Does Truth Exist?

I. All truth is grounded in the nature of God and His word• Deut. 32:4• [4] He is the Rock, his work is perfect:

for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

Ps. 119:142,151

• [142] Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.• [151] Thou art near, O LORD; and

all thy commandments are truth.

It is impossible for God not to be true --- Titus 1:2

• [2] In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began

Heb. 6:18

• [18] That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

•II. What the Scriptures teach concerning truth

•1. There is spiritual truth – without it no one can learn how to

please God

There is truth - Jn. 8:31-32

• [31] Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;[32] And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Truth is revealed in the word of God - Jn. 17:17

• [17] Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

2 Tim. 2:15

• [15] Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

•2. To be of practical value the truth must

be KNOWN

Jn. 8:32

• [32] And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

•Know = To take in knowledge; to recognize, perceive and understand

1 Tim. 2:4

• [4] Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

• [7] Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

•3. Man must love truth

• By love we mean “a passionate devotion to understanding and living the truth”.

• [10] And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

• The following passages show the type of attitude that one must have toward God’s truth if we want to be pleasing to Him

Job 23:12

• [12] Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

Mt. 5:6

• [6] Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled

Jn. 7:17

• [17] If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

Acts 17:11

• [11] These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Those who do not love the truth –Rom. 1:28

• [28] And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

•4. We must believe the truth

2 Th. 2:10-12• [10] And with all deceivableness of

unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.[11] And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:[12] That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Look at the young prophet who believed a lie – 1 Kings 13• Vs. 18 “But he lied unto him”• Vs. 26 “It is the man of God, who

was disobedient unto the word of the LORD”

•5. Knowing the truth we must obey the commands of the

truth

• [22] Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:

• [6] If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

• [4] He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him

•6. Things we should do and things we

should not do concerning the truth

• [12] Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.

• [7] Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?
