FERRY TO TANGIER ISLANDCatch the ferry out of Onancock, an historic harbor town on the Chesapeake Bay, to a remote island dating to the 1600s, where residents still speak a British dialect. National Geographic Traveler listed Tangier Island as

one of the world’s top 20 places to visit in 2016. Tangier’s residents have been

isolated from the rest of the world

a way of life very different from modern America. Explore

ancient graves, a tiny museum, charming B&Bs, casual restaurants and one of the East Coast’s best

beaches. The Onancock to Tangier ferry operates in the

warmer months.

ONE, THREE AND FIVE DAY GETAWAYS

The Eastern Shore of Virginia is a history buff’s dream, settled in the early 1600s and relatively undisturbed since due to its centuries of isolation. It’s also a culinary mecca, where fresh-caught seafood meets southern comfort food, meets the latest in avant garde food trends. Plus, you can gaze across open water while you eat. If you’re an avid kayaker,

or just like the adrenaline high of a good hang glide, this is the place. If you love art, there are dozens of studios and galleries up and down the shore. Antique stores, charming shops and

can take home. Use these itineraries at our website, www.esvatourism.org, to help you plan the best trip ever to the Virginia Eastern Shore.

provided a wealth of vegetables and grains, making the Eastern Shore a great provider of food for Virginia and beyond. The shallow waters and

bay and the ocean are a convenient source of conveyance, a way of getting vegetables, grains, and seafood to eager markets.

LAST CENTURYThis is a land of farmers and of seafaring creatures who enjoy the grit of sand between the toes and the sweet aroma of a seaside tidal

and delivering them to market created waterfront communities like Onancock, Chincoteague, Cape Charles, Willis Wharf and Wachapreague.

In 1884, when the railroad came through, it brought about a great change in how farmers got their food to market, and so it shaped history just

OF VIRGINIA’S EASTERN SHORE as the sailing ships did, and the steamships that came after them. Thanks to the railroad, the Eastern Shore of Virginia was among the most prosperous rural regions in the United States in the earliest part of the 1900s.

In more recent years, the boxcar has given way to the 18-wheeler. Our clams are spawned in laboratories and shipped to market in jets. Sail gave way to steam, which gave way to rail, which gave way to highway. The things that endure are the land and the sea.

Curtis Badger is a well-known naturalist, author and photographer from the Eastern Shore of Virginia who has written more than thirty books on wildlife art and the natural history of the Atlantic coast.

Those who travel a distance deserve a reward, and the Lower Shore delivers. Long walks on wild beaches are matched by bike rides through maritime forests, and every night brings the bounty of the sea to the table.

Cape Charles is the perfect launch point for shopping, beaches, golf and outdoor adventures. You might spot an enormous mega–yacht docked at the Cape Charles Yacht Center. The nearby Bay Creek Resort & Club is home to Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer signature golf courses right on the Chesapeake Bay.

For a completely different experience, park the camper at Cherrystone Family Camping Resort and, just down the road, pick up some of the famed

Kiptopeke State Park, and down the beach a stretch, boats anchor offshore from Sunset Beach Resort with the stunning Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel as a backdrop.

“Even with two nights and a town that’s only ten blocks long, I didn’t see it all. Try making wooden chairs at the Windsor House on the Virginia’s Eastern Shore Artisan Trail. Rent a bike to burn off the calories from a double scoop at Brown Dog Ice Cream (best I’ve ever had). Stop by the harbor and ask to go crabbing with one of the watermen. They’ll work you hard at 4 a.m., but you’ll learn a lot.”

-- Becky Pokora Girl and Globe

Up the road, Chatham Vineyard’s French vinifera grapes are turned into the Merlots, Chardonnays, Cabernets and blends that have earned the winery medals and accolades nationwide. Launch your kayak on a guided tour to the winery and, later in the evening, sip their Church Creek Steel Chardonnay at sunset at a restaurant overlooking the Chesapeake Bay.

Eastern Shore THE CHESAPEAKE BAY BRIDGE-TUNNEL:

AN ENGINEERING MARVEL

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT) is an engineering marvel built in the early 1960s to link mainland Virginia with the Eastern Shore, which at the time, was accessible only by a very long ferry ride.

Measuring 17.6 miles from shore to shore, this facility includes more than 12 miles of low-level trestle, two mile-long tunnels, two bridges, four man-made islands, two miles of causeway and 5 ½ miles of approach roads, totaling 23 miles.

Construction of the original two-lane facility was completed in 1964. In 1999, parallel bridges and trestles opened. Construction of the Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel is scheduled to begin in October 2017.

Stop at the Bridge-Tunnel’s southernmost island to soak in the expansive views of the Bay, birdwatch, dine at the bayside restaurant serving delicious Virginia- inspired cuisine, shop for unique gifts and

pier. But hurry! This unique stop will be closing in October 2017 when construction of the Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel begins.

Renovated inns and art galleries lend a modern charm to Onancock, a walkable wharf town dating to 1680. From here, you can take the ferry to the waterman’s community of Tangier Island or explore the waters of Onancock Creek by kayak.

Farther south in Wachapreague, the day’s catch is weighed and cleaned dockside while the proud anglers soak in spacious views from the deck of The Island House restaurant.

BASE CAMP: ONANCOCKA town steeped in history, Onancock charts its founding back to 1680. Its centuries-old homes evoke an era of prosperity on the shore, particularly Ker Place, a historic house turned museum. Today, artist studios, restaurants and inns capture the vitality of the current day. Meet artists in their studios and local farmers at the Onancock Market on Saturday mornings. Walk to dinner, a movie, or a live show at the playhouse. Dining ranges from an Irish pub to sophisticated cafés to a dockside eatery where the chef plays guitar.

Over at Tom’s Cove they’re stacking bushels of blue crabs, bagging clams, culling oysters, all of this one step removed from the tables of town restaurants where you can slurp down “Chincoteague Salt” oysters or bite into a crispy soft shell crab.

For generations of families drawn by wild ponies and Atlantic surf, Chincoteague is Virginia’s Eastern Shore. This is the gateway to the world- famous Assateague Island National Seashore, nationally-renowned Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and NASA Wallops Flight Facility for rocket launches.

A country drive down Atlantic and Metompkin roads passes through hamlets like Modest Town, a small cluster of homes with old churches and historic cemeteries. This winding back road is fast becoming a bicycling favorite.
