MODULES, MODELS & UTOPIES The artistic reflection I’ve been working on is about the processes of genesis and morphogenesis, the birth of life and forms. My work is therefore a reflection on life, which is kind of a constant work in progress, on which we inspire. I’m particularly interested in the relationship between the microcosm and the macrocosm and the role of the human being in this relationship. Another constant in my work is the notion of module, present in the repetitive structures. The word module comes from the Greek word for tone, and the Latin modulus, modus, that stands for cadence or measure. So the module is originally a conventional unit of measure to address the different proportions of a whole and to prevent any change or variation, the module is actually a standard model. Today the concept of module simply defines an element, a constituent unit of a set. Although it is difficult to know precisely the origin of this concept, which is not easy to conceive, its existence and permanence through the centuries in various forms, and especially its continued use that has been made of this concept, invite us to further study it thoroughly. I consider that we are talking about modules, when we speak of a parasite, a human being, a wall, a bubble, an egg, a brick or a word, which may constitute larger entities, as shown by Powers of Ten, a documentary film produced by the designers couple Charles and Ray Eames in 1977, offering a journey between the infinitely large and infinitely small. In this documentary it is put into perspective the concept of size in the universe, and to measure the place of man in the universe. Today, thanks to tools like Google Earth we have access to a view of the Earth's surface, moving away or approaching it, which has changed our perception and conception of ourselves. My artwork humbly seeks to be a tool or an alternative to allow to feed another areas of human knowledge, to help in somehow to observe or understand certain phenomena in other disciplines such as biology or medicine. The art and science have tried for centuries to imitate nature, to understand the inner structures and secrets of it, ultimately, to better mimic the mechanisms of renewal of its resources. I share the ambition of many artists to constantly address the question of utopia in art, a notion that is one of the major creative forces of all time. The artists have realized the power that emanates from the possibility of imagining a different world from what already exists. In addition to the inspiration that artists and scientists drawn from nature, which is an inexhaustible source of knowledge, we must emphasize the need to reaffirm the importance of art in understanding the sensible world. Art not only allows us to aspire to beauty, it also allows us to reflect our own condition as human beings.
