The artist-designed DoSeum vehicle will feature built- in mini-museum displays for hands-on exploration, awnings for shade, and welcoming signage. At the DoSeum, kids and adults will explore rotating exhibits, borrow art for their homes, take a piece of art to keep, make their own art, and be part of neighborhood-based collaborative art projects. Teaching artists will work with children, families, and adults as the DoSeum stops at apartment complexes, schools, parks, and public events. When the DoSeum teams up with the public library’s Bookmobile, and others (including a food truck), we call it Fun Fleet. WHO WORKS ON IT? Drawing on its 10-year history of “bringing art to people and people to art” — that’s Big Car’s mission— Big Car executive director and lead artist Jim Walker will oversee the design and travel circuit for the vehicle. Big Car’s team of teaching artists will develop a DoSeum curriculum that involves fun, low-pressure activities such as collaborative collaging, chalk art, recording a song, designing neighborhood mascots or logos, or playing games that combine theater and sports. WHO DOES IT BENEFIT? The DoSeum will travel to apartment complexes, parks and schools in Big Car’s three neighborhoods—the Far Eastside, Near Southside and Lafayette Square. The DoSeum will also make appearances at high-profile arts events including First Fridays, Fiesta Indianapolis and other citywide arts and cultural fairs, reaching typical art lovers as well as the people that we will reach within neighborhoods. The DoSeum will be a highly-visible marketing tool in addition to making a real difference in the community. A few demographics about these neighborhoods: 43% Low Income (below $25,000) WHAT PROBLEM DOES IT SOLVE AND HOW WILL WE MEASURE ITS SUCCESS? The DoSeum has three goals: 1. Introduce the wonder of art and the fun of doing creative things into more people’s lives. Art and creativity make people feel happier and encourage problem solving. 2. Use art and creativity to address cultural disparities. 3. Connect people to the arts in Indianapolis to create new audiences and new lovers of art. We’ll measure the DoSeum’s impact on well-being and art access through head counts, and pre- and post- project attitude surveys, interviews, anecdotes and visual documentation shared via social media, e-blasts, and more. WHEN WILL IT TRAVEL? The DoSeum will operate in18-month cycles, starting with spring 2015 to fall 2016. In that cycle, it will make 120 stops, serving an anticipated 7,500 people. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Big Car received $30,000 from the Herbert Simon Family Foundation to purchase and partially outfit a vehicle. An additional $70,000 of contributed funding will help staff, equip, stock, and maintain it for one cycle. WHAT IS IT? The DoSeum is a mobile art vehicle, pop-up public space, and workshop for engaging art experiences. Once created, the DoSeum will enable art access for 10,000 people in neighborhoods lacking it and generate joy by its very presence, like an ice cream truck. The artist-designed DoSeum vehicle will feature built-in mini-museum displays for hands-on exploration, awnings for shade, and welcoming signage.

The DoSeum will be a highly-visible marketing tool in addition to making a real difference in the community.
