RL.1.1Ask and answer about key details in a text.

RF.1.3Phonics and Word Recognition

Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

In this lesson, students will read a short passage that is phonics based to practice their phonetic awareness while working on comprehension strategies.

Read the story three timeso First time you read and student tracks print with finger and listens

Discuss the main idea of the story (what is the story mostly about) (Day 1)o Second reading you read the passage with them

Discuss who the characters in the story are (Day 2)o Third reading the student reads the passage to you

Discuss the problem and solution/or cause and effect (Day 3) After reading the story three times, it is time to answer the questions (Day 4 and 5)

o Color the dot blue in front of the question after reading it and ensuring that the student understands what the question is asking them to find

o Have the student find the answer to the question in the reading passage and have them underline the sentence with the answer with blue crayon

o Have the student write the answer by restating the questions such as: What did the Hen eat for lunch? The Hen ate ______ for lunch. In this

way they are answering the question with a complete sentence and learning to use the evidence from the passage to back up their answer – this is an important skill that will serve them well as their reading level and expectations increase

Con’t the process answering the next question

Ex: Mag’s Bag

What is in the bag? Did you look in the bag? That bag is for Mag. Mag has a rag in the bag. It is a red rag in the bag. It is a rag for Mag’s bag.

Recommendations to extend the lesson:

Read the passage with the student and have them circle all the “ag” words Give the student one “ag” word and have them find another word that rhymes Have the student find and write three “ag” words Have the student find the “who” (noun) Have the student find the “what” (verb) Make a list of “ag” words together by replacing beginning consonants rag/tag

o Repeat recommendations for each word family passage
