2016 New Zealand Aria

This year marks the 70th anniversary of this prestigious event and it is a very great pleasure to welcome participants, judges and concert goers back to the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre.

Once again the New Zealand Aria Trust, supported by the Dame Malvina Major Foundation, founding sponsors and more recent supporters must be commended for providing concert goers with the extraordinary celebration of song that is Finals Night.

However, this special event is much more than Finals Night. As one of Australasia’s most significant competitions of its kind, the New Zealand Aria offers life-changing opportunities to entrants and has launched the careers of many fine young singers.

It will be wonderful to welcome guest artist Simon O’Neal back to Rotorua. Simon is one of the finest helden-tenors on the international stage. He is a principal artist with the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Teatro alla Scala and both the Bayreuth and Salzburg festivals.

In 2015 we fair welled Max Cryer whose sterling service had seen him compere twenty of the last twenty-one New Zealand Aria finals nights. It will be a pleasure to welcome respected performer Helen Medlyn to the role this year.

If you are a visitor to Rotorua, I hope that you enjoy your time with us. We are proud of our history as the birthplace of tourism in New Zealand and invite you to explore our city and experience our traditional hospitality.

I wish all contestants every success in the New Zealand Aria 2016.
