From The Bridge Robert Juenemann

AcuFeed Observation & Analysis

Janome’s AcuFeed System has been available for about ten

years. It first appeared on the 6600 P model, released simul-

taneously with the 11K embroidery machine and is now

available on 4 other models.

The driving linkage is to my eye, very similar to that which

was used on the formerly German machine, Pfaff. That feed

system was in my opinion, a step beyond most of the feed

systems on most sewing machines available at the time. I

(and many others) have come to identify the weakest fea-

ture in sewing machines to be their inability to adequately

feed any and every fabric that gets thrown at them.

For reasons unknown to me, Pfaff (and many other manu-

facturers) abandoned the presser foot pressure dial (the

function of which was my discussion two newsletters ago).

The Pfaff IDT was revolutionary in the domestic sewing

machine market. I would surmise that presser foot pressure

adjustment may have been felt to be an unnecessary option

given the improved traction that 18sq mm of auxiliary feed

was bringing to those machines.

With the release of Janome’s AcuFeed System, I saw altera-

tions (to what looked similar) to Pfaff”s IDT. Janome’s

system employs 8.66 times more surface area (156sq.mm),

a presser foot pressure adjustment dial and a differential

adjustment dial to compensate for different materials being

joined by the same set of stitches. ( Fabric pile or loft and

fabric surface characteristics can challenge feed systems).

This is accomplished by slowing or speeding the upper feed

relative to the lower. The upper and

lower feed dogs are also deployed

simultaneously upon first contact with

the fabric giving you options with the

application of presser foot pressure.

(Too much foot pressure can interfere

with fabric feed). I see this combina-

tion of features in no other brand of

domestic sewing machines presently.

Continued I discovered (while demoing AcuFeed) that these

adjustable options used in tandem and/or conjunction with one

another have solved fabric feeding problems from top fabric slip-

page (during in–the-ditch quilting with high loft, poly-batting) to

running several feet of stitches on Hugo Tape (a demo for an

educational program). It took a small bit of physical analysis of

materials (brain activity) to come up with the right combination

of feature options but they were all there in the design and manu-

facture. (Hugo Tape is designed to stick to itself but also sticks to

smooth, hard materials like the soles of presser feet and needle

plates). I have yet to see an independent review that fully reveals

and discusses the “techno-leaps” of Janome’s AcuFeed System.

It is true that large, high-lumen screens and often semi-effective,

auto-features are appealing and do bring wow factor to many ma-

chines, but I am still more impressed by features that bring per-

formance.
