Welcome to my farm! I’m Farmer Freddy, and I will be giving you a tour

of my place today! I hope you have fun and learn a lot. So, let’s go!

What did you eat this morning? Was it cereal, eggs, or maybe toast? Did you know all of those things started on a farm just like mine? You may know where these breakfast foods come from, but today you will be learning even more!

You may have noticed my donkey, Ginger, is in the same pen as my sheep. I keep her there because she is used for protection. You’re probably thinking, “A donkey? For Protection? Farmer Freddy is crazy…” However, this is very true.

Protection To make sure Ginger is doing her job right I have to keep her in the same pen as the sheep. Ginger eats the same food as the sheep. She relies mainly on sight and sound. She lets out a loud bellow when a predator approaches. Ginger will attack; she attacks by kicking with both hind feet. That solid blow can injure any predator!

Now this is my flock of sheep. They are just about ready to be sheared. Do you know what shearing is? After reading a few fun facts keep going to learn more!

Sheep have 4 chambers in their stomach

Adult female sheep are called “Ewes”

Adult male sheep are called “Rams”

Sheep have thick coats of wool. When the wool gets too heavy they need it cut, just like we get hair cuts. When they need sheared, a strong person comes to hold the sheep. They then take a razor and shear the wool. The sheep is left refreshed, and the wool is used by humans.

Shearing Tools

These are hand shearers. It takes a longer time for someone to shear an entire sheep with these. They aren’t used as often as they used to be.

This is the electronic shearer. These are similar to the razor we use on our hair. When I cut with these I get my sheep sheared very quickly.

This is the shearing stand. The sheep stand on here with their necks lying above the post. This makes it easier for the shearer when the sheep is standing straight.

Straw is stalks of wheat left over after it is collected or picked. I use straw all over my farm for bedding. The animals stay cleaner and warmer with straw!

All of the bread in the store starts in the field. Most bread is made from wheat. Wheat bread is really healthy too! Did you know bread is the one food that is eaten by all cultures? Uses of Corn

There are several uses for my corn. However, food for humans is not one of them. This is “field corn.” Don’t get them confused, because they are very different. Click on the links to the side.

My animals have to eat too. So, after I harvest the corn I save it. Then I have it cracked so my animals can easily eat it. Often the corn is saved in grain bins. Have you ever seen a grain bin? I use an auger to pump the corn into the grain bin.

Corn can be used to produce ethanol as well. Ethanol is a fuel that is environmentally friendly. It is used to power machinery. My tractor, however, does not run on this fuel. Several vehicles around you are powered by this though!
