Dont Get Caught Off Guard Plays that challenge usplays that drive us nuts..plays that lead to great discussion Tim LaVan PIAA District X Rules Interpreter Plays that can catch us off guard Rules play Positioning play Anticipated the CALL, not the PLAY OMG, he/she just did WHAT?? Concentration play Play 1: Rules and OMG Over and back? Kaelen Riley CHS vs Coosa - YouTube SECTION 9 BACKCOURT ART A player shall not be the first to touch the ball after it has been in player and team control in the frontcourt, if he/she or a teammate last touched or was touched by the ball in the frontcourt before it went to the backcourt. ART While in player and team control in its backcourt, a player shall not cause the ball to go from backcourt to frontcourt and return to backcourt, without the ball touching a player in the frontcourt, such that he/she or a teammate is the first to touch it in the backcourt. ART During a jump ball (ends when the ball touches a non-jumper, the floor, a backboard or a basket), throw-in (ends when legally touched by a player on the floor) or while on defense, a player may legally jump from his/her frontcourt, secure control of the ball with both feet off the floor and return to the floor with one or both feet in the backcourt. The player may make a normal landing and it makes no difference whether the first foot down is in the frontcourt or backcourt. Play 2: Positioning Foul? Trey Burke chase down block NCAA championship(Foul) - YouTube Positioning Crucial to making the correct call The element that helps us to get the call right Good position to SEE the play Be ahead or Be behind DONT get straight-lined Play 3: Positioning Block/Charge/No Call Positioning (again) Pre-game it If the play initiates from C, take it the whole way to the hole. Problem sometimes is the help defender is where the crash occurs Maybe a better train of thought is that the C has the dribbler and the primary defender, but a secondary defender MUST be officiated by L since there is no way the C could determine how/when the secondary defender got here (LGP or not). An even better argument might be that the L rotate to be there to make the call and to actually have a look between the dribbler and defender. This philosophy is that the L must rotate even if there is an imminent drive coming from C. One more time, PRE-GAME IT! Play 4: Positioning? Rule? Really, that happened? Pass on the contact? https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzGmXGpWzLSHcEVFb1o2UU16VVk/edit ?usp=sharing In game scenario What happened? Two situations occurred on the play Passer got fouled Layup went in What happens if the foul is/is not called? Advantage/Disadvantage GET IT RIGHT (what is right here?)! Play 5: Positioning Block or Charge? Blarge video - YouTube Positioning (again, again) Pre-game it The crew MUST know first of all what is happening on a play initiating from C This play is the opposite of the last one in that there was a no-call in that play and a blarge in this play All crew members need to know how these types of plays will be handled Be aware of what your partner(s) are doing/calling As hard as it is, we need to try to hold our preliminary on block/charge calls to make sure we do not have a double whistle Play 6: OMG Rule Technical/No Call? Wild Finish in Charlotte-Richmond A10 First Round - YouTube NOTE: Contact after the ball has become dead is ignored unless it is ruled intentional or flagrant or is committed by or on an airborne shooter. Play 7: OMG Count it? Crew? This Is One Of The Craziest Buzzer-Beaters You Will Ever See Last second shots (ANYTHING can happen) Great game for 31:55 We MUST know the situation how much time who has last shot what is the foul situation what kind of play is expected (players may tell you if asked) IF we can, talk as a crew before in if game changer is possible BE OUR BEST THIS play is what will be remembered! The crew MUST agree ON THE FLOOR as to what happened GET IT RIGHT! Play 8: OMG, WHAT just happened? Let the kids decide it! https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzGmXGpWzLSHTkdRNmhDeVpOMFU/ed it?usp=sharing Hmmmmmm.isnt this another one like the last one? Half of the gym hates us and the other half loves us. Think this play will make headlines in the local paper tomorrow?! Questions? Tip of the Day Available at:
