The Paradoxes of Contemporary Workforce Development

This being a cautionary tale in nine brief chapters…

Page 5: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

PARADOX ONE

Page 6: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

We train for a world that no longer exists.

Page 7: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

PARADOX TWO

Page 8: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

We offer most of our training to those who spend the least amount of time with the people we serve.

Page 9: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

Paradox Three

Page 10: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

We use methods that are demonstrably unsuccessful.

Page 11: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

Paradox Four

Page 12: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

We train where willing crowds gather.

Page 13: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

Paradox Five

Page 14: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

We ignore the largest segment of the workforce: consumers and their families.

Page 15: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

Paradox Six

Page 16: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

We reward students for “doing time” in our educational institutions.

In fact, we seem to be guided by that sage Woody Allen…

Page 17: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

“Ninety percent of success is just showing up.”

– Woody Allen

Page 18: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

Paradox Seven

Page 19: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

Too often, especially with direct care staff, we hire them and then say:

Just do it!!

Page 20: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

Paradox Eight

Page 21: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

The best trained worker may not perform well in environments that are dysfunctional.

Page 22: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

Paradox Nine

Page 23: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

We haven’t thought systematically about personnel development and career ladders, especially for consumers.

Page 24: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

So, John…

What are we to do about all of this?

Page 25: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

Two obvious choices:

(1) Run away screaming…(a.k.a “The wise person’s option”)

(2) Try to fix it. (a.k.a. “The Fools’ errand”)

Page 26: Don’t Try This at Home: Building a National Strategic Plan for the Behavioral Health Workforce

The Annapolis Coalition

A confederacy of optimists…

We choose option two.
