Principal’s Message
Welcome to Titan Territory! I look forward to working together with you again this year as we build upon the extraordinary
legacy of previous generations of Titans! The first priority at Dominion High School has always been the continuation of
our caring community, a place where human kindness, common courtesy, mutual trust, and appreciation for our diversity
reign supreme. Within such a culture, we can focus our attention on the pursuit of excellence for each and every member of
our community.
In order for our community of learners to reach its full potential, members of the staff, student body, and community share
significant responsibilities. Included in this handbook is a clear statement of the high expectations to which all of our
students will be held. Remember that these expectations are in place for the mutual benefit of each and every Titan. Please
study this handbook carefully and commit yourself to faithful fulfillment of its provisions. In doing so, I am confident that
you will find individual success while supporting the achievement of your peers.
On the front page of this agenda, you will see our dreams for your future spelled out in our Mission Statement. While you
will be held accountable to the highest possible standard of excellence, you will quickly discover that these expectations can
easily be met within our supportive learning environment. Our staff is dedicated to your individual and collective
achievement. This dedication is embodied in our statement of core commitments, which we call The Titan Ten. Every day
we will take time to celebrate and encourage attitudes and behaviors that define what it means to be Truly Titan.
I look forward to working with you as we continue to foster school spirit, build upon existing traditions, and extend the
foundation of excellence at Dominion High School.
Truly yours,
John Brewer

“The Titan Ten”
Dominion High School’s Core Commitments
In order to fulfill the mission of Dominion High School, each and every member of the community will…
…accept responsibility for his/her actions.
…act as a role model in all endeavors, demonstrating courtesy, trustworthiness, school pride, and positive sportsmanship.
…commit to life-long learning.
…develop caring relationships among students, staff, family, and community members.
…encourage each and every student to work to his/her fullest potential.
…promote student growth through active involvement in academics, activities, arts, athletics, and community service.
…recognize achievement wherever and whenever we find it.
…respect the dignity, individuality, and rights of self and others.
…strive for excellence while maintaining our sense of fun.
…work together to establish a positive learning environment in the school, the home, and the community.
Academics
A Focus on Your Future: A primary component of our mission is to create an environment that provides you with the
opportunities, challenges, and reasonable supports necessary to achieve academic success and meet the demands of life after
high school. There are two essential requirements for you to graduate. First, you must successfully complete course work in
required and elective classes. Second, you must pass a specific number of Standards of Learning (SOL) tests. We believe
that you are capable of learning and that by working together we can help you reach your potential and obtain your diploma.
4
Course Selections: Each spring, you will meet with your clubhouse manager and school counselor to review your long-term
goals and the progress that you are making toward their fulfillment. During this time, you and your parents will work with
your counselor and teachers to update your comprehensive academic plan as you select those courses that most directly
support your long-term educational goals. You will be guided in your efforts by the Loudoun County Public Schools’
Program of Studies, which outlines diploma requirements and course descriptions.
Assessment and Grading: Teachers will use a variety of assessments to monitor your academic progress and derive your
grade each nine weeks. Assessments include, but are not limited to, tests and quizzes, projects, presentations, displays,
reports, class participation, preparedness, and homework. The school year is divided into two semesters and each semester
is divided into two quarters that are nine weeks in length. You will receive a cumulative grade at the end of each quarter. At
the end of each semester, you will take a two-hour exam in each course. The exam counts 20% of the semester grade with
each of the two quarter grades counting 40%. Final grades are an average of the first semester and second semester grades.
Grading Scale:
A+ 98-100 B+ 87-89 C+ 77-79 D+ 67-69 F 59-below
A 93-97 B 83-86 C 73-76 D 63-66
A- 90-92 B- 80-82 C- 70-72 D- 60-62
Goal-Setting, Interim Reports, and Report Cards: Every nine weeks, you will establish specific personal goals for each
course that you are taking. At the midpoint of each quarter, your teachers in all of your courses will write your interim
grades on your goal-setting sheet. Each quarter you will also receive a report card. The report card will be given to you
approximately seven working days after the end of the quarter. You are responsible to take the report card immediately to
your parent/guardian(s). At the end of the school year, final report cards are mailed home. The dates for goal-setting, interim
grade reporting, and report card distribution are all noted on the calendar of your student agenda.
Promotion: You must earn five (5) credits in ninth grade to be promoted to tenth grade. In order to be promoted to eleventh
grade, you must have earned a total of eleven (11) credits. In order to be a considered a senior, you must be scheduled to
meet all graduation requirements by June.
Extra-Curricular Activities A Focus on Our Future: In addition to our pursuit of academic excellence, our mission statement also focuses on
preparing you for responsible citizenship. We will provide you with many opportunities to serve your community as a
positive role model, while respecting the dignity of every member of our diverse community. We believe that you will be
called upon to exhibit leadership in your future. We strive to help you exercise this leadership with courtesy, character, and
integrity in all situations. In order to fulfill this commitment to you, we will insist that you become involved in the extra-
curricular program in a meaningful way.
Students will be encouraged to participate regularly in at least one extra-curricular activity. If you need any assistance
identifying an activity of interest to you, please stop by the Athletic Office or Room L613. The activities’ staff will be
delighted to help you. Furthermore, your clubhouse manager, school counselor, and teachers will work with you to identify
an extra-curricular program that will complement your academic program of studies. Generally speaking, there are four
ways that you can become involved in the extra-curricular program.
Performing Arts: There are numerous opportunities for you to express yourself artistically through participation in
performing groups. From the marching band to select vocal ensembles, multiple dance teams, and a full-scale theatre arts
program, you will be able to participate in a performing group of your choice whether or not you are able to include a band,
choral, or drama class in your schedule.
Governance: As a member of the Student Council Association (SCA) or class council, you develop leadership skills while
serving your school community as a responsible citizen and positive role model. While class council meetings are held
before and after school, as an SCA officer you will take a leadership class that meets every other day.
5
Activities: We will help you create a wide range of student-led clubs and activities to provide you with an opportunity to
serve your community, learn to respect self and others, and more fully enjoy your high school experience. Generally
speaking, club meetings are held once per week before or after school, with occasional special events on weekends.
You should follow these steps if you wish to create a new club at Dominion High School. The organization will not be
considered an official Dominion High School club or activity until these items have been completed.
1. Meet with the activities coordinator to discuss your proposal.
2. Find a staff member to serve as the sponsor for the club.
3. Pick up an application for a new organization from the Athletic Office or Room L613.
4. Complete the form and return it to Room L613.
5. The request will then be reviewed by the activities coordinator and the athletic director and forwarded to the principal
for approval.
6. Once a decision has been reached regarding your proposal, the activities coordinator will notify you and your sponsor.
Athletics: Dominion High School offers a full range of athletic opportunities. Dominion High School is a member of the
Dulles District in Region II of the Virginia High School League (VHSL). Consequently, you must meet specific eligibility
guidelines in order to participate. Involvement as a member of an athletic team is a significant leadership responsibility that
requires you to serve your community as a positive role model of courtesy, character, and sportsmanship.
Athletic contests can either positively or negatively affect an individual's self-respect and respect for others, as well as their
courage, responsibility, integrity, teamwork, loyalty, compassion, tolerance, courtesy, fairness, and humility. The Titan
community is united in making every athletic contest fun and rewarding for all participants, players, fans, coaches, and
officials. As a participant or spectator at an athletic event, you will be expected to demonstrate positive sportsmanship.
The Titan “High Fives" to Sportsmanship:
1. Maintain self-control at all times. A prerequisite of sportsmanship requires you to understand your own biases. Your
desire to win must not overcome rational behavior. A proper perspective must be maintained if the potential educational
value of athletic competition is to be realized.
2. Recognize and appreciate skill in performance regardless of affiliation. Applause for a good performance of an
opponent is a demonstration of generosity and good will. The ability to recognize quality in performance and the
willingness to acknowledge it without regard to team affiliation is one of the most highly commendable gestures of
sportsmanship.
3. Show respect for the opponent at all times. The opponent should be treated as a guest, greeted cordially, and afforded
the respect and dignity that everyone in our community deserves.
4. Show respect for the officials. The officials should be recognized as impartial arbitrators who are trained to do their
job and who can be expected to do it to the best of their ability. Sportsmanship implies the willingness to accept and
abide by the decisions of the officials.
5. Know, understand, and appreciate the rules of the contest. A familiarity with the current rules of the game and the
recognition of their necessity for a fair contest is essential. Good sportsmanship suggests the importance of conforming
to the spirit, as well as the letter, of the rules.

1. Decisions concerning an athlete’s or manager’s eligibility to participate in the athletic program will be made by the
local school administration subject to VHSL Rules and Regulations.
2. All participants are to abide by all school rules for student conduct; they are to conduct themselves at all times in a
manner that brings credit to themselves and as representatives of Loudoun County Schools.
3. The athlete must report athletic injuries to the coach or athletic trainer immediately upon occurrence. Failure to report
injuries will result in the athlete’s parents assuming responsibility.
7
4. Participants must travel to and from events with their team, unless prior approval is given by the coach, monitor or local
school administration.
5. All students are expected to abide by the rules established by Loudoun County Public Schools regarding practice
schedules and excused and unexcused absences from practice.
6. Any student who is participating in the activities program and who becomes involved in a situation which is detrimental
to the program and/or school can expect disciplinary action, in accordance with school rules for behavior of students,
deemed appropriate by the coach, director, or monitor and local school administration.
7. In order to participate in an activity or practice on any given day, a student must report to school by 9:15 a.m. and must
remain in school and in class that entire day. Exceptions may be made for doctor or dental appointments or reasons
excused by the principal. A doctor/dental note is required for this exception.
8. Any student serving suspension or in-school restriction for violation of school rules will be ineligible to practice or play
in a scheduled event on the day or days he/she is serving the punishment, including Saturdays.
9. Any athlete or manager who uses or possesses tobacco, drugs, or alcohol during a sports season will be dismissed from
the team.
10. Any athlete or manager may resign from a team anytime before the final squad is selected without sacrificing his or her
availability to participate for any other sport during the sports season if the other sport has not secured its roster.
11. When an athlete or manager resigns or is dismissed from a team after the first game, match or meet, he or she will be
ineligible to participate in sport specific out-of-season instructional activities until the team from which he or she
resigned or was dismissed has concluded all regular season activities. Students may attend weight-lifting sessions and
conditioning open to the general school population.
12. Any athlete who is ejected from a game by an official during the regular season will automatically be suspended for at
least one subsequent game. The coach and administration may take additional disciplinary measures in accordance with
school rules. If the disqualification occurs in the final contest of the season (including playoffs and tournaments), the
penalty shall carry over to the next sports season for students who are seniors in eligibility or to the next school year for
underclassmen. A second violation in the same sport shall carry a minimum two-contest suspension.
13. An athlete may not participate in more than one sport per season.
Conflicts in Extra-Curricular Activities: The activities and athletic department recognizes that each student should have
the opportunity for a broad range of experiences in the area of extracurricular activities, and to this end, will attempt to
schedule events in a manner to minimize conflicts. An individual student who attempts to participate in several
extracurricular activities will, undoubtedly, be in a position of conflicting obligations. Students have the responsibility to
reduce the likelihood of frequent conflicts by being cautious about joining too many organizations. Students are also
responsible to notify directors, sponsors, and coaches of potential scheduling conflicts.
Student Rights & Responsibilities A Focus on Responsible Citizenship: As we pursue our mission to prepare you for responsible citizenship, you will be held
accountable for the highest possible behavioral expectations within an environment that is overwhelmingly supportive of
your success. The hallmark of Dominion High School is an absolute dedication to The Titan Ten, our community’s core
commitments. These commitments represent primary expectations upon which your behavior will be judged at all times.
You will quickly notice that our staff will regard you as a young adult within our community. At the core of The Titan Ten is
the belief that all members of our community should be trusted with adult responsibility. Thus, you will be given privileges
within our school community that must be exercised with courtesy, character, integrity, and respect for self and others.
In order to promote trusting interactions between staff, students, and members of our community, expectations for your
conduct will be directly taught and modeled by your teachers. If concerns arise regarding your behavior, efforts to re-teach
expectations will be offered quickly, clearly, and patiently. If you consistently fail to exhibit responsible behavior, you
should expect that your personal privileges will be temporarily impacted. Our goal is to work with you until we have helped
you become successful.
There are several specific areas of responsible conduct that merit special attention and will be the focus of staff efforts to
ensure your success.
8
Attendance The first and most important step that you must take to ensure your success is to attend school each and every day that it is
in session. Your teachers, school counselor, assistant principal, and principal will be looking for you in each class every
single day. You will be missed when you are not in school, and we will be certain to communicate this to you and your
parent/guardian(s). If you develop regular attendance habits, we are confident that you will find success at Dominion High
School. If, however, you find yourself absent more than 10% of the days that school, or any specific class, is in
session, you will risk loss of credit for the course, regardless of the grade earned.
Excused Absences: School board policy recognizes that there are circumstances under which you may be legitimately
absent:
Personal illness
Death in the family
Medical or dental appointments
Court appearances
Religious holidays
Illness in the immediate family
Emergencies that are approved by the principal
Trips or activities that enhance or extend the student’s education, when approved by the principal in advance.
Procedure for an Excused Absence: If you must be absent from school for one of the reasons shown above, please have
your parent/guardian call the attendance office at 571.434.4404 by 10:00 AM to verify the absence. If your parent/guardian
has not called by 10:00 AM on the day you are absent, your parent/guardian will be called to verify the absence. Any
absence not confirmed by your parent/guardian will be considered unexcused.
Procedures for an Early Dismissal: You may only be released early from school for one of the reasons listed on the
previous page. In most cases these dismissals will be anticipated in advance. Under such circumstances, you should follow
these procedures:
You should submit a written request from your parent/guardian to the attendance office by 8:55 AM. The request must
include the telephone number where your parent/ guardian may be reached for confirmation of the dismissal.
Before leaving school, you must confirm that the request has been approved and then must sign out in the attendance office.
Occasionally, you may become suddenly ill during the school day. In this situation, you should obtain permission from your
teacher to visit the nurse’s office. The nurse will try to help you remain in school. However, if the nurse determines that you
are too ill to remain in class for the day, your parent/guardian will be contacted to obtain permission for you to leave school
early. Once again, you must sign out of the attendance office before leaving school property.
Procedure for an Excused Tardy: Occasionally, you may arrive at school later than 9:00 AM for one of the reasons listed
under “Excused Absences.” Under such circumstances, you should bring a note from a parent, guardian, clerk of the court,
or physician that states the reason for the late arrival. If you arrive late to school for any reason, you should report directly to
the attendance office upon your arrival to school.
Making Up School Work After An Absence: Whenever a student is absent, whether an excused or unexcused absence or a
suspension absence, a reasonable amount of time, consistent with the length of the absence, will be given to the student to
make up the work missed. Upon return from absence, the student is responsible to initiate immediate action to make up the
work. Upon such request of the student, the teacher is responsible for providing assignments, tests, and other work that must
be made up and informing the student clearly when makeup work for which grades will be given is due. Failure to complete
such make-up work within the time allowed will result in a failing grade for those assignments, tests, or other work. Make-
up work turned in within the time allowed will be graded on the same basis as other work.
9
Achievement
Fundamental to our mission is the notion that we will all “work hard to achieve academic excellence.” Your teachers, school
counselor, clubhouse manager, assistant principal, and principal are committed to your academic success. You can expect
them to work as a team in a partnership with you and your parent or guardian to promote your success. As the most
important partner on this team, you should be prepared to “strive for excellence.”
Clubhouse: As we strive to promote your fulfillment of the Dominion High School Mission Statement, you will be assigned
to a clubhouse. Your clubhouse will serve as your homeroom, but will also allow us to accomplish a wide range of
important purposes in your overall school experience. As a member of a clubhouse, you will be surrounded by a deliberately
selected group of fellow students and a clubhouse manager who will ideally work with you for four consecutive years.
During clubhouse period, we will focus on your future by helping you establish and monitor your progress toward personal
goals. We will also take time each Wednesday for Silent Sustained Reading and, occasionally, we will engage in activities
designed to enhance your leadership, service, character, and respect as a citizen in our school community. Since clubhouse
engages nearly every member of our school staff, it is important that you arrive to your clubhouse in a timely manner and
remain there for the entire period. The library and nurse’s office are closed during clubhouse as we work individually with
you.
Titan Time: In order to help you achieve, your team will hold you responsible to be prepared for class on a daily basis and
to actively participate in class at all times. You will have approximately 90 minutes every other day during a period that we
call Titan Time to obtain any extra assistance that you may need. During Titan Time, your teachers in the core academic
areas will share a common mission of supporting your pursuit of excellence.
We believe that Titan Time is one of the most important class period of the school day, since it is a time when we can work
flexibly to meet your individual needs. You should anticipate that your teachers will frequently make plans to work directly
with you during this time to help you find academic success. At times you may be summoned to a teacher’s room for
additional instruction or assistance or to complete an unfinished assignment. At other times, your teachers may plan lessons
on study skills or celebrations of your success during Titan Time. You will find a schedule of planned Titan Time activities
on the pages of your student agenda. When your teachers have not planned other activities, you should use Titan Time to
study or work on assignments. You should always be prepared to use your time wisely during Titan Time by arriving on
time, bringing plenty of work to do, and remaining in your assigned seat throughout the period.
Electronic Devices: Since electronic devices, such as radios, electronic games, cell phones, and IPODs do not contribute
directly to our mission, they should be locked securely in your locker from 9 AM to 3:48 PM. Dominion High School
cannot assume responsibility for such devices that are lost or stolen.
Conferences: There may be times when all of the members of your instructional team should meet together. You, your
parent or guardian, or any of your teachers may call such a meeting. These meetings may be held during Titan Time in order
to facilitate participation by all members of the team.
Academic Integrity: You will be trusted to do your own work on all assignments. The Honor Code should guide your
efforts as you make every attempt to maintain your integrity as a scholar. By school board policy, students found
misrepresenting the truth in this regard will receive a zero on the applicable assignment, quiz, test, or project.
10
Dominion High School Honor Code It is the right, privilege, and responsibility of each and every Titan to contribute to and maintain an environment of trust and
academic integrity. All Titan community members are expected not to cheat, plagiarize, lie, commit forgery, or steal.
Cheating includes, but is not limited to:
Requesting or providing unauthorized assistance on an assignment.
Using unauthorized study aids during a test.
Copying another student’s work, including homework assignments.
Deliberately allowing another student to copy your work.
Passing test or quiz information regarding an assessment on to students who will be taking the assessment at
another time.
Using a translator (electronic or other) on any world language assignment.
Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to:
Presenting the ideas, opinions, or work of someone else without giving proper credit.
Insufficient acknowledgement of all sources of information including, but not limited to: print materials, visual
materials, oral presentations, and electronic media.
Lying and Forgery include, but are not limited to:
Deliberately telling an untruth or falsehood to administrators, faculty members, or other staff members.
Any form of deceit, attempted deception, or fraud.

Stealing includes, but is not limited to:
Taking without the right or permission to do so, the schoolwork or materials of another student or the materials of a
teacher.
To avoid compromising your integrity, when in doubt, ASK a teacher or administrator for clarification.
Acceptable Use of Technology: At Dominion High School, you have access to telecommunications services and, through
them, an avenue to the Internet. You will use telecommunications and the Internet to participate in learning projects outside
your community, to ask questions of and consult with experts, to communicate with other students, and to locate information
to meet your educational needs.
However, with access to computers and people all over the world, there is an availability of material that may not be of
educational value in the context of the school setting. Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) does not condone the use of
such materials and does not permit the usage of inappropriate materials in the school environment. Also, LCPS is not
responsible for the accuracy or the quality of information obtained through the Internet.
You need to act responsibly when using computer equipment and networks at Dominion High School for any purpose. You
must use appropriate language and exhibit mature behavior on computers and networks. Malicious behavior on equipment
or systems could be in violation of School Board Policy §8-27 and subject to disciplinary action.
LCPS staff will monitor your usage of Internet access. As a student, you will be observed closely by school personnel as you
use telecommunications in the school building. You will acknowledge these Acceptable Use Practices before using
telecommunications services at Dominion High School by returning an agreement form to the school.
11
Attitude At Dominion High School, you will be surrounded by courteous adults that “respect the dignity, individuality, and rights of
self and others.” You will be expected to demonstrate this same adult maturity in your attitude. Scholars contend that
attitude is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to what happens. We will help you accept responsibility for
your attitude and choose it deliberately and wisely. Four aspects of your attitude will be emphasized as a Titan.
Courtesy: A hallmark of Dominion High School is the common courtesy that is displayed among all members of our
community. You should consistently greet fellow Titans with a kind word, hold the door for someone else, allow others to
pass in the hallway before you, and offer to assist others who may be in need.
Respect: Each and every member of our school community should enjoy mutual respect with you. Although we may have
different opinions, speak a different language, or celebrate different holidays, we are all Titans. As a Dominion High School
student, you represent yourself, your family, your school, and your community. We want to be proud of one another at all
times. Our mutual respect will be strongly evidenced during the school day, when we attend school events, when we visit
other schools, and when we meet in the community.
Responsibility: Perhaps the most important attitude that you can display is one of responsibility. While there will be times
when we may fail in our quest to be courteous and respectful, it is imperative that we accept responsibility for our actions at
all times. The demonstration of a responsible attitude is a choice, a choice to admit when we are wrong, apologize when we
have hurt others, and pledge to display courtesy and respect for self and others in the future.
Dress Code: The way you choose to dress and groom yourself strongly communicates your attitude. In order to promote the
display of a courteous, respectful, and responsible attitude, our community has agreed to the following expectations
regarding student dress. Appropriate exceptions to the dress code may be made on the basis of medical or religious reasons.
Please see the principal directly if you wish to request a special exception.
Hats, scarves, bandanas, athletic headbands, or other headgear are prohibited from 9 AM to 3:48 PM. These items must
be stored in a locker or backpack and are not to be visible during the school day. Headbands specifically designed
to hold long hair in place are acceptable. Bandanas may not be worn as an accessory at any time of day.
No bare midriff.
No chains or spiked jewelry.

Actions When you enter Dominion High School, our staff will assume that you are capable and willing to act as a responsible young
adult. Consequently, you will not find an extensive list of rules at Dominion High. The Titan Ten will represent the core set
of expectations for you, your teachers, your family, and your community. During the opening days of school, your teachers
will help explain the specific implications of The Titan Ten to you and your classmates.
Assuming that you will consistently live up to these expectations, you will enjoy certain privileges as a Titan. As you are
officially promoted to the next grade level, these privileges and responsibilities will gradually increase.
Freshmen: Juniors: Seniors:
* Sit anywhere in the cafeteria during lunch * Passes not required to leave class * Courtyard for lunch
* May drive to school * Passes not required to
Sophomores: * Sit anywhere in the cafeteria during lunch leave class
* Passes not required to leave class * May drive to school
* Sit anywhere in the cafeteria during lunch * Premium parking
* Senior trip in June
Should you have any difficulty meeting the expectations that are expressed in The Titan Ten, adults within the building will
help you to understand these commitments and modify your behavior as necessary. These strategies will be implemented as
frequently as necessary to help you find behavioral success at Dominion High School.
Senior Opt-Out of Titan Time: At the end of the first quarter of the senior year, students may opt out of Titan Time if they
have met specific criteria. Some of these criteria must be met at the conclusion of the junior year:
Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher
All SOL tests required for graduation have been passed
No more than eight absences during the junior year
No violations of the Honor Code during the junior year
No assignments to Saturday School, In-School Restriction, or Out of School Suspensions during the junior year
Additional criteria must be met during the first quarter of the senior year to be eligible for early release in lieu of Titan Time
at the conclusion of the first quarter:
All first quarter grades are at least a B-
No more than two absences from school during the first quarter
No violations of the Honor Code during the first quarter
No assignments to Saturday School, In-School Restriction, or Out of School Suspension during the first quarter
Pay senior dues
During the second semester of senior year, students may also opt-out of Titan Time. In order to earn this exemption, a
senior must exhibit excellent achievement, attendance, citizenship, must have paid their senior dues, and must have
developed a post-secondary plan. Excellence in achievement is defined as having earned C’s or better in all classes during
the first semester and having earned all verified credits necessary for graduation. For purposes of this exemption, excellence
in attendance is defined as four or fewer absences during a semester. Good citizenship implies that a student must not
violate the Honor Code or any school policy which results in assignments to Saturday School, In-School Restriction, or
suspension from school. This privilege is subject to revocation if grades drop below C level, the student is absent from
school in excess of four days during the second semester, or for any violation of the citizenship expectations.
Detention: At Dominion High School detention will commonly be referred to as a “clinic” in order to emphasize the
instructional nature of this strategy. If your behavior indicates that we have been unsuccessful in communicating our
expectations to you, we will schedule a “clinic” with you for the purpose of re-teaching them so that you can be successful
in the future. Clinics will be held at the discretion of school staff, most typically before or after school or during lunch.
13
Unlike traditional detention, clinics involve re-teaching of expectations, lasting only as long as necessary for you to
demonstrate understanding.
Loss of Privileges: If you exhibit consistent difficulty demonstrating responsible behavior, the privileges listed above may
be removed until you demonstrate mastery of these expectations.
Suspension of Bus Privileges: If you do not meet expectations on a school bus, you may be denied the privilege of riding
the bus.
Work Assignment: At times you may be offered the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of your teacher’s
expectations by participating in a non-hazardous work assignment.
Saturday School: You will likely be assigned to attend one or more sessions of Saturday School if you have an unexcused
absence from class or school. Saturday School is held approximately twice a month. You must arrive promptly by 9:00 AM
and must remain until 12:00 noon. In addition to completing work for your classes, you will participate in a community
service project during each session.
In-School Restriction: You may be assigned to In-School Restriction (ISR) for significant or repeated violations of the
expectations expressed in The Titan Ten. In order to successfully complete the In-School Restriction experience, you must
be able to articulate a plan of action for correcting the behavior that led you to ISR. If you are assigned to ISR, you must
arrive in the ISR room by 9:00 AM with all of your textbooks and work materials and must remain in class until 3:48 PM,
even if you have early release. You may not participate in any extra-curricular activity on a day that you have attended ISR.
Suspension from School: If you commit an act that interferes with the education of others, prevents the orderly operation of
the school, or threatens any individual’s well-being, you may be suspended from school by the principal or assistant
principal. Such suspension shall not exceed ten days, unless the principal has made a recommendation to the Division
Superintendent for further action.
During a suspension from school, you will not be permitted on the premises of any Loudoun County public school. Before
you return to school, you may be expected to attend a successful reinstatement conference with your parent or guardian and
an administrator.
If you are suspended from school, you will be provided with an opportunity to make up any and all work that is missed
during the suspension days. You must take initiative to obtain these assignments and complete them in a timely manner.
Major Violations: As a member of our community of learners, there are a few school board policies that you must
understand and avoid violating at all costs. Violations of these policies will result in serious disciplinary consequences.
Alcohol: You shall not possess, distribute, use, or be under the influence of alcohol on any school property, at any school-
sponsored activity, or at any time while going to or returning from school. The term alcohol shall mean any intoxicating
beverage within the common understanding of that term which shall include any liquid containing any alcohol regardless of
the volume and is not limited to the definitions set forth in the Code of Virginia. A breath analysis test is authorized to
determine whether or not a student is under the influence of alcohol.
If you violate this policy, you will be suspended from school for ten days and must participate in the Substance Abuse
Education Program as required by School Board Regulation §8-35. Additionally, if you violate this policy, you will be
required to undergo evaluation for drug and alcohol use, or both, by an appropriately licensed professional with expertise in
substance abuse treatment. If recommended by the evaluator, and with the consent of your parent or guardian, you may be
required to participate in a treatment program.
14
Drugs and Other Chemical Substances: You are strictly prohibited from possessing, distributing, using, or being under the
influence of any drug, any chemical substance that affects the brain or nervous system, or any substance represented to be or
believed to be a drug or chemical substance that affects the brain or nervous system or from possession of any drug-related
paraphernalia while under school authority or on school property. Possession or distribution of counterfeit or “look-alike”
drugs is also strictly prohibited and will be dealt with in the same way as possession or distribution of any other drug.
If you violate drug policies, you will be subject to disciplinary action, which may include assignment to the Substance
Abuse Education Program as required by School Board Regulation §8-36; long-term suspension from school; referral to the
School Board for expulsion; or such other action as may be deemed appropriate by the superintendent or the school board.
All violations of state law will also be reported to the police. If you are required to attend the Substance Abuse Education
program, you shall be required to undergo evaluation for drug or alcohol use by an appropriately licensed professional with
expertise in substance abuse treatment. If recommended by the evaluator, and with the consent of your parent or guardian,
you may be required to participate in a treatment program.
If you bring a controlled substance, an imitation controlled substance, or marijuana onto school property or to a school-
sponsored activity or possess one or more of these items while under school authority you shall be subject to expulsion from
school in accordance with School Board Policy §8-28.
Publications or other printed matter which advocate the use of illegal drugs, the abuse of legal drugs, or other chemical
substances, which portray such use or abuse as socially acceptable behavior, or which advertise the sale of counterfeit drugs
or drug-related paraphernalia are prohibited from sale or distribution on school property. If you sell or distribute such matter
on school property, you shall be subject to school discipline.
Fighting: Fighting creates a serious danger to the students involved, to other students, and to school personnel. Fighting
while under school authority cannot be tolerated and disciplinary action will be taken against you if you engage in or
instigate fighting.
Tobacco Use: You shall not possess, smoke, or use tobacco products at school, on a school bus, while going to or returning
from school, on school field trips, or at any school related activity. Violations of the tobacco policy will result in assignment
to In-School Restriction or suspension from school.
Weapons: You shall not possess any weapon for any reason while under school control or supervision. The term weapon is
construed broadly to cover and include any instrument that could injure, harm or endanger the physical well being of another
person.
If you are in violation of this policy, you shall have any such weapon confiscated by school officials and/or any police
official. The school official may return the weapon only to your parent or guardian after a conference with such parent or
guardian.
If you violate School Board Policy §8-32, you shall be subject to expulsion, or to such lesser disciplinary action, including
long-term suspension, as may be deemed appropriate. If you use or threaten to use a weapon against another person, or you
display or brandish an artificial or toy weapon in such a fashion so as to threaten or induce fear in another person, you may
be referred to the School Board for expulsion.
The accidental or inadvertent possession of a weapon shall not constitute a violation of this policy if the student accidentally
or inadvertently brought the weapon onto school property or to a school-sponsored activity, provided the student
immediately reports the same to a teacher or administrator upon discovery thereof by such student and before it is
discovered or seen by a teacher, administrator or other school employee or by another student.

Student Services
Buses: The opportunity to ride a bus to and from school is a privilege that is granted to responsible school citizens who live
beyond a reasonable walking distance from the high school. Your opportunity to ride the bus will be jeopardized if you
exhibit inappropriate or unsafe conduct on the bus, at the bus stop, or while walking to or from the bus stop from your home.
If you ride to school on a bus in the morning, you must return home on the same bus in the afternoon unless you have
secured a bus pass from the main office. A special pass will be granted if you present a written note from your parent or
guardian to a main office secretary before 9:00 AM.
Cafeteria: You will have approximately 30 minutes for lunch each day that school is in session. Unless you are under the
direct supervision of a staff member, you are expected to be in the cafeteria during your lunch shift. Passes are
required to leave café. You may not loiter, wander, or eat in the hallway during your lunch shift. Seniors in good
standing may sit in the senior court during lunch.
You will be expected to demonstrate leadership, courtesy, respect, and service while in the cafeteria. Courtesy should be
shown toward all members of the staff, individuals who may be visiting the cafeteria, and fellow students. Please respect
the cafeteria as if it were the dining area in your home, cleaning up very carefully after yourself. Service and leadership will
be required to identify individuals in the cafeteria who need assistance understanding our collective expectations or
developing a sense of belonging in our Truly Titan community.
School Counseling: “Connect-Inspire-Succeed”
The counseling staff provides services in assisting students in their emotional, intellectual, and social growth. We believe the
entire high school experience is an educational opportunity for students to seek and find growth and maturity. We provide
students with assistance in making life, academic, and college/career decisions. The counselors at Dominion view all types
of advising as a developmental and on-going process rather than a single, disconnected, decision-making event. For our
counseling program to be successful in contributing to our community of learners at Dominion High School, we must work
collaboratively with students and their families. All services are provided in a non-judgmental and confidential environment.
Library/Media Center: The media center is open from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM, except on Mondays, when it will close at
4:30 PM and Fridays when it will close at 4:00 PM. You must obtain a pass from the library staff in advance if you wish to
visit the media center during your lunch shift or Titan Time. In addition to current printed resources such as books, reference
materials, periodicals, and newspapers, you will have access to several online resources and other audio-visual materials
including DVDs. Easy access to the Loudoun Public Library online catalog will help you search and retrieve needed
materials if resources are not readily available at the school media center. Computers equipped with high-speed access to the
Internet, a photocopier, microform reader/printers, and other multimedia presentation projectors are also available for your
use. If you need any assistance, please ask the librarian or assistant for help.
Lockers: You will be issued a locker for storing books and belongings. You may also be assigned a locker in the locker
room for use in physical education or as a member of an athletic team. These lockers remain school property and may be
searched by the administration if deemed appropriate. The school cannot be responsible for items lost or stolen from a
locker. You should never give out your combination to other students. You should not share these lockers with any other
student. You are discouraged from bringing valuables from home. Please make sure that your hall locker closes tightly when
you are finished and be sure that your gym or athletic locker is secured before leaving the locker room area. Backpacks may
not be taken to the physical education locker room and must be placed in hallway lockers before reporting to the gymnasium
for physical education.
Nurse’s Office: If you experience any medical needs as a Titan, you may visit the nurse’s office, which is adjacent to the
main office. The nurse’s office is routinely open from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Except in the event of an emergency, if you need
to see the nurse, you must have a pass from your teacher, and you will be asked to sign in and out of the nurse’s
office. If you are ill, you must see the nurse first before leaving school. As a matter of routine, the nurse will contact your
16
parent or guardian before sending you home even if you are 18 years of age or older. Questions about procedures and
expectations should be directed to the nurse.
All student medications (prescription and over the counter) must be brought to the nurse’s office by a parent or guardian and
will be administered in the office by the nurse or designee. As a student, you may not be in possession of any medication
while in school or on your way to or from school. Consequently, we request that, when possible, you take any necessary
medication at home. When this is not possible, your parent or guardian must bring any medication to the nurse’s office for
you. All medication must be brought to school in the original container with appropriate label intact. A medication
administration form, which can be picked up in the office or downloaded from the school website, must be completed and
signed by a physician and parent/guardian for prescription medications. For over the counter medications to be given at
school, the form must be filled out and signed by the parent/guardian. This form must accompany any medications that are
to be given at school.
Parking: Permission to drive to Dominion High School and park in the school lot is a privilege reserved for juniors and
seniors in good standing. Your attendance, achievement, and personal conduct are the factors to be considered in granting
this privilege to you. If you are given this privilege, you must purchase a parking permit through the safety and security
office for $200. You must properly display the permit when parking in the school lot. Once you have arrived at school, you
may not return to your car until the end of the school day without permission from an administrator and your teacher.
Inappropriate driving practices, parking in an undesignated space or a failure to maintain satisfactory habits of attendance,
achievement, or conduct will result in suspension of your driving and parking privileges.
School Store: Located in room 301, the store is open daily until 8:55 am so that you may purchase school supplies and Titan
spirit items.
Telephones: You are encouraged to take care of personal business outside of school hours. If you need to make an
emergency phone call during the school day, please go to the main office during your lunch shift and obtain permission to
use the telephone from the staff.
