Does AutoPIPE have my material?AutoPIPE has over 26 different piping codes with 39+ material files. In order to know what materials are available bydefault per each piping code, see the following procedure:

    1. Select, Tools> Model Options> General>

What is the name of your model material file?

Example: See above dialog, Piping code = ASME B31.3, 2006, and Material file = B313-06 .

    2. Select the following AutoPIPE help section:Help > Contents> Contents Tab> Reference Information> Libraries> Code Dependent Pipe Materials> and selectthe material library found in step #1 from the listing provided:

Scroll down the listing to see all the materials that AutoPIPE has availabel by default for this specific materiallibrary.

Review material properties:AutoPIPE facilitates dialog entry by automatically retrieving material information from its libraries. The Tools> Librarycommand allows the contents of a material and component library file (*.LIB) to be printed or scanned interactively.

The process is to select a table for viewing, and then the library name associated with it. In most cases, the "Libraryname" association will default automatically with the current model (specified in the System dialog when the model wascreated). However, it should be noted that any library may be viewed, not only those associated with the model. In fact, the Tools>Library command may even be launched without opening a model.

    1. Select Tools> Library>

    2. Select Table Type = Spec or Material

    3.

Material table contains general information about the material (i.e. Composition Code, Density, Poisson Ratio)and tabulated data (i.e. Temp vs Thermal Expansion vs Youngs Modulus) for each entry.

Specs table contains information about the specific material (i.e. Material, Material Group, Yield Stress, &Ultimate Strength) with tabulated data (i.e. Temp vs Allowable Stress) for each entry.

Note:1. The Specification data is connected to the Material data by Material Group name, the name must be exactly as

shown on the MATL table for the link to work.

    2. If a material has different values based upon Wall thickness, the material data will be separated as shown below:Example: A516-G70-sht. material has different data for wall thickness < 0.5 inch, < 1.00 inch,

Options to enter a new AutoPIPE materialIf you cant find your material specification in AutoPIPEs library files, you have 4 methods by which to enter a non-standard pipe material. Please select one of the methods below: #1, #2, #3, or #4.

Note: A good approach is to always copy an original file and rename it; example My_B313.lib (filename must be8 characters or less). By renaming it you are flagging that it is a customized file. It is also a benefit to haveseparate library files when you upgrade or update your version of AutoPIPE in some cases the existing /default files will be overwritten so by keeping your files separate you can copy them back into a new / revisedinstallation.

Method #1 ; Updated information on dialog / grid screens

On the pipe property dialog screen, select NS for the pipe material, and manually input values in the following fields:Cold allowable, Minimum Yield, Thermal Exp, Hoop modulus, Shear modulus, Density, Poissons (Ratio). Also, the userwould need to provide the correct Expansion, Hot modulus, and Hot allowable for the corresponding temperature onthe Press/Temp dialog screen.

Method #2 ; modify AutoPIPEs current material library.

AutoPIPE V8i 9.2 and higher: This is not an option, as this ability was removed from AutoPIPE V8i 9.2 and higher; pleaseselect option #1, #3, or #4.

AutoPIPE V8i 9.1 and lower: Before proceeding, suggest creating a copy and renaming one of the library files in theAutoPIPE directory (8 characters max, old dos format). Use the following key strokes to update the library spec ormaterial library

    1. Select Tools> Library

    2. Table type = Specs or material

    3. Library name = select a library file from the list. (suggested copy , renamed file)

    4. Action = Update

    4. Press TAB key once

    5. Type " autopipe "

    6. Press TAB key once.

    7. Press OK.

A blank display should pop up, allowing the user to enter in a new spec or material information.

Please see the following as an example of the dialog screen layout:

Note : Updating/Editing the libraries is only done in English units (except for Euromat.SRC file only).

    c. Thickness = 9999, and press the tab button.d. The entire table should now be populated with the existing library information.

    e. Modify the values as required and press OK.

Note: Updating the library files using this method has limitations: the SPEC tables are limited to a maximum of23 data pairs. Many of the existing materials have greater numbers of pairs than these limits, and if you fail tocorrectly update the data it could become corrupted and you will need to start over with the original file (whichis why it was suggested to use a copy of the original file).

    To modify existing information:

Print a copy of the Material and Spec tables using the Action = Scan feature for a particular Library name. Access the update screen as previously instructed.

    To modify existing SPEC information:

    a. Material ID = see printout; select a Material ID (i.e. CS, AU-TYPE 304, ect)b. Press the tab button 5x, the entire table should now be populated with the existing library information.c. Modify the values as required and press OK.

Note : Updating the library files using this method has limitations: the MATLS tables are limited to a maximum of15 data pairs. Many of the existing materials have greater numbers of pairs than these limits, and if you fail tocorrectly update the data it could become corrupted and you will need to start over with the original file (whichis why it was suggested to use a copy of the original file).

Method #3 ; Updating & Compiling Material Source Libraries .

AutoPIPE V8i v9.1 and higher already have selected SRC files copied to their hard drive during installation (C:\Bentley\AutoPIPE V8i\ Libraries\....). Please see the following AutoPIPE help section: Help > Contents> Contents Tab>Reference Information> Libraries> Building a Custom Library, for specific information.

SRC files can be opened in any text editor program. However, extreme care should be taken to maintain specificcolumn alignment. When making edits to the SRC file, highly suggested to change keyboard setting to Overwrite mode

instead of Insert mode. Also suggest using a program that provides cursor column and row location (ex.. UltraEdit byIDM computer solution, or Notepad ++.)

There are two tables within the library files that you will need to update:

MATLS - this contains generic descriptions of materials (for example CS = low carbon steel) and theirgeneral properties such as expansion rate and hot modulus

SPECS - this contains materials by specification (for example A106-B) and the allowable stress vstemperature values. It also calls up the particular MATL to use for example A106-B uses CS, A312-

TP304L uses AU-TYPE 304 etc. So every material in the SPEC section needs to call up a suitable/relevantMATL.

For additional information beyond that in the online help, request piping code specific document for details onworking with the SRC.

Mehtod #4. Bentley Updates Library files with User Supplied Information

Supply the following information to Bentley, who will then compile a new material library file.

(Note. TSG has an MS Excel spreadsheet to help enter the correct data, please request it. After receiving the spreadsheet, fill in the data using values with the correct units, and send back a Zip filecontaining the spreadsheet with highlighted PDFs of data sources for processing)

    1. What version of AutoPIPE are you using? Help > About> 8 digit number

    2. What piping code are you adding the material too?

    3. Typical information required:

    Material table:

    1. Name up to 12 characters (i.e. CS)2. Description up to 20 characters - (i.e. Low Carbon Steel)3. Density (lb/ft^3)4. Poissons Ratio5. Data for each row: (starting from lowest temperature to highest)

    a. Temperature (F)b. Expansion rate (in/100ft )c. Hot modulus (Msi)

    Spec Table section :

    1. Name up to 12 characters (i.e. A106-B)2. Description up to 20 characters (i.e. Carbon Steel)3. Yield stress (ksi)4. Data for each row:

    a. Temperature (F)b. Allowable stress (ksi)c. Yield strength stress (ksi)

When the new material file arrives: 1. Copy the new LIB file into your AutoPIPE root directory2. Start AutoPIPE, Select model to open3. Change material library, Tools> Model Options> General> Material, choose new material library.4. Verify values for various settings on both Pipe properties and Press/Temp/Pipe Id tabs of the input grid.

Remember , being a custom module, Bentley cannot be held responsible for the inaccuracy of the new librarycontent. It is your responsibility to verify the following information:

    a. Verification of data in the SRC fileb. Verification of data in the Press / Temp. dialogc. Verification of relevant data in the Pipe Properties dialog

Trouble shooting notes:1. The most common problems are due to format. As suggested above, move to the correct section in the SRC file,

select & copy the first entry, and insert/paste directly below it. Change the text editor to overstrike mode, moveto the different locations (keyboard arrows or mouse) and update the data as required. This will overwrite theoriginal data with new information preserving the format. Try to maintain column alignment.

    2. Add one material at a time; verify the compiled library in AutoPIPE before adding more entries. Another word, get the format and process down before mass producing.

    3. Ensure only the last entry starts in each section starts with an * mark.4. Verify your # of rows used and Total # of rows have the correct values.5. When hesitant, start with a fresh copy of the SRC file and try again.6. Updating / Editing the MATL and SPEC libraries can only be done in English units. AutoPIPE makes the conversion

to metric units base on the units file. Euro code is completely different and can only be updated with metric

units.7. If you cannot get your file to work correctly, please send the SRC file and LIB to Bentley TSG for review. Be sure

to include specific details on what is not functioning correctly.
