Raise your company’s profile in the fight to make global surgery safer

“Lifeboxes for Rio is a great scheme which can help save lives across the world. Dr Andrew Hartle played his part in delivering a successful Olympic and Paralympic Games in London and I am delighted that he is now leading this initiative, just another example of the legacy from the 2012 Games manifesting itself in unexpected ways. I am sure that athletes and sports leaders will want to lend their support.”

Lord Sebastian Coe CH KBE, the UK Prime Minister’s Olympic and Paralympic Legacy Ambassador and Chairman of the British Olympic Association.

Dear industry colleagues,

I’m writing to ask for your help to make global surgery safer.

I recently launched a fundraising campaign called ‘Lifeboxes for Rio’ to raise £96,000 to buy 600 Lifebox pulse oximeters, the same as the number of Team GB athletes attending the next Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro (5 - 21 August 2016).

Why Lifeboxes? I’m sure most of you are aware of the dangers of hypoxia (oxygen starvation), or the vital importance of pulse oximetry during anaesthesia. A pulse oximeter is the only monitor mandated by the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist, but around the world

approximately 70,000 operating theatres do not have them, leading to 31 million patients suffering needlessly every year. Lifebox Foundation, was set up to provide robust pulse oximeters, and all the necessary training in their use. These 600 Lifeboxes will protect 780,000 lives each year.

Why Rio? I was the Games Maker at the London 2012 Olympics who talked to Lord Sebastian Coe on a Tube train about my involvement with the victims of the 7/7 bombings and the closure the Olympics had given me. I would like to tap into the generosity of spirit and international community generated by the Games to harness our ability to make surgery safer for patients worldwide. As I said to Lord Coe, and as he repeated at the closing ceremony of the Paralympic Games, with the 7/7 bombings and then the celebration of humanity that was London 2012 “I’ve seen the worst of mankind, and now I’ve seen the best of mankind”. I would like all our industry partners to get involved as corporate supporters of the fundraising campaign supported by Lord Darzi and Lord Coe. The campaign runs until September 2016 (just after the Olympics). If your company would be able to contribute, by raising funds in any way, that would be superb. I’d be delighted to come and talk to you, or provide further information.

Do please get in touch and let me know if you’re able to help.

With very many thanks

Dr Andrew HartleAAGBI President

Overview of Lifebox

Lifebox Foundation is a new charity for a new crisis: unsafe surgery.

For the first time in history, you are more likely to be killed by a surgically-treatable condition than a communicable disease – but global surgery hasn’t kept pace.

In countries around the world, surgery is up to a thousand times more dangerous than in the UK. More than 70,000 operating theatres lack access to essential monitoring. Risk of dying from anaesthesia alone is as high as 1:133.

Lifebox is working to change this.

How? Equipment + education = life-saving change.

Lifebox donates high quality, environment-appropriate pulse oximeters to operating theatres around the world where surgery is taking place without this vital monitor.

The education and training ensures long-term use, teamwork, and safer practice.

Surgery should be life-saving, not life-threatening – and Lifeboxes for Rio will help make this a reality worldwide.

‘During a routine caesarean section, the patient started complaining of pain. At that moment, the power failed in the hospital and the generator stopped working. I was grateful for the Lifebox as it ran on batteries; I knew I could rely on it. I could hear the beep of the alarm whilst the nurse held the torch so we could see. I felt the patient was safe because of Lifebox.’

Why get involved as a corporate supporter?

By supporting Lifebox and the Lifeboxes for Rio campaign, your company will be helping to put vital pulse oximetry equipment in operating theatres around the world. Tens of thousands of lives are lost every year in over 70,000 operating rooms worldwide because doctors do not have adequate means to monitor patients. Other reasons to get involved are:• As a company involved in the manufacturing or

development of anaesthesia equipment or products, it’s your chance to make a pledge to improve anaesthesia provision for patients worldwide.

• Fundraising is rewarding for everyone involved and this could be an opportunity for your staff to take part. With the support of the whole company, the AAGBI can raise more awareness, spread the fundraising effort to more people and make a real impact to the cause.

• Fundraising challenges can boost staff morale and encourage team building.

• You’ll be able to promote the good work your organisation is doing and put your company in the spotlight. Fundraising will generate positive PR opportunities, attract media attention and give you more to talk about with your customers, clients and partners!

Levels of supportThere are four tiers of support with a variety of attractive benefits, depending on how many Lifeboxes you pledge to raise the funds for.

Access to safe surgery is essential at every level of a healthcare system, and each tier is named after a different aspect of surgical services.

Local Supporter – up to ten Lifeboxes (£1,600)A local health centre is the first port of call for a woman in labour, for a child burned by a cooking fire, or a commuter knocked off a bike. Health centres are fundamental to extending access to safe surgical care.

Pledge to raise the funds for up to four Lifeboxes and receive the following benefits:

• Name, logo and link on the AAGBI website• Tweet of thanks including your company username.

Referral Supporter – between 11 and 35 (£5,600) LifeboxesCases too complicated for the local health centre are sent on to a referral hospital. Often several million people rely on it for life-saving treatment, travelling hundreds of kilometres for care.A safe, skilled emergency c-section at a referral hospital will save two lives - mother and baby - when nothing else can. As a Referral Supporter you’ll receive all the benefits of the Local Supporter. In addition your company will receive:• Name and logo on-screen in the foyer at the

AAGBI’s Annual Congress, Edinburgh• Photos and story showcased on the AAGBI’s social

networking sites.

National Supporter – between 36 and 80 (£12,800) LifeboxesA national hospital is essential, not just to its patients, but to the population - often it provides training to healthcare workers across the whole country. National hospitals are where the specialists are based, sometimes just a handful for a population of millions. The most complex, high-profile procedures are performed there.

As a National Supporter you’ll receive all the benefits of the Local and Referral Supporter, plus:

• Dedicated news item in @AAGBI, the e-newsletter of the AAGBI

Global Supporter – Over 81 (£12,960) LifeboxesSurgery takes place in the operating theatre, but decisions about healthcare priorities are made at government and international level. Conversations about surgery are finally taking place at a high enough level to foresee a fundamental change in the way we address the surgical safety crisis and the global burden of surgical need.

As a Global Supporter, you’ll receive all the benefits of the Local, National and Referral Supporter, plus:

• Dedicated article on fundraising efforts in members’ magazine Anaesthesia News that goes out to all 10,800 AAGBI members

• Joint press release with the AAGBI announcing the sponsorship including a quote from AAGBI President, Dr Andrew Hartle.

Fundraising doesn’t have to be a chore; here are just a few tried and tested ways for you to make it fun and get your colleagues involved:

• Host a raffle. Everyone loves the chance to win a prize. Maybe your company would donate a day off?

• Get sponsored to take part in a bike ride, running race or a jump out of a plane...

• Create some healthy competition with an inter-department competition such as a lunchtime quiz.

• Host a dress down day.• Whip up a batch of cakes and sell them to your

colleagues.

How can your company raise the funds to help the campaigN

Charity of the yearDoes your company have a charity of the year? Why not nominate Lifebox and the Lifeboxes for Rio campaign?

Nominating Lifebox for your charity of the year is a great way for your whole company to work together to make a really positive impact on anaesthesia in low to middle income countries. Charity of the year partnerships create positive relationships for organisations and promote team spirit, boost staff morale and engage employees with a shared focus.

Matched Giving Many companies now operate a matched funding scheme, whereby they will match all the funds raised by one of their employees up to a specified limit. So, if an employee were to raise £200, your company will match that money with another £200. Worth asking!

Payroll Giving Payroll giving is one of the easiest ways for employees to give regularly to Lifebox plus it’s both flexible and tax efficient. Employees choose how much they want to give each month. The donation then comes off their gross pay, before the tax man touches it. Lifebox would benefit from payroll giving because receiving regular donations means it can make financial plans for the long-term future – knowing it can rely on the regular gifts of its payroll donors. Employees can give as much or as little as they like, and because the donation is taken from their pay before tax, it actually costs them less. There are lots of ways to take part: use one of these ideas or come up with your own fundraising concept.
