From the Principal’s Desk

Greetings All,

I hope you are managing to stay warm given the cold weather that is upon us!! Winter is here, no doubt about that. I

encourage all children to remember to put on their warm jackets when outside playing, as the classrooms are very

warm and the contrast in the temperature outside is apparent though the children may not realise this.

I am hoping that you enjoyed the International Children’s Day assembly as much as we, the staff, did. The children

looked amazing in their national costume as they paraded around. Each class did some lovely activities around

International Children’s Day as information was shared and celebrated around the different cultures. Thank you to

everyone for putting in an enormous effort.

Manningham Civic Awards

On Wednesday the 23rd of May, I attended the inaugural Manningham Civics Awards Gala evening with 11 of our 13 Kids

Hope Mentors. The mentors were nominated for the Community Civic Award as a way to publically recognise their

contribution as volunteers in our school. I am most proud to announce that the Mentors were awarded a “Highly

Commended” award given by the Mayor and accepted by Helen Bottomly on behalf of all of the mentors. Well done to

you all and sincere thanks for the contribution you make each week to the lives of children at Doncaster Primary School.

One child, one hour, once a week!!

The following is what is on the Manningham Council Website.

Community Achievement Highly Commended: Kids Hope Mentors

The Kids Hope Mentors are a team of volunteers who mentor kids that are at risk or in need at Doncaster Primary

School. They build long term relationships with the children to enrich their lives. The mentors stay with the one child that

they have been matched with until the child graduates from primary school. These mentors are the most caring, humble

people. They help build a child’s self-esteem, confidence and make the children feel worthy and valued.

Regional Professional Learning

It is with great pleasure that I share the news that our school is hosting some regional Professional Learning sessions for

teachers. The two sessions planned are focused on Literacy and Numeracy.

As the host school, we are able to send some of our teachers along to share with others from schools within our region.

The session are looking at measurement-based assessment, teacher judgement-based assessment and assessment

schedules. This opportunity provides a platform for professional dialogue between teachers and gives us the chance to

see how our work stacks up against best practice. We will be sure to share the outcomes of this fabulous opportunity via

the ‘Curriculum Corner’ in coming editions.

Enrolments for Prep 2019

A reminder to all parents of siblings who are intending to start Prep in 2019 at the school that enrolment forms are now due. We have held tours with dozens of families from outside the school who are all very keen for their children to study with us in 2019. In order to best plan and manage this process for everyone, we ask that sibling enrolments are now completed. Just drop into the office to grab a form and complete the required information.

Exciting News

Congratulations to Mrs Flatman on the birth of her baby girl, Evelyn Margaret. Evelyn was born on the 21st May and is

gorgeous. Everyone is doing well and we look forward to meeting Evelyn.

Student Led Conferences

Wednesday 27th June – Curriculum Day

This year instead of doing the traditional 10-minute Parent/Teacher interview, we are running 15 minute Student Led

Conferences. This exciting initiative is new to our school and places the child at the centre with them leading the

discussion about their learning. Larissa will have more details in the Curriculum Corner section of this newsletter. The

booking site for these conferences is the same as the past few years with details of this on the following pages of the

newsletter.

Changes to Attendance

From the end of Term 2, all Victorian government schools must be notified when a child is absent.

This requirement supports student safety and wellbeing. Schools need to know when and why your child is absent, and you as parents/carers need to know if your child is not at school.

Parents and carers must notify the school of their child’s absence as soon as possible on the day of absence using the school’s preferred method, Compass. An SMS will be distributed to parents after 10am each morning when their child is marked with an unexplained absence

or lateness. To avoid receiving these messages, enter any known absences into Compass before the day or on the

morning of an illness. If you believe you receive a message in error, please let Rebecca or Lisa in the office know while

we begin this system.

Have a great week ahead full of learning, fun and creativity.
