Dog Days of Summer The sultry “dog days” of summer might spark visions of listless canines baking in the oppressive heat, but the moniker has nothing to do with panting pooches. Instead, it’s a throwback to the time when ancient civilizations tracked the seasons by looking t o the sky. The ancient Greeks noticed that summer’s most intense heat occurred during the approximate 40-day period in the early summer when Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, rose and set with the sun. To them it was simple math. The daytime addition of the warmth of Sirius— ancient Greek for “glowing” or “scorcher”—to the blaze of the sun equaled extreme heat. According to Greek mythology, Sirius was the dog of the hunter Orion, and the ancient Romans placed the star in the constellation Canis Major (Latin for “Greater Dog”). The Romans thus referred to the sweltering period when the rising of the sun and Sirius converged as the “dies caniculares” or “days of the dog star.” By the 1500s, the English world began to call the same summertime point on the astronomical calendar as the “dog days.” UPCOMING EVENTS Here are just a few of the exciting highlights we have scheduled for the month of August: Thursday, August 1 st Bringing Nature Home film by Doug Tallamy 3:00 pm AU Tuesday, August 6 th Front Street Brewery Tour and dinner 3:15 pm TR Monday, August 19 th Topsail Beach trip & Lunch 9:15 am TR Friday, August 23 rd Resident/Associate Field Day 11:00 am OUTSIDE Community Life Services Department Offices located next to the Wellness Center across from the gym Alycia Williams Community Life Services Manager 910.821.8050 [email protected] Tenesha Powell Activities Coordinator 910.772.3116 [email protected] Office hours Wednesday-Thursday Open 10:30 am – 2:30 pm 2019

Dog Days of Summer

The sultry “dog days” of summer might spark visions of listless canines baking in the oppressive heat, but the moniker has nothing to do with panting pooches. Instead, it’s a throwback to the time when ancient civilizations tracked the seasons by looking to the sky. The ancient Greeks noticed that summer’s most intense heat occurred during the approximate 40-day period in the early summer when Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, rose and set with the sun. To them it was simple math. The daytime addition of the warmth of Sirius—ancient Greek for “glowing” or “scorcher”—to the blaze of the sun equaled extreme heat. According to Greek mythology, Sirius was the dog of the hunter Orion, and the ancient Romans placed the star in the constellation Canis Major (Latin for “Greater Dog”). The Romans thus referred to the sweltering period when the rising of the sun and Sirius converged as the “dies caniculares” or “days of the dog star.” By the 1500s, the English world began to call the same summertime point on the astronomical calendar as the “dog days.”

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

a way to get involved? Call or email Alycia in CLS for details.

Volunteers Wanted for the Davis Library: The Davis Auxiliary is looking for a volunteer to take the

position of Librarian for the libraries at Davis and Champions. Duties include entering new book

titles into the database, selecting appropriate books, scheduling volunteers to rearrange books,

etc. for just a couple of hours a week. They would also attend the Auxiliary Board of Directors

meetings once a month. Contact: Barbara Merten, Auxiliary Board, Vice President, 910.319.6033

Valerie Smith at 910.798.6406, or email [email protected]

Phone Pals for Friendship is an outreach program that matches volunteers with elderly

homebound residents to provide much needed companionship with a weekly phone call. Trained

volunteers are given the same clients to call each week, which creates a sense of friendship with

the resident.

Cape Fear Literacy Council needs volunteers to serve as tutors to assist children and adults with

reading education and to teach English as a second language.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is a national service program of the

Corporation of National and Community Service. RSVP works to match the varied interests and

skills of volunteers with community needs by offering a diversity of volunteer service

opportunities through a wide range of placements in New Hanover County who need them the

most.

Any volunteer opportunities you’d like to see here? Call Community Life Services at

910.821.8050, and we will add it to the next newsletter. Also, don’t forget, if you have five or

more residents committed to go, we can arrange transportation (2 weeks in advance is standard).

“May we live with EASE” Catherine Ibsen, Ph. D., RYT500

For Plantation Village August – 2019

There is a classic prayer that illustrates the path to the end of suffering. “May we have the serenity to accept the

things we cannot change, the skills and courage to change the things we can and the wisdom to know the

difference.” Although written by a Christian theologian, Reinhold Niebuhr, the prayer is also a succinct expression

of Buddha’s teaching on wholesome states of mind. However, the Buddha taught that the state of serenity is not

something to be just prayed for, it is something we can practice; it is a skillful state of mind. In Pali, the language of

Buddha’s early teachings, the word for serenity is passaddhi. Typically passaddhi is translated as tranquility and it is

one of the seven wholesome mindstates that are to be cultivated because they lead to wisdom, the ability to see

things as they really are.

The Anapanasati Sutta, the shorter of the two lectures from the Pali Canon on mindfulness, suggests that we

cultivate passaddhi, calm, by becoming intimate with the experience of the inbreath and the outbreath. We are

instructed as follows…

One trains oneself: “Sensitive to the whole body, I breathe in. Sensitive to the whole body, I breathe out.”

One trains oneself: “Calming the whole body, I breathe in. Calming the whole body, I breathe out.”

When I practice with this teaching by sitting and just watching my breath flow in and out, one thing I notice is that

the inbreath is accompanied by a slight increase in bodily tension as the diaphragm contracts, the ribs expand and

the shoulders lift slightly. On the outbreath there is a noticeable release of this tension. These are fairly easy

sensations to follow as we begin meditation practice and I often condense the instruction to something like, “I

breathe in aware of the whole body (scanning the body with my awareness) and I breathe out calming the whole

body.” As we become more focused and the practice deepens, the breath movements become more subtle, the

words drop away and there is just the awareness and calm. Our brains begin the shift from being agitated to being

quiet and at ease. If we are mindful, we notice this state of calm, tranquility and ease. When we can simply watch

that mind state with openness and curiosity, we are able to experience the intrinsic pleasure of the state of calm.

The breath is only one of many focal points that we can use to train our brains to enter a state of calm. Some

traditions use words that are repeated silently. Some use sophisticated counting strategies like a rosary and some

use movements like Sufi whirling or yoga postures. It is the nature of the mind to be easily agitated and disturbed

by worries; the brain is our trouble shooter. Looking for trouble is its job. However, the more we practice, the

more skillful we can become at dropping the agitation and intentionally creating a calm and open mind state.

When we are faced with a problem or challenge, the calm allows us to see more clearly what the situation needs

and respond wisely. This is a skill that anyone can acquire with practice and is fundamental to building a life worth

living.

What: Bringing Nature Home film by Doug Tallamy

When: Thursday, August 1 at 3:00 pm

Where: Auditorium Plantation Village

Who: Charley Winterbauer and Michael Abicht: Co-chairs for the SE chapter of the NC Native Plant Society?

Does Your Yard Need Biodiversity? How do human and animals benefit from interactions with plants and insects? Learn what the research reveals in this video. All in attendance will receive two colorful pamphlets on "Native Plants for Birds: Coastal Plain" and "NC Coastal Landscaping, A Native Plant Guide Provided by the Coastal Landscapes Initiative."

The event features a video program by Doug Tallamy, author of "Bringing Nature Home: How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants." Tallamy, a professor in the Department of Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, has authored 88 research publications and lectured on a variety of environmental topics throughout his 36-year career. The video, recorded at one of Tallamy's Wilmington-area visits, carries a message of hope and offers practical methods to help our environment and its creatures recover and sustain life. Tallamy's presentations convey a wealth of ecology facts. "All energy is captured by plants, and all animals get their food from plants," he says. "Insects are the most important group of animals that transfer energy captured by plants to other animals. For example, 96% of all terrestrial birds rear their young on insects. No insects; no baby birds." By gardening with native plants--no matter where you live or how small or large your urban landscape is--you can help sustain wildlife.

Charley and Mike can use their experience with native plants to suggest various plants/ideas for the Plantation Village landscape. They will show the video and an option of a very brief slide show of examples of plants and we can discuss or do a brief look around the area, if interested.

Event is sponsored by The Cape Fear Audubon Society www.capefearaudubon.org and the SE chapter of the NC Native Plant Society www.ncwildflower.org.
