WhatistheDepotDonorMilkBankSouthWest?

HealthyBabiesUKhavesetupaDepotDonorMilkBankinTivertonsothatSouthWestparentshavethesameoptionsandaccesstodonormilkastherestofthecountry.HBUKhavenegotiatedapartnershiptoactasaDepotCentresomilkcanbestoredonsiteenablingthefreewheelers/NICUbloodbikestodeliverandcollectmilk;somethingwhichiscurrentlynotfeasibletothemajorhospitalsintheSouthWest.HealthyBabiesUKisanestablishedbasewithahomefromhomeenvironmentwheremotherswishingtodonatecanbewelcomed.Thehousewillalsobeafocalpointforthefreewheelers/bloodbikes/ambulancedriverstobeabletomeetandthentakedonatedmilkontoBristoltobepasteurised.WhyisthereaneedforaDepotDonorMilkBank?Donorbreastmilkisusedforpre-termandneonatalunits.Humanmilkisacomplex,livingfluidthatismorethansimplynutrition.Ithasspecifichealthpromotingcomponentsthathavebeenproventoenhanceinfanthealththatcannotbeprovidedbyinfantformula.Itisconsideredtobealivingfluidduetoitsant-bacterial,anti-viral,anti-parasiticfactorsaswellashormones,enzymes,specificgrowthfactorsandimmunologicalpropertiesHBUKcansupportBristoltoenablemoremilktobedonatedandmorebabiestohaveaccesstodonormilk.Researchhasdemonstratedthatfeedingsickorprematurebabiesbreastmilkreducestheriskofinfectionandotherproblemsduetoitsspecialanti-infectiveproperties;thisincreasestheirchanceofsurvivalandhelpstheirlong-termdevelopment.Unfortunately,maternalbreastmilkisnotalwaysavailableduetoinsufficientsupply,illnessoramother’sgeographicalseparationfromherbaby.Weunderstandhavinganewbabyisabusytimebutifyoucandonate,itisverymuchappreciated,youwillbeofferedsupportandadviceduringthisperiod.

Whocandonatebreastmilk?

• Motherswhohaveestablishedbreastfeedingwiththeirownbabyandfindtheyhavemilksurplustotheirbaby’srequirements.

• Tobeabletodonatethereisanexpectationthatyourbabyisexclusivelybreastfeed• Enrolmentisideallybeforeyourbabyisfourmonthsold.• Youcancontinuetodonateuntilyourbabyissixmonthsold.

Theselfassessmentquestionnaireprovidesfurtherinformation.HowmuchbreastmilkwillIbeexpectedtoproduce?Sickorprematurebabiesbenefitfromeventhesmallestquantitiesofbreastmilk.Eachmotherproducesdifferentamountsatdifferenttimes.Youwillfindtheamountyouexpresswillvaryfromdaytoday.Mothersareaskedtodonateifpossibleaminimumof20x100mlbottles.Imageofadonormilkbottle

Yourinformationiskeptconfidentialatalltimesandwillnotbesharedwithanyonewithoutyourpriorconsent.Duetoconfidentiality,weareunabletodisclosewhichbabiesyouarehelpingbydonatingyourbreastmilk.

Youwillbeprovidedwiththefollowing:

• Leaflets;donors’doitsafely,medicationanddonatingbreastmilk,cleaning/storageofequipment,bloodtestforbreastmilkdonors

• Sterilebottles,labelsandinstructions• Freezerthermometer(ifrequired),andtemperaturerecordsheets.

WewillcontactyoutoarrangeafacetofacemeetingatHBUK,HoneysuckleHouse.Wewill:

• Completeahealthquestionnaire• Answeranyquestions• Provideyouwithalltheequipmentabove• Takeasmallsampleofyourblood.• Wewouldlovetomeetyourbabyatthistimetoo.

Ifyoudonothaveaccesstoabreastpump,pleasetalktouswhenarrangingyourhealthmeetingandwewilldiscussthis.Wewouldliketoencourageyoutoexpressyourmilkbyhandifyouarehappytodothis.However,ifyoufinditeasiertouseapumpthenpleasedoso.

Providingbreastmilkforyourownbabyisprioritysoifyouareexclusivelybreastfeedingandyourbabyisundersixmonthsthemilkyoudonatetouswillbeexcess.

Howtoexpressandstoreyourbreastmilksafely

CleaningofequipmentSeparateallexpressionkitpartspriortocleaning.Equipmentshouldbecleanedusinghotsoapywaterandrinsedinclearwater.Priortotouchingequipment,washyourhandsthoroughly.ThefollowingpictureshowstherecommendedNHSstandardhandwashingtechnique.

PersonalhygieneCareneedstobetakentoensureyourbreastsarecleanpriortoexpression.AshowerdailyisrecommendedWearawellfittingsupportingbrawhichshouldbechangedregularlyChangebreastpadsfrequentlyExpressingyourbreastmilkTopupbreastmilkbottlesduringthedayifunabletoexpressafullbottleeachtime–thiswilluselessbottleandstoragespace.Bottlesmustbefrozenwithin24hours.Whilststoringinthefridge,pleasekeepinthemainbodyofthefridgeandawayfromotherfoods.Anymilkcollectedfordonationoncefrozenshouldbekeptfrozen.LabellingyourbreastmilkYouwillbeprovidedwithlabelsforeachbottle.Afterexpression,completeoneofthesewithyourname,thedateyouexpressedthemilk,yourdateofbirthandstickthelabeltothebottle.Pleasenote:Inordertoavoidcontaminatingthebreastmilkwhentoppingup,pleasefollowtherecommendedhandwashingtechniqueasshownonpreviouspagebeforeopeningbottles.Storage

DonorbreastmilkcanonlybeacceptedbytheDepotMilkBankinthesterilebottlesprovided.IfyouarerunninglowinformHBUKMilkBankimmediatelyandtheywillsendyoumore.

Yourbreastmilkcanbestoredinadomesticfreezerforupto3months.Thetemperatureofyourfreezermustbemaintainedatminus-18degreesorlowertoensurethemilkisstoredinthebestpossibleconditions.

Ifyourfreezerdoesnothaveadigitaltemperaturedisplay,HBUKDepotMilkBankcanprovideyouwithathermometer.Youwillbeaskedtorecordthetemperatureofyourfreezerusing“donors’doitsafely”form.Thisformisthentobereturnedwiththemilk.

Ihavebottlesreadyforthemilkbank,whathappensnext?

ContactHBUKDepotMilkBanktoarrangeasuitabletimeforyouoryourrepresentativetodeliveryourbreastmilk.Itmaybepossibleforhomecollectionbyavolunteerdriveroncertaindates.Thisisbasedonindividualcircumstances,eg,distancefromHBUKDepotMilkBankandwillbediscussedwithyouwhenyoucontactHBUK.

TheHBUKDepotMilkBankstaffwillcontactyouwithin10-14daystoseehowyouareprogressingandifyourequireanymorebottles.However,pleasedocontactHealthyBabiesUKDepotMilkBankbeforethisifyouhaveanyquestionsorconcerns.Ifstaffareunavailablepleaseleaveamessageontheanswermachineandyouwillbecontactedassoonaspossible.Alternativelycallthemobilenumberifasoonerresponseisrequired.
