DEVELOPMENT HIGHLIGHTS 2016

• A generous lead gift from the Peter and Catherine Meldrum Foundation is making the vision for a new Innovations Lab a reality. Featuring state-of-the-art digitized equipment, this unique makerspace will offer an educational experience that will allow students to “design, build, prototype, experiment and observe.” Slated for completion in fall 2017, the lab will provide an unbroken focus on project-based learning by centralizing the necessary tools, development and execution.

• The late John C. Jackson grew up in Helper, Utah and completed a civil engineering degree in 1951. Following WWII, he relocated to San Francisco, where he worked in bridge design. John eventually owned three small companies, including a painting company that became very profitable by striping running tracks for competition. Mr. Jackson credited the University of Utah for his professional success and left his entire estate to the College of Engineering when he passed away. The John C. Jackson Endowed Scholarship Fund will provide for generations of future engineering leaders and innovators.

• Northrop Grumman is a leading global security company providing innovative systems, products and solutions to government and commercial customers worldwide, offering an extraordinary portfolio of capabilities and technologies for applications from undersea to outer space and into cyberspace. Through a generous grant, Northrop Grumman provided support for College of Engineering student groups and societies to enhance programs and contribute to activities. With their help, opportunities have been created for the development of student leaders to prepare them to serve businesses and communities in the future.

• Taking advantage of a special two for one match from his employer, Lance Cheney (BSEE ’98) and his wife Mandy used the opportunity to endow the memorial scholarship they created several years ago in honor of Mandy’s sister, Aubry Page, who was tragically killed in a car accident at age six. Even as a young child Aubry showed remarkable determination to achieve her goals. The Cheneys hope the recipients of these awards will remember that while learning may include frustrations and setbacks, persistence leads to success. Lance works in product development in the Sacramento California area, and currently directs about 80 engineers.
