth gear changes with total flexibility and precision.

In common with the full range of Manitou telehandlers with lift heights from 6 metre to 18 metre, the MT 625 has the JSM (Joystick Switch and Move) control for single lever operation allowing the operator to carry out all functions with one hand.

Also available are 7 and 9 metre lift height telehandlers. Powered by a Deutz engine and torque convertor

transmission these popular machines are ideal for multi- purpose handling of build materials on busy construction sites.

Next size up is the mid- range Manitou MT telehandlers consisting of three models, the 8 metre lift height MT 835, the 11 metre MT 1135 and the 13 metre MT 1335. All encompass the latest design features with the two latter machines incorporating compact stabilisers which remain within the width of the machine when fully deployed.

Finally, the Manitou telehandler construction range is completed by the MT 1440 and MT 1840 with lift heights of 14 metre and 18 metre respectively. These high lift machines have excellent lateral and forward stability thanks to the stabiliser legs.

Safety is an important factor and the MT 1440/1840 models have many safety features as standard, including a stability indicator which cuts off ‘aggravating movements’. An automatic parking brake, a tilt lock out facility and a ‘digicode’ for security and immobilisation.

In addition to the Manitou construction telehandlers are the Rotary Telescopic Handlers with lift heights from 18 metre to 32 metre. These are truly 3 in 1 machines with the ability to perform as a telehandler, crane and access platform. A wide choice of front end attachments ensures the MRT’s are highly versatile machines for the most demanding of applications.

JDB CONTRACTORS & SON LTD TAKE NIMBLE, STRONG R125LCR-9A

Back in early 2015 Paul Benning from JDB Contractors & Son Ltd was seeking

a new forestry specification 13 tonne excavator for a series of new forestry contracts the company had won.

“I had heard a lot about the new Hyundai R125LCR-9a short radius machine from other users and the feedback was positive.

“I visited Ernest Doe at Albourne and drove the machine and subsequently placed an order for a new unit, fitted with a twin lock hydraulic hitch, buckets, thumb bucket, twin merge rotation pipework with a 1” bore return, FOPS guarding, vandal

guards, cylinder and valve guards and other modifications to suit the harsh conditions the machine was destined for.

“On delivery the machine weighed in at just over 14 tonnes, but it remained nimble and short enough to work in areas with limited access and strong enough to perform well in all conditions.

“We have been most impressed with our new Hyundai R125LCR-9a and it works well in all of our applications”.

The supply of parts to our construction based customers demands experience, knowledge, depths of stock, availability and an understanding by staff of the urgency of the breakdown. A thrown track or damaged hydraulic pipe means “Machine Down” and inflicts cost and penalty clauses upon the customer. We must react correctly to the situation you are faced with and ensure that we interpret your demands effectively.

To do this we need a team that can act swiftly and communicate both with our customer, in making sure we correctly identify the parts required, and with our key suppliers to order correctly as needed.

The majority of our requests for parts will come via the telephone into our dedicated phone team here at Head Office in Ulting. Led by Team Leader, Keith Mitchell, our Phone Team consists of a three man operation with many years of experience within the department who are dedicated to taking calls from customers in need.

Keith Mitchell specialises in Construction parts procurement. With over £350,000 of stock available for key brands we sell, he is confident we have the depth of availability, not only to provide service components, but also offer critical parts such as PCB boards, hydraulic motors and drive shafts to prevent further breakdowns.

Having sold Hyundai excavators for over 25 years we have built up a good understanding with our suppliers and have seen them improve supply of parts to the UK. Keith Mitchell works closely with our Purchase Team to make sure we maintain correct levels of stock to cater for not only our new customer base but also older units in the field. He is able to provide competitive quotations for under carriage components and has rubber tracks in stock for utility machines. The team also specialise in Thwaites Dumpers, Bomag Rollers and Manitou Telehandlers.

We always try to provide genuine parts from stock, but when components need to be ordered quickly the

Phone Team rely upon our Purchase Office Supervisor, Katie Easey. Katie has over 19 years of experience working very closely with Hyundai in Belgium and Korea plus Thwaites Dumpers in Warwickshire, UK and has built up a good relationship with these suppliers. Having visited Hyundai and Thwaites, Katie can often make the difference in the turnaround of a component because of her contacts.

Finally, we have the ability not only to deliver parts next day and in many cases on the same day, simply because we have good depths of stock parts, oil and grease that can be brought out to site by our mobile salesperson Marcus Taylor.

Marcus has 23 years of experience. Starting as a Parts Apprentice back in 1992, he is now one of our specialised team of Mobile Sales staff who offer competitive pricing, advice and support. Having gained invaluable experience working within the showroom and parts operation, Marcus understands the need for effective supply of parts and like all our staff he will

always promote the merits of using genuine manufactured components that are designed to fit correctly and endure the pressures they are placed under because they have undergone specific tests to ensure they perform. Can you really run the risk of a component failing nowadays by using a substandard “will fit” part?

Marcus and our other mobile sales staff specialise in lubricants of which we sell thousands of litres a year into the construction trade. Promoting our own brand oil supplied by the UK’s largest oil blender, Exol Lubricants, we can offer extremely competitive pricing. Check out our 205 litre barrels of Hydraulic 46 Oil at just £199.95 plus VAT on offer at the 2016 Doe Show with delivery available to site.

So, if you run Hyundai, Thwaites, Bomag or Manitou plant you can rely on us to deliver your parts with a friendly, understanding attitude, backed up by a wealth of knowledge, professionalism and dedication from staff you can trust to do their very best for you.
