Conference Programme

*Research posters on WSH projects will be displayed at the Conference.Programme is accurate as of 30 March 2016.

Singapore will face three key challenges in workplace safety and health if we don’t act today. We have a rapidly aging workforce; an increased incidence of chronic diseases; and an emergence of new health threats (e.g., hazards arising from the introduction of new technologies, musculoskeletal disorder from the frequent use of mobile phones and tablets, etc).

Diminished health and injury, whether caused by work or not, reduces quality of life, work output and income. There is an urgent need for businesses to be better prepared to manage these challenges. On 24-25 Aug 2016, world-renowned experts and business leaders in workplace safety and health will gather in Singapore to share their knowledge and insights on how businesses can overcome these challenges. Sign up for The Singapore WSH Conference 2016 to find out how you can transform these challenges into opportunities.

Individual adaptation to changes at workRapid changes in technology, demography and attitudes are impacting the workplace in significant ways. One consequence is that Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) efforts can no longer be just a reactive response that provides incremental awareness in WSH issues at work. But how can we develop mindsets and behaviours that will constitute a strong and effective workplace climate for safety and health? This presentation explains how findings from the behavioural sciences can help us understand individual adaptation to changes and thereby better understand, predict and influence attitudes, behaviours and outcomes related to WSH issues.

Ms Shelley FrostExecutive Director Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)

The value of OSH in a sustainable businessEvery business needs to protect its reputation, build its resilience and still ensure it delivers results for its shareholders and investors. There is substantial evidence that organisations with effective health and safety programmes are better managed and more successful.

One vital factor to ensuring an effective health and safety programme is a competent workforce. In this presentation, Ms Frost will share how by measuring and developing OSH competency and taking a leadership position in valuing the workforce, businesses can underpin their reputations, improve resilience right down through their supply chains and drive the kinds of results that identify them as sustainable businesses.

Mr Andrew SmithHead of Communication and PromotionEuropean Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA)Bilbao, Spain

“United in diversity” — How do the European Union’s WSH communicationsmeasure up?The European Union’s (EU) substantial body of workplace safety and health (WSH) legislation is rightly considered a shining example of its motto “United in diversity”. But, as demographic change makes Europe’s workplaces increasingly diverse, the need to find effective ways to communicate WSH messages to employers, workers and policymakers has never been greater. By drawing on the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work’s experience in campaigning, communicating and networking, this presentation will explore how the EU communicates WSH messages to a diverse population.

Mr Ong Kim PongRegional Chief Executive OfficerSouth East AsiaPSA International

Communicating WSH in a diverse workplace — The PSA experienceAs one of the leading global port groups with container terminals in 16 countries across Asia, Europe and the Americas, PSA believes that it requires an inclusive community of internal and external stakeholders to take collective ownership of WSH across PSA’s diverse workplaces.

In his presentation, Mr Ong will share PSA’s experiences in communicating WSH messages and its good practices to build a strong system and culture for sustainable WSH performance cross-culturally.
