A highly readable introduction to the causes of extinction, the different types of extinction and what can be done to prevent extinction occurring.
n Ties in with a new exhibition opening at the Natural History Museum in February 2013
n Illustrated with full colour illustrations, photographs and maps throughout
More than 999 of every 1,000 species that have ever lived on the planet have become extinct.
As part of evolution, extinction of the old allows emergence of the new. It is integral to the
Earth’s continually changing range and richness of life-forms. Presenting the latest extinction
research in an accessible and engaging way, Extinction: Not the End of the World? is a highly
readable introduction to the causes of extinction, the different types of extinction and what
can be done to prevent extinction occurring. The book discusses today’s key issues, from
biodiversity and conservation to the threat of human extinction, as well as exploring the major
extinction events of the past and explaining how scientists know all this.
Steve Parker is an author, editor
and consultant specializing in the
natural world, biology, technology

An in-depth guide to species extinctions and their many causes and impacts, drawing on the latest evidence from previous extinction events.
n Written by leading palaeontologist Norman MacLeod from the Natural History Museum
n Contains informative illustrations and diagrams throughout
For over a century geologists have tried to identify and understand the processes responsible for
the complex history of species extinction. This search has become even more important over
the last decade as human populations and human technology may now rival sea level change,
volcanic eruptions, and asteroid impacts as mass extinction mechanisms. The Great Extinctions
explores the history of that search, its subjects, its controversies, its current conclusions, and
the meaning of those conclusions for our efforts to preserve the Earth’s current biodiversity.
Examining extinction over geological time, the book compares past geological extinction events
and uses them to predict what is likely to happen in the future.
Professor Norman Macleod
is Dean of Postgraduate Studies
and Training at the Natural History
Museum, London. His research
involves studies of extinction,
the origin and evolution of form
in fossils and modern organisms,
and the distribution of ancient and
modern species in time.

these beautiful images, from fine botanical and zoological illustrations through to depictions of
colourful artefacts and trinkets purchased in local markets. The artworks originate from a variety
of sources that include individual artists and collectors, as well as organised studies of Indian
natural history in the pursuit of science and commerce.

Comprehensive identification guide to over 350 Mesozoic fossil species found in Britain, now fully revised and updated.
n Essential work of reference for all students of geology
n In print for more than 45 years and now fully revised and updated
The Mesozoic era ranged from 240 million to 65 million years ago. In British Mesozoic Fossils
365 species from this period are classified and illustrated with accurate line drawings. This new
edition has been fully revised and updated by Dr Andrew Smith, Merit Researcher in the
Museum’s Palaeontology Department, reflecting advances in our understanding of the fossil
record over the past years.
The book’s 147-page identification section features those fossil animal and plant species that
are most commonly found in Britain. Each of the species is illustrated with at least one drawing,
which is accompanied by details of where it can be found. There is also a brief introduction to
the subject, stratigraphical tables and a map of the distribution of strata.
Since it was first published, the British Fossils series of three books has established itself as
a classic work of reference for all students
of geology. The other titles available in this
series are British Caenozoic Fossils and British
Palaeozoic Fossils (page 34).

John James Audubon was a naturalist and painter and is considered one of the greatest
bird artists of all time. Born in Haiti in 1785, he spent much of his life travelling North America
observing, catching and drawing birds and animals in remarkable detail. Using a variety of
materials to create a highly dramatic style, he painted almost 500 species of the 700 or so

Through exquisite botanical paintings and insightful essays, Flora examines the fascinating history of plants and flowers.
n An enchanting voyage of discovery capturing the wonder of plant exploration through art
n Beautifully illustrated with rare botanical paintings archived at the Natural History Museum
Over 20 plant families are profiled in Flora, including cacti, daffodils, iris, magnolia, roses, tulips
and waterlilies. At the same time the book tells the remarkable stories of the adventurous
botanists who braved disease, slave traders, war, jungles and other dangers to collect plants
now commonly grown in our own gardens. It describes how plants have adopted remarkable
behaviours for survival in a variety of harsh habitats, and how, throughout history, they have
affected our lives, even shaping societies. The seventeenth century spice trade, for example,
was so profitable that stevedores who unloaded nutmeg from the boats had to wear coveralls
without pockets as a single nutmeg was worth a fortune.
The book is graced with hundreds of stunning color illustrations selected from the vast
collection of original botanical paintings archived at the Natural History Museum.

n Accessible introduction to all of Homo sapiens’ key ancestors
n Revised and updated edition featuring new research and all the latest discoveries
Over the past 25 years there has been an explosion of species’ names in the story of human
evolution, due both to new discoveries and to a growing understanding of the diversity that
existed in the past. Drawing on this new information, as well as his own considerable expertise
and practical experience, Charles Lockwood explains in clear, easy-to-follow language, what
each of the key species represents and how it contributes to our knowledge of human evolution.
He describes the main sites, the individual fossils, the people and stories involved in the key
discoveries and the basic facts about each species – what it looked like, how and when it lived
and what it ate as well as explaining how we know all this.
The text in this revised edition has been updated by a team of experts led by leading
palaeoanthropologist Chris Stringer. It includes drawings, photographs and maps throughout to
illustrate and enhance the text and help demystify the fascinating cast of characters who hold
the secret to man’s origins.
Charles Lockwood was Lecturer in Human Evolution in the Department of Anthropology
at University College London. He was an expert on early hominid taxonomy and evolutionary
relationships. Charles died in 2008 aged 37. Professor Chris Stringer is the Natural History

An enthralling account of Alfred Russel Wallace’s exploration to the wildest parts of the Amazon basin in 1848 – now in paperback.
n Describes the triumphs, disasters and discoveries during this nineteenth century adventure
n Contains Wallace’s little-seen pencil sketches and quotes from his own writings
Alfred Russel Wallace is justly famous for his discoveries in Southeast Asia, from where he wrote
to Charles Darwin outlining his theory of evolution by natural selection. His career as a tropical
naturalist, however, began in the Amazon. Wallace concentrated his collecting on the Rio Negro
and the Rio Vaupés and his collections and observations proved of great value to the scientific
community in England. On his return home in 1852 disaster struck. The ship on which he was
travelling caught fire and all his precious collections were destroyed. As he fled the ship he
managed to salvage a small tin box with a few delicate pencil drawings.
Wallace’s Amazonian adventure is told here, using mainly his own words and illustrated with
these delicate drawings. He went on to become one of the defining figures of Victorian biology,
and this is the story of his beginning.
Sandra Knapp is a botanist at the Natural History Museum in London, who has written
numerous books and scientific papers. She has spent many years collecting plants in tropical
