OUR COMMUNITY GOAL

This year our school community will work together to create an environment where all students and staff members feel respected and safe.

Each month we will learn how to recognize different types of “mean spirited” behaviors and techniques to help you stop people who are mean to you or your peers.

TOGETHER WE WILL MAKE OUR SCHOOL A “MEAN FREE” ZONE.

WHO ARE BYSTANDERS?

Page 4: DON’T BE A BYSTANDER

NOW THAT YOU UNDERSTAND THE TERM “BYSTANDER” WE WANT YOU TO SHARE

WHAT YOU’RE THINKING? Hove you ever been a “bystander” when someone was saying or doing hurtful things to other people? How did you feel? (Think about this for a quiet minute)

Do you think bystanders wrong ? Explain your thinking to the person next to you. (Turn and talk for one minute)

Why do you think bystanders watch others say and do mean things? (Turn and talk with your neighbor about your thinking for one minute)

WHY DO BYSTANDERS JUST STAND

AROUND AND WATCH?Here are some possible reasons:

*The bully is someone other people look up to and want to hang out with.

*They want to "side" with the bully because to do that makes them feel strong. Siding with the bully's victim, on the other hand, would make them feel weak.

*They're entertained by the bullying.

*They don't think speaking up will help.

*They're afraid that if they say something, the bully will turn on them.

*Watching the bullying is a way to bully "vicariously." This means that they feel like they're getting their frustrations out by hurting someone even though they're not doing the hurting, just watching the hurting.

YOU CAN STOP BEING A BYSTANDER!Here are some things you can do if you see

someone getting bullied TELL THE BULLY TO STOP !

* Examples: "Cut it out!", "That's not funny!", "How'd you like it if someone did that to you?”* Let the bully know that what he or she is doing is stupid and mean.

WALK AWAY AND GET HELP!

*If you feel like you can't speak up, walk away from the situation and tell the nearest adult. Get them to come help.

*This is not snitching !

MAKE SURE THE KID WHO IS GETTING BULLIED TELLS AN ADULT! * Offer to go with him or her if it will help.

INVOLVE AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE! * Parents, teachers, school counselors, Mrs. Richters and Mrs. Youngberg.

DON’T BECOME A BYSTANDER…

Treat others the way you would like to be treated.

Stand up for someone when he or she needs it, and when you need it, someone will stand up for you!
