A rain stormfailed to deter the many hundreds who gath-ered for the special occasion featuring aperformance by mariachis and testimonialson miracles associated with the BlessedMother, the Virgin of Guadalupe.

More than 500 parishioners of OurLady of Guadalupe Church in Doral gath-ered at Doral Charter High School forChristmas midnight mass on Dec. 24. Thiswas the first time since the church was cre-ated that parishioners could attend the cere-mony at their own mass venue.

The following week, the three kingsmade an appearance to participate in themass celebrating the Epiphany as a surprisefor the congregation. At Our Lady ofGuadalupe, there is always something newto bring the congregation closer to God andto one another. Doral Business Council (DBC) will kick off its Arts, Culture, and Entertainment Committee (ACE), while The InterContinental Hotel Doral Miami will initiate a series of art exhibitions beginning in January 2012. The idea is to help bring artists and related activities to Doral.

Currently, several DBC members have businesses or organizations related to arts, culture, and entertainment. Understanding the need to support the arts chair Frank Siberio and co-chair Cesar Murillo agreed to head up the ACE committee. The DBC kicked off the January Signature Breakfast with M. John Richard President and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center as the keynote speaker.

“To this end, the ACE committee will encourage the development of cultural opportunities and resources, as well as the creative, social and community benefi ts they provide”, said Mr. Murillo.

On January 13, The InterContinental at Doral Miami will hold an inaugural cocktail and will kick off the monthly exhibit series with Doral artist, Aguasanta Erminy’s paintings. Aguasanta was born in Caracas, Venezuela. All through her life she has had a strong passion for the arts. Aguasanta studied communications and art at the Universidad Catolica Andres Bello in Caracas and graduated with honors from the University of Miami with an Arts degree in fi lm. Aguasanta has exhibited her work worldwide with such organizations as the Florida Museum of Hispanic and Latin American Art, Batik International, Arteamericas, Art Basel and others.

InterContinental at Doral Miami shares with its guests that the most enriching and rewarding travel comes through authentic experiences. Working in partnership with

Fundacion Artistas Unidos, the hotel will be featuring a different artist each month, sharing all that is special about Doral and South Florida.

Each month, on the second Friday, the hotel will offer a kick off cocktail and will have the artist on hand. During the month, the artists will exhibit their work, so that residents, hotel guests, and the community at large can stop in to enjoy the various works of art at no cost.

A DBC member, the hotel is working closely with the newly created ACE committee through Mr. Murillo as well as with Fundacion Artistas Unidos, in order to implement this project.

“The idea for doing monthly exhibits is

to encourage cultural growth in the city and to ensure that art, culture and entertainment are central elements of the quality of life for our guests, the residents, and businesses of Doral”, said Jose Marti, General Manager of the InterContinental at Doral Miami.

At the end of the year Fundacion Artistas Unidos, together with the hotel and the DBC ACE committee, hope to create a coffee table book and hold an end of year exhibit featuring all of the visiting artists.

I am pleased to announce that the Doral Business Council has brought in Saylin Paez as our new Sales Representative. Saylin handles membership and sponsorship sales; so please share your leads with her. Many of you already know Saylin from her years as Superintendent of Recreation with the City of Doral’s Parks & Recreation Department. She has also been a sales representative for Shula’s Athletic Club in Miami Lakes and for Prestige Builders Group. Saylin began her career as a teacher for Miami-Dade Public Schools.

Saylin is representative of the direction we are taking the DBC. The DBC is a good organization with a solid foundation. I intend to make it a great organization. Great organizations find ways to reach beyond their current standing by redefining their goals, improving the customer/member experience, updating their business model, and making the changes necessary to grow.

We are building on existing strategic partnerships and developing new ones with various organizations throughout Miami-Dade County. The DBC already has a Memorandum of Understanding with The Beacon Council, Miami-Dade County’s official economic development partnership. I have met with Barbara Pimentel of the Florida Custom Brokers & Forwarders Association, Mark Trowbridge of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, and Barry Johnson of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. We are seeking opportunities to cross-promote events – sharing member rates and allowing respective members to attend events at member rates.

While these county-wide alliances are important, we must remain focused

Protect your data with B2B Cloud SolutionsBy Susan Smith

Most business startups do not last morethan a year or two let alone if you are inthe technology business. B2b Cloud So-lutions is a company that started in 1991doing just that. They were there beforeWindows, email and the internet. Theyhave survived multiple recessions, Year2000 and the dot com bubble. PartnersGerman Lopez and Frank Fernandezhave piloted the 20 year old company inchanging their business model threetimes over the company’s life with themost recent change 4 years ago to focuson cloud computing.

“There are inherent costs and risks ofowning your own IT equipment.” saysLopez. “Cloud computing reduces thosecosts and mitigates those risks. As an ex-ample, when you purchase a new fileserver for your business, you must spendthousands of dollars for hardware, software and professional services to mi-grate to the new server. You spend extra money to ensure you can grow withthe server in case you expand. Then you must pay even more thousands ofdollars over the life of that server to maintain and support it only to find that

after three or four years it is obsolete and youhave to spend money all over again.”

Imagine that instead of that model, you paya monthly fee to host your server in a securedata center and with that monthly fee younever have to worry about paying to upgradeyour server or IT equipment ever again. In thatsame monthly fee, you pay only for what youneed. You need a server for 10 employees, payonly for 10 employees. Need more disk space, make a phone call and you have more diskspace in 5 minutes. Also imagine you neverhave to pay for maintenance and support everagain. Many companies back up their dataeach night. What if your data was backed up

every 15 minutes? What a secure feeling you have that if you inadvertentlydelete or modify a document that you can recoverthat document or your entire server as of 20 min-utes ago.

Cloud computing removes the risk and highcost of computing and the companies that willmost benefit from this are the small businessesthat have between 5 to 100 users.

“We are pioneers in our industry. We havebeen doing this for years and now the technologyof Cloud computing has received enough expo-sure eventually the market has caught up to us.We offer our clients proof of concept. We willgo into the virtual environment, take a copy ofyour servers and put it in our cloud to see if youare comfortable. It is a try before you buy guarantee,” said Lopez.

For the best in cloud computing support technology that allows clients towork and collaborate from any desktop or laptop with full access anytimeand anywhere, explore the possibilities at b2b Cloud Solutions. Visitb2bcloudsolutions.com or contact 305-593-9934 for more information.

By Susan SmithFrom bringing in fresh pots of coffee, to relocating

a jet engine, to premier red carpet film screening setups and even delivery of apriceless human heart,Comet Delivery Services hasbeen moving precious mer-chandise for their clientssince 1977.

“We have done it all,” saidComet Delivery PresidentSteven Seltzer. “A cruise shipclient once had us meet oneof their vessels in Key Westbecause they ran out of coffeeand we were there with

plenty of back-up. At a recent DreamWorks animationmotion picture film screening we were hired to bringin the red carpet treatment---literally---and we han-dled set up before sunrise and break down at the endof the event. We just did a big job on magazine distri-butions for Art Basel.”

Seltzer started his business right out of college at atime when courier service was in great demand dueto original document requirements from lawyers andaccountants filed in the court system. As technologyadvanced and faxes and scanned emails became the

order of the day, Seltzer and his innovative teamrolled up their sleeves and expanded their business.

“Back in the day we were actually moving the orig-inal teletype machines for one of my accounts, ITTGlobal Communications. We saw the machines getsmaller and smaller as did the fax machines. Westarted expanding our warehouse and distributiondivision into what has become a sophisticated truck-ing division handling statewide, country wide andinternational delivery and service,” said Seltzer.

Local and national deliveries, warehousing and dis-tribution as well as same day, next day or pre-sched-uled deliveries are all part of the spectrum of servicesoffered at Comet Delivery, a recognized leader andinnovator of custom designed delivery schedules.

Comet’s one-stop shop does it all from warehous -ing to distribution. A Comet client now no longerneeds to pay for their own storage facility or fleet ofvehicles to deliver merchandise to their customers. The client inventory is stored at one of Comet’s ware-houses and when the order needs to be delivered acustomized delivery schedule is set up by their teamof professionals.

Seltzer explains the system as a win-win for every-one. “With your inventory in our warehouse you canfax, email or call us to speed your goods to your cus-tomers. Those savings can result in a huge increase in

your bottom line earnings while freeing up yourcapital. We do it all so you don’t have to.”

“We have a team of about a dozen folks in the officeand about 80 drivers on the road in cars, trucks ortractor trailers. We bend over backwards if necessaryto get the job done. Between our supportive staff andfriends in the industry there is nothing we cannot dofor our clients. Our repeat business and high percent-age of word of mouth referrals is testament to that.Whether it’s a trailer of goods or an envelope to bedelivered anywhere, we can get it done,” said Seltzer.

I am honored to havebeen asked to serve as acolumnist forCommunity Newspapersto share important andtopical informationabout South Floridacommunity associations.

My column will specifically addressbusiness issues related to condominium andhomeowner associations (HOA). Runningan association is a complicated and difficulttask, often thrust upon well-meaning resi-dents who have volunteered their time totake on the enormous responsibilities ofboard membership. I also believe that non-board member owners should understandthe issues involved because they may decideto run for the board of directors one day.

Perhaps the most critical issue facingcondos and HOA’s today is the delinquen-cy rate among members paying their asso-ciation maintenance fees, also known asassessments. Some people pay late, andsome owners do not pay at all. Since con-dos and HOA’s are known as a zero dollarbusiness (what they are budgeted to collectis the same as what they are budgeted tospend) it has caused either a reduction ofservices or even an increase in assessments. This unfairly affects the owners who havebeen responsibly paying fees and is a prob-lem that should not be taken lightly.

So what is a community association todo when an owner is paying late or does notpay at all? Usually, the first reaction is forthe association’s board of directors or man-agement company to send the file to anattorney. Now while that may seem to bethe best idea, and at some point in the life

of a delinquent unit it may be necessary, itdoes not have to start that way.

The first thing that a board of directorsneeds to do is to plan a meeting with onlyone item on the agenda: collections. In thismeeting, all options should be put on thetable and discussed. The goal of this meet-ing is to agree to follow the association’s“uniform collection policy,” or to establishsuch a policy if one does not exist. Thesingle most important paper in the room forthis meeting is the governing documents ofthe association. Highlighted sections dis-cuss how the bylaws address this issue.Every set of governing documents for allcommunities contemplate this issue andhave parameters by which boards can dealwith it. Such topics as when a payment islate, when it is past due, late interest, pastdue fees, and whether the association canfile a lien for unpaid maintenance fees areusually included in the governing docu-ments.

The second most important documentsare Florida State Statutes 718 (for condos)and 720 (for homeowner associations). Agood understanding of these statutes alongwith a proper reading of the associationsown governing documents will give aboard direction in formulating a just andproper uniform collection policy.

In my next column I will get down tothe specific issues and present some possi-ble policies that a condo or HOA mayadopt to improve association cash flow.

Tammy Farris, who had been dancingmost of her life, suffered a severe stroke inOctober 2011 that left the professionaldance instructor wheel chair-bound, unem-ployed, and minus insurance. The SouthFlorida Dance Showcase on Jan. 20 atBroward College is dedicated to help gether and other stroke victims back on theirfeet.

“My mother was told to get my things inorder because they did not think I wasgoing to make it,” Farris said. “I was foundhours after passing out and immediatelyrushed to the hospital for surgery. Theydrained the blood out of my brain and per-formed a tracheotomy to clear my lungs. Idon’t remember my first month in intensivecare.”

Farris experienced the classic strokesymptoms of numbness on her left side anddizziness prior to passing out and attributesthe stroke itself to high blood pressure andstress. In just a few months since theOctober stroke, she has regained partial useof her left arm and is attempting to learn towalk.

Like millions of Americans, Farris didnot have insurance at the time of the stroke. She was teaching at Dance Gallery in theSouth Miami area after giving up her ownstudio to enable her to teach fulltime.Dance Gallery has sponsored severalfundraisers on Farris’ behalf and they sell“Hope You Can Dance” bracelets for her,but more help is needed.

“I applied for Medicaid and finally didreceive it but they do not cover occupa-tional therapy so I started doing it on myown to continue to improve. I made somany calls to so many organizations butas soon as they found out I was a strokevictim they would say ‘oh, we don’t takestroke victims.’”

A branch of Medicaid called Medicaoffers limited occupational therapy which

apparently Farris already has used up andso she continues to make calls to find a wayto get help while doing what she can on herown — a risky gamble.

“I am living with my mom now and wehave modified the house so I can take ashower in the wheelchair but there are somany things you cannot do with only onearm. I can’t cook; I can’t fold laundry. Ihave fallen four times already and, thank

God, I have not split my head openbecause one time I landed on my face onthe ceramic tile. This is why so manystroke victims end up back in the hospi-tal,” Farris said.

A life of immobility to a lifelong dancerbrought up in the studio of her mother,Virginia Harris, is not a proposition Farrisis willing to accept.

“When something tragic and unexpected

happens in life you have to fight. I believeyou can achieve anything you desire if youwork hard enough and believe in yourself,”Farris said.

Apparently this is the style of leadershipshe taught her nearly 500 students duringthe course of her career thus far.

“Her students love her and want to domore for her,” said Rosemary Baker,Dance Gallery director. “She has been inthe dance community a long time and isvery well known. She really relates to thestudents.

“Tammy is able to get on their level andexplain things in a unique and effectiveway. If she is teaching ballet, for example, she makes it fun. Ballet is not fun for a lotof students but Tammy could make it funfor everybody.”

Many of Farris’ alumni have gone on todance for the Miami Heat, the MiamiDolphins, and performed on national andinternational stages such as on the televi-sion program So You Think You CanDance. Some have left travel engagementsto come back to town and teach masterclasses to benefit Farris. Recently a groupof students at Dance Gallery decided topost messages about the difference she hasmade in their lives.

“You are my motivation,” AlexisBrowning said.

“You not only inspired me to dance butalso to stay strong and always keep yourhead up,” Stephanie Pujol said.

“You are one of the best teachers I haveever had, not only an inspiration but also arole model,” Casey Ruiz said.

The First Annual South FloridaDance Showcase to Benefit StrokeVictims is Friday, Jan. 20, 7 p.m., inthe Omni Auditorium at BrowardCollege North Campus, 1000 CoconutCreek Blvd.

It is no coincidence that the NationalFootball League is experiencing one itshighest incidences of significant playerinjuries in the same year as its abbreviatedtraining camp/preseason. This circum-stance should alert athletes at all levelsabout the importance of preventive careand professional medical attention fordeveloping physical problems.

The lockout that kept players out ofcamp also kept them from receiving themedical attention and physical preparationthat generally precedes the stresses of theregular season. As a result, the number ofinjuries has soared with the most frequenttypes of damage involving feet, knees andlegs.

According to media reports, 11 playerssuffered Achilles tendon injuries in the pre-season alone. In the preseason and regularseason, a large number of athletes havebeen sidelined with aggravated hamstrings, torn ACLs, plantar fasciitis, and turf toe, among other disorders of the lower extrem-ities.

Some NFL players entered the presea-son with injuries that they had already sus-tained through exercise or in the course ofeveryday life. Others were hurt during

practice sessions or in training because theyovercompensated to make up for lost timeresulting from the lockout.

Regardless of the reason, these play-ers’ conditions worsened when exposed tothe rigors of practice and competition. Forsome, it meant being sidelined for the restof the competitive season. Others may befacing the end of their professional sportscareers.

Athletes at all levels should receiveregular medical checkups and should main-tain proper physical conditioning beforeand during their sports seasons. Althoughit is considered in some corners to bemacho to “play through pain,” persistentdiscomfort should prompt attention by anappropriate medical professional before itescalates.

It is virtually impossible to rule outinjuries in athletics – particularly in a high-contact sport like football. However, onecan minimize the chances of serious condi-tions and minimize their severity with anounce of caution.Jarett Reinhartz, C.Ped., is managingpartner of Advanced Footcare, Inc. ofMiami.
