Dorset Innovation Park Enterprise Zone
INTRODUCTION Dorset is alive with opportunities. It is home to a thriving and varied advanced engineering and manufacturing sector – including Aerospace, Defence, Energy, Composite and Marine technologies - which altogether employs around 17,300 people and contributes more than £800 million to the Dorset economy.
Over 200 foreign-owned businesses have chosen Dorset to set up part or all of their UK operations, and the county is above the national educational standard, making it an attractive place to do business and invest.
Dorset is also part of the South West Aerospace cluster of the UK, the largest in Europe.
Dorset Innovation Park is the second largest employment site in Dorset and already hosts two world leaders in defence technology – QinetiQ and ATLAS ELEKTRONIK UK. It is now set to become a major focus for the economic regeneration of South Dorset and a vital stimulus for employment. Our vision is to create an advanced engineering and manufacturing cluster for marine, defence, energy and cyber security businesses.
The site’s Enterprise Zone status provides businesses with attractive incentives to set up or expand including simplified planning, business rate reduction, and access to ultrafast broadband. Public ownership of the site also enables retained business rates to be reinvested. It is expected that £30 million will become available for further improving Dorset Innovation Park and local infrastructure over the next 25 years.
If you choose to set up your businesses at Dorset Innovation Park, you will be located in one of the UK’s most stunning locations. You will also have two major ports (Poole and Portland), an international airport (Bournemouth International Airport), mainline railway station and three world-leading universities on your doorstep.
As hosts of the site, Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is pleased to be able to present Dorset Innovation Park as open and ready for businesses.

BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY
The Design & Engineering Research Centre comprises a team of world-class academics and researchers who are contributing to the development of new knowledge, tools and technologies that positively impact on the environment and society around us.
The research centre applies its research to a wide range of fields under the umbrella of design and engineering but its current themes include:
CREATIVE DESIGN: Development of aesthetic design concepts, methods, strategies and tools (embodying colour, texture, shape and form) for any creative design field or industry.
DESIGN & ENGINEERING EDUCATION: The improved understanding of the teaching and learning of undergraduate and postgraduate designers and engineers.
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING: Development of innovative mechanisms, processes or systems.
MATERIALS SCIENCE & TESTING: Development of new materials as well as the enhancement and characterization of the properties of existing materials. This theme covers all classes of materials and studies their life cycle from mining, production, processing and finally the disposal and recycling.
NANOCORR, ENERGY & MODELLING: Design for durability through developing nano coatings for industrial applications (incorporating corrosion issues). This theme is a direct response to the EU initiative of generating 20% of our future energy needs through renewable sources by 2020.
TRIBOLOGY & DESIGN: The study of friction, wear, lubrication, and the science of interacting surfaces.
Dorset companies have links with a variety of universities and colleges outside of the county, due to the central location and easy travel to others in the South West. These range from the Southampton and Portsmouth Universities with their specialisms in marine and aquatics, to Bristol University with the composite and robotics centres.
