AEGON TEAM TENNIS
Andrew and Judith Sanger stood down from organising Aegon Team Tennis this year. Our thanks to them both for all they have done building up and running this league over the last few years. Diane Shields took over the role. It’s quite a challenging role but very rewarding seeing all the matches played. Our thanks to Diane for taking on this role and for doing such a great job. Our thanks also to the captains and players who make the league happen. Entries open for 2018 in December.

9U County Cup – 19th August
A big congratulations to the Dorset 9U County Cup team who managed to finish runners up in their Division/League.
The day started with a very early alarm clock, as all players needed to travel down to Taunton by 9.00am for a
team warm up/practise session.
The team, captained by Scott Holland, faced last year’s runners up Devon in their first match who were clearly up
for revenge after Dorset achieved one better than them in 2016. We ended up losing to them in a tough well fought
battle. After that we went on a phenomenal run and winning streak beating Somerset, Cornwall and the Channel
Islands to pick up the silver medals. All the team had a fantastic day, competed brilliantly and clearly had loads of
fun being involved in a team environment.
Summer County Cup – 24th to 28th July 2017
The men’s team had a gruelling week in West Worthing where they faced North of Scotland, Berkshire,
Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. Placings were very close and even though the team won 2
matches and had a better rubber count than 3rd and 4th place (only 1 rubber different with 2nd place), Dorset found
themselves coming 5th and relegated. A sad end to a very promising week for the team. A full report by Rich Irwin,
Captain can be found on the TennisDorset website : http://tennisdorset.org.uk/news/2570/
The ladies team, captained by Emma Bennett, were in Cheltenham and were up against teams from North of
Scotland, Gloucestershire, Bedfordshire and Hereford & Worcestershire. A tough week also for the ladies who came
5th and will also be relegated.
Both teams are now looking forward to Winter County Cup, 24th to 26th November.

Hart from Liverpool Victoria and John Feaver, Dorset LTA President. Thanks go to David Walrond for taking a week
out to referee the tournament and to all the volunteers.

Sherborne Tennis Club
Sunday, 9th July saw the opening of Sherborne Tennis Club’s new facilities by The Mayor of Sherborne, Councillor Jill Hogben.
The club, in close co-operation with Sherborne Town Council, the LTA and Sport England has undergone a major redevelopment of its facilities over the past 12 months and now boasts eight fully floodlit courts, four being artificial clay, two Mini Tennis courts with practice wall and a new clubhouse. As part of the re-development, Sherborne Tennis Club has taken over responsibility for the former town council courts which will be available to the public on a pay and play basis.
The redevelopment continues with plans to provide an indoor cover for one of the Mini Tennis courts so mini players can continue to enjoy playing whatever the weather.
Throughout the day, demonstrations were given of activities offered at the club plus a demonstration of wheelchair tennis by Taunton Wheelchair Tennis. The Mayor of Sherborne also presented trophies and medals to Sherborne Tennis Clubs’ mini and junior teams who competed in the Aegon Team Tennis League with the 10U Mixed and 14U Boys teams both winning their leagues.
Those not on court were able to enjoy sitting in the sun enjoying a barbeque, delicious homemade cakes, strawberries and cream……………….. a great day was had by all.

TRANSFORMING BRITISH TENNIS TOGETHER
Transforming British Tennis Together, a new £125 million funding scheme, is the largest and most
exciting capital investment programme the LTA has ever launched.
The scheme will work towards two ambitious goals :
To double the number of children playing tennis
To double the number of times infrequent adults play tennis
The LTA has committed to investing £125 million to improve community tennis facilities across
the country and plans to unlock a further £125 million through match funding from community
networks with a shared vision for growing the game.
Transforming British Tennis Together will see the LTA work in partnership with local communities
to :
Increase the number of covered and floodlit courts to boost available playing hours when
it’s raining and the sun has gone down;
Install online booking and entry systems so everyone can book a tennis court easily from
their mobile phone, computer or tablet;
Refurbish courts, clubhouses and other social spaces to ensure players have a great
experience every time they visit;
Support other innovative and creative ideas that meet local demand.
The LTA have organised events across the country to present details of this exciting investment.
One of these events is being held at The West Hants Club on Thursday, 12th October, 10.30 am to
12.30 pm, booking is on-line - https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/d/united-kingdom--

on Transforming British Tennis Together can also be found at www.lta.org.uk/tbtt.
A group of girls from Dorset enjoyed a great afternoon at David
Lloyd, Long Ashton in Bristol organised by She Rallies to
celebrate county tennis. The afternoon started with a Q&A
session with Judy Murray followed by a Touch Tennis
competition.
The vision of ‘She Rallies’ is to attract and retain more women
and girls in tennis. It falls into the LTA’s four year Women and
Girls Strategy, championed by Judy Murray, which aims to
significantly increase female participation in tennis across the
UK by developing a female workforce.
