1.2_Context and main problem

Why North East England?

“ North East England has already proven its commitment to using design to create a more dynamic regional economy. Leading the way with a series of bold and innovative initiatives in business, technology and education, the region’s plans for long-term investment and thriving cultural programmes make it the ideal choice to host the very first national design promotion.”

David Kester, Chief Executive of the Design Council

1.3_Framework project: objectives

Theme Dott & Dott07 Objectives

Social Tangible improvements to the daily lives of NE citizens

Emphasis on the communities with the greatest need or disadvantage

Engagement through the design and development of new and inspiring public projects including services and innovative products

Improved role for consumers/citizens in the process of business/public sector innovation

Economic Highlight the business and industrial strengths of the NE

Encourage visitors, inward investment and regional promotion

Education

Provide an inspiring, involving and educational initiative with relevance to young people and public across the region

Raise informed knowledge and awareness of the value and importance of design to our national prosperity and wellbeing

Support growth and development of alliances between business and universities to connect business managers with world class design

1.4_Framework project: vision and strategy

Vision

StrategyLEADERSHIP - NOT JUST CONVERGENCE Dott can help North East make converging on sustainability a new trend.

ECONOMY OF THE PLACE Dott's design process draws attention to assets (places, people, history, biodiversity, food) and resources as new business opportunities that materially benefit local people.

MOBILISING HUMAN RESOURCESDott investigates existing natural, human and industrial resources with a special emphasis on making visible people who are engaged in valuable but sometimes invisible innovation.

NEW MODELS OF COLLABORATIONDott is not about telling people how to behave sustainably. The idea is to co-design, with them, more sustainable ways to organise daily life.

MEANINGFUL PUBLIC ENGAGEMENTThe Dott model is that when any of these small design steps succeed, even in part, other people and communities can quickly adapt them for their own situations and multiply them on a larger scale.

To explore what life in a sustainable region could be like and how design can help us to get there.

1.9.2_Framework project: assessment

Key Successes across the Dott07 programme

1. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT THROUGH DESIGN- Dott attracted over 20,000 visitors through its door during the festival period- Dott engaged with over 500,000people through the project

2. RAISING AWARENESS OF THE VALUE OF DESIGN- Dott encouraged the public to have a better understanding of the role and value of design

3. IMPROVING COMMUNITIES AND THE LIVES OF CITIZENS- Dott has served to improve communities and the lives of citizens in those community. Ex) Move Me : To help to improve the number of local people using buses and to develop innovative ways of improving access Ex) Eco-Design Challenge : To help schools to raise awareness of eco- sustainability and develop an eco-friendly brief

4. DEVELOPING LOCAL NETWORKS AND ALLIANCES- Dott has succeeded in developing local net works and alliance Ex) Eco Design Challenge, Move me, Urban Farming

5. Inspiring, Educating and Involving Young People- Dott has served to inspire and educate young people is most apparent in evaluation of the Eco Design Challenge and Move Me projects- Dott also brought about a change in behaviour through Involvement of the project

1.9.2_Framework project: assessment

1. REGIONAL PENETRATION & LEVELS OF PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT- The only Dott project to achieve a regional coverage was the Eco Design

challenge.

3. PROJECTS & PROJECT MANAGEMENT- There was some failure rate of events, projects and commissions.

4. MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS- This section had the most negative feedback from key stakeholders.- There was little creative thinking when looking at marketing and communications.

5. REGIONAL ECONOMIC IMPACT- The net economic impact on the Region was likely to be small as the programme.- The Dott could not build linkages between the current north east industrial economy and designing demand programme

Some failures and Lessons Learnt

2. CLARITY OF DOTT OBJECTIVES & MESSAGES- The overall theme of Dott clearly changed during the early part of the programme.

6. GOVERNANCE & MANAGEMENT- The Board would have benefited from more business sector involvement and also community involvement

1.9.2_Framework project: legacy

1) According to evaluation report, the legacy of Dott link back through the Cox review and Florida et al, to a wider narrative regarding the need for the UK Plc to become more innovative in order to meet future economic, social and environmental challenges.

2) This chart summarises an outline of Dott 07 legacy , areas of potential opportunity and plans to exploit these

2.1.4_Local project 1: Activities and results

#1. A set of personas #2. A light box visualisation of current dementia support services

#3. A signposting service prototyping

#4. A model of a safe wondering garden for a care home

#5. A volunteer mentoring service for carers

#6. Proposals for dementia cafes at high street locations

2.2_Local project 2

Low Carb Lane : How can we pay less for warmer homes?Wouldn’t it be great if…energy efficiency was the easy option?Energy

• An innovation and design project that helps residents in communities to adopt a more climate friendly lifestyle

• Government commitment (A energy reduction target of 60% by 2050)

2.2.1_local project 2: Context and main problem

Key challenges identified were:2)To contribute to climate change through energy-dependent activities such as heating or cooling our homes.3)Energy security and rising energy prices 4)Leading a lifestyle with low environmental impact is a great intention, but can low-income households afford it?

2.2.2_Local project 2: Objectives

The house was used as a community show-home and was used extensively throughout the course of the project as a way of engaging the local community and maintaining a good level of interest.

Objectives:2) Reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from our energy use at home3) Being accessible, desirable and affordable for all4) Creating user-friendly visualisations of energy use

2.2.3_Local project 2: Vision and strategy

Strategy : Co-discovering

• Asking residents in an average street in the North East what they really think about energy efficiency revealed that other social and financial problems are more pressing concerns.

• Ideas were gathered through Explores Club.

2.2.4_Local project 2: Activities and results

A blueprint for energy saving with an investment service called SaverBox and an energy reduction service called NESCO was developed by working with local people.

2.3_Local project 3

Our New School : How could schools be better designed?Wouldn’t it be great if… the whole community decided how its new school would be designed?

School

1) An Design project that help designers engage our staff, students, parents, governors and the wider community in looking at how co-design team develop learning at Walker.

2) Rebuilding and refurbishing 70billion pounds programmes called Building Schools for the Future (BSF)

2.3.1_local project 3: Context and main problem

Key challenges identified were:

Schools are often isolated from their community and don’t always provide a space that’s conductive to different sorts of learning and includes facilities for different groups

2.3.2_Local project 3: Objectives

Objectives:

3)Flexibility in our learning spaces and in our curriculum.4)An inspiring introduction to the world of work that develops employability and soft skills and a route to a career.5)A joined-up service with consistent and constant guidance.6)A support network and environment that provides a fulfilling experience for staff, students, employers and the community.

2.3.3_Local project 3: Vision and strategy

Strategy : Co-design

An in-school design laboratory was set up to help all members of the community that use Walker Technology College in Newcastle discover what they need from new buildings

2.3.4_Local project 3: Activities and results

1) A visual map of a school pupil's journey through their seven years at Walker and how they would like it to develop in the future

2) A colourful illustrated brief which the designers helped staff and students to write for architects tasked with building the new school.
