The Galen Catholic College 2017 Timor Immer-sion group recently commenced their fundrais-ing efforts at a gourmet pizza night held at the college. Through Galen’s ongoing support over the last four years, a school in the small village of Abafala, Timor, is in now into Phase 2 of a significant rebuilding project. The 2017 Timor Immersion group will continue fundraising through other events including a trivia night to be held early next year. The group will depart to visit our Timor neighbours toward the end of March next year.

Success for Cows Create CareersOur school has been lucky enough to participate in the Cows Create Careers Project, that is created by Dairy Australia. Only two year 7 classes participated in the program, 7.3 and 7.8. We had 2 calves (Raichu and Lexi) which we kept in a pen at the back of the Year 9 rooms. We took it in turns to feed, weigh, measure and look after the little calves. The Cows Create Careers Project allows you to explore the farming industry more with having to look after the calves and also completing a project. The project consisted of three different parts: Researching and either making a Moovie, Animation, Powerpoint or a Slideshow, then a letter or a report to Dairy Australia, last of all, we had to take a funny/creative photo with the calves.

Last Wednesday seven teams from Galen attended the Presentation at the Wodonga Bowling Club. Ten other schools were in attendance as well, from across NE Vic and the Hume Region. The presenters organised lots of activities that we competed in. There was lots of smiles, laughter and lots of cheering.

At the end of the day the awards were presented, we had two groups who came an equal third and our group that came first! The Cows Create Careers Project was really fun and exciting and we would like to thank Ms Timms for all the hard work that she put into for our classes.

VEX Robotics - AustralianNational Championships

Galen Will be holding the Vex Robotics Australian National Championships on Saturday Dec 3rd.

There will be ap-proximately 36 teams competing from Melbourne, Canberra and Queensland, with three local teams trying to battle their way into contention, Galen, Borinya and Wodonga Middle Years.

The three local teams will have a huge challenge ahead of them, as they only received their VEX Robotics Kits 3 weeks before the event! They will be competing against school teams that have been competing from 1 to 5 years. That has not deterred the de-termination of the local teams. The Galen team have been coming into the Junior Lab, each recess and lunch, as well as after school and some weekend sessions.

Please feel free to come along and watch this event, and cheer on our Galen team – 9am – 3pm - Saturday Dec 3rd in the Galen Stadium. Free Entry, All welcome.

Zonta Birthing KitsTogether with their teachers, the Year 11 Community Service and Social Justice students would like to extend their thanks to all those who offered donations to this cause. We received an amazing contribution of $160 from individual donors, combined with funds raised at the Galen Founder’s Day, allowed us to purchase 200 birthing kits. These kits will play a crucial role in reducing the percentage of woman and infants who die during childbirth in developing countries worldwide. With special thanks to all of the Zonta volun-teers who assisted the students in constructing of the birthing kits and to Emma Christie, Olivia Gamble, Georgina Stallard and Erin Chadban who gave up their class time to participate.

Year 9 Science Day at Charles Sturt University

Last week Year 9s immersed in a Science Day at Charles Sturt University Wangaratta. Three teams of students from Galen, Borinya and Wodonga Middle Years College were invited to come to the day so that they could gather ideas in preparation for the Australian National VEX Robotics Championships being held here at Galen on Saturday the 3rd of December.

Students enjoyed the opportunity to chat about hurdles and successes they have had so far in the building of their robots, as well as have some informal competitions and friendly battles against each other. With only a week to go until the Champion-ships, this was a valuable time for the teams as they will be taking on experienced robotics teams from Melbourne, Canberra and Queensland.

Year 7 and 8 Boys and Girls Tennis Upper Hume Competition Friday 28th October

Year 7 Boys: ChampionsThe Year 7 boys’ team included Joe Allen, Daniel Smith, Fraser Holland-Dean, Rhys Rigoni and Callum Dart-Bell. Number 1 pairing, Joe and Daniel only lost one game for the entire day. They finished 36 games for and only 1 game against in a totally dominant display. Callum, Rhys and Fraser also played very well, winning all but one of their sets. Well done boys!

Year 7 Girls: Runner-upTeam members were Bonnie Shanley, Maggie Skewes, Jessica Gillies, Annabelle Martinac and Chloey Shallue. Most of the girls in the Galen team had never played competitive tennis before, but they improved quickly, and did well to win two of their three matches.

Year 8 Boys: ThirdLukas Evans, William Gulbin, Henry Lee, Sam berenger and Joel McGennisken comprised the team. The boys only played two matches, winning one and losing the other.

Year 8 Girls: ChampionsSophia McCarthy, Georgia Sampson, Lucy O’Connor, Charlotte Proft and Chloe Cooper won their only pool match, and then defeated Wangaratta High School quite comfortably in the final.

On Thursday November 17th, the year 7 Galen Boys Table Tennis team comprising of Joe Allan, Tom Gerrish, Fraser Holland-Dean, Daniel Smith made the long journey down to Melbourne to play in the Victorian Secondary Schools State Championships at MSAC. The boys arrived in very good spirits following some upbeat music in the bus. This must of worn off on the walk into the courts as the boys played their first game against Viewbank Secondary and were beaten convincingly. The second game the boys turned the table around and recorded a comfortable win 4-2 against Mercy College Camperdown. Our final game to determine Semi-Final placings against South-East Bendigo College, but unfortunately they were too strong for our boys as they put up a gallant performance. A remarkable effort by the boys to reach the State Finals. Well done boys!

Also on Thursday the year 8 Boys took part in the State championships for Table Tennis. With a line-up of Lachine Carboon, Lukas Evans, Hayden Pearson and Matt Somerville, the boys had every right to go in with confidence. In the first match the boys struggled against a very strong, and reigning champions, University College, spearheaded by Victoria’s #3 ranked junior table tennis player. The boys went down 0-6. Our second game against Mercy College showed what the boys were really made of, as they played some great shots to win the match 4-2. The final match of the day was against Marist College Bendigo. This was another strong team and

State Championships Table Tennisthey brought our boys back to Earth with a 1-5 loss. The boys kept their heads high and made us proud on our way home, taking in an athlete's diet of KFC & McDonald’s at Wallan. Fantastic effort boys, top 8 in the state!

On Wednesday the November 16th a team of Joanna Mul-queen, Grace Webster, Hailey Berry & Sarah Gehrig played in the State Secondary Schools Girls Table Tennis Champion-ships at MSAC. The boys played some sensational games that were often hard fought and were able to advance to the Semi-Finals. The girls won their first Semi-Final as a result of a disqualification of the team they played playing an ineli-gible player. As our girls were already on their way back to Wangaratta it was announced that they would share the State championship with the team that took the prize on the day. The girls join the exclusive club of those that have won a State Championship from Galen. So congratulations to Galen’s newest Victorian State Champions!!

The Year 7 STATE netball championships were held at the Indoor Waverley Netball centre on the 5th of September. The Galen Year 7 girls boarded the coach in darkness at about 5:00am. As they approached Melbourne, it was becoming increasingly obvious that they were in for a long day. The draw was kind however, with only three matches scheduled inside the Waverley Netball centre.

The team won its first game easily against Melbourne Girls College. Ebony O'Donohue, Bridie Nolan and Zara Berry sent the ball to the forward line many times, where Samantha Benbow, Morgan Byrne and Kelsie Wilson were very accurate in goals. Galen were overall winners by 6 goals.

The next two games against Trinity College Colac and Catholic College Bendigo were both very challenging and competitive. Boonie Shanley, Bronte Grant Aleeta Carmody, Jessica Gillies, Aislin James, and Jessica Henry all worked extremely hard across the mid court to rebound the ball

from the dangerous forwards from both teams. Unfortunately Galen lost both games by close margins to the eventual grand finalists and champions of the day. All games were memorable for their skill level, solid defence and great teamwork. Congratulations to all the girls on their great teamwork and spirit. It was a pleasure to be associated with this group of talented year 7 netballers.

A big thank you to coach Linda O’Donohue for all of her handwork with organising and coaching the team. Thank you also to POD (Peter O’Donohue) for his support and encouragement of the team as well as the parents who travelled with the team on the bus to support the girls. Thank you to Chris & Helen Berry, Mark Nolan and Michelle Wilson for taking the time off their busy schedules to support the team in Melbourne.

On Monday 14th November, seven very tired girls and two exhausted coaches set out for MSAC to play in the State Championships; for some of these girls it was the third year in a row, so they were hungry for a win.

Game 1. Galen lost to Melbourne Girls College: HT: 11-12. FT: 23-31

The game started hard and fast, with the girls getting plenty of the ball and being unafraid to put up shots, unfortunately the scoreboard did not reflect the amount of the ball that they were winning. Jorja Reidy was strong in defense, never allowing the opponent to score an easy goal, and Jade Elliott showed similar defense in our offensive half, always getting a hand to the oppositions passes. Jorja shot her clas-sic 3-pointer to get Galen on the board. Jade, Shani Rickard and Ella Kent hassled all the way down the court, where Jorja and Chloe Storer could be heard getting around them and each other, encouraging the teamwork. The Melbourne girls were intimidating, and the game was fast, but all the Galen girls put on pressure in defense and forced the errors; Chloe hit all of her free throws and strong passes ensured our girls stayed in the game. An air ball by Jorja was met by the half time siren. After half time, the girls consistently looked out for each other, playing smart and looking for the safe options. Jorja hit another three, and Jade was picking up every ball in offense, then chose smart options result-ing in more points on the board. Chloe was directing traffic, making sure the girls held their positions, and then evened the scores with three minutes to go. A change in pace in the final minutes saw MGC score a couple of quick goals, allowing them to draw away with the largest margin all game. MVP - Jade Elliot

Game 2. Galen defeated Warrnambool College: HT: 14-14. FT: 31-27

Shani Rickard worked hard to box out in defense, which paid off with Jorja putting up the first goal of the game, followed by a second goal, and then landing a free throw. Chloe put in the second (and sometimes third) effort for rebounds, used smart passes by looking down the court for the best option, and continued to organise the team with lots of talk. Galen set up an effective zone, putting on pres-sure and not allowing the rough play of opposition to get to them. Jorja inadvertently bounce passed to Shani for a flawless layup, the scoreboard helped out by Ella continuing to put up shots and find the target. The second half began with a lay-up from Chloe, then by Jorja hitting both her foul shots. Jade was excellent in defense, getting to every ball and shutting down the pass – fantastic cover. Chloe was not afraid to take on her opponent, draw the foul and sink her free throws on two separate occasions. Speaking of dou-bling up, Jorja nailed two more threes in the second half, and Ella and Shani double-teamed Warnambool and then moved out to be an option for Galen. The game ended with Chloe showing great sportsmanship, checking on her felled opponent, though she was also sent flying across the court. MVP - Jorja Reidy

Game 3. Galen lost to Bendigo South East: HT: 6-27. FT: 18-50

Madison O’Keefe was forced into the Starting 5, giving Shani a short spell. A great pass allowed her to get her first touch before rotating back into her favored position of lead cheer squad. Galen put the pressure on with Chloe in the post; Jade giving the option and Jorja searching for passes. The girls got excited when Jorja stripped the ball from BSE and nailed her layup. Jorja made up for missing free throws by sinking the next set a short time later. Jade kept her eye on the play, picking up all of the unanswered balls, and all girls moved well around the court. They looked out for each other and shared the load, and Ella kept the pressure on down both ends of the court. There was plenty of effort on the court and pressure on the opponent, but Galen could not find the ring. The second half began with Chloe’s bril-liant denial of a shot, Shani helped her out by putting on pressure, and down the other end Chloe and Jorja then set up an offensive play, which paid off in the short term. Jorja employed an interesting tactic of protecting the ball, with her whole body, on top of it, whilst lying on the ground. Chloe then decided to give this tactic a go shortly after. With solid support from Mads and Olivia McDonald at the bench, cheering them on all day, the girls did not drop their heads and continued to put in the effort required of them. Chloe and Jorja trialed different plays - keeping it fresh, but it was the same story in the second half with the girls getting plenty of the ball but failing to land their shots. We were outmatched by a highly skilled opponent who moved the ball very quickly, making use of every turnover; Chloe broke the drought by landing both free throws, with the team keeping their spirits up and getting around each other with hi-5's – Shani used this time for a quick pit-stop at the sideline for a drink. Jorja landed two free throws and Chloe's second efforts continued, screening two players at once, giving Jorja space to put up a shot. Chloe kept laying screens and boxing out for the rebound - didn't give in, and played it right out until the end.MVP - Chloe Storer

The overall MVP of the day was Chloe Storer due to her ability to guide the team effectively, her great sportsman-ship and ‘never say die’ attitude. Thanks for a lovely day ladies, even if the singing on the way home was so out of key it was almost unbearable.
