Students enroll in these three courses, which meet concurrently in the fall semester, followed by two weeks of travel to Dominica in January. Students experience firsthand the challenges facing, and progress toward, sustainable development on the self-proclaimed “Nature Island.” Dominica experiences include working in a banana farm, visiting a beach where endangered sea turtles nest, hiking to a Boiling Lake, and bird watching for the endangered imperial parrot. Students also lead educational activities with village communities. In ART199, students learn the history and practice of visual journaling: the art of observation, note-taking, sketching, and painting on location to visually record a travel experience. Students are encouraged to apply for travel scholarships through the Global Education program.
