A water utility’s inefficient AC-AC power UPS system failed about every three years, resulting
in a critical radio system also failing. To upgrade the system, Phoenix Contact’s QUINT UPS-
IQ was selected. The QUINT UPS-IQ has intelligent battery modules that answer common
reliability questions:
• Is the battery fully charged?
• How long will the battery backup last?
• Does the battery need replacement?
• Can the aging battery still supply the proper amount of energy?
A Phoenix Contact ILC controller speaks to the UPS through a Modbus TCP/IP interface.
The utility can control the ILC as it would any other PLC, allowing the relay to interrupt UPS
line power and allow periodic battery tests. The modular, DIN rail-mountable QUINT UPS-IQ
fit nicely in the racked radio cabinets. The utility also installed the proper Phoenix Contact surge
protection, extending the UPS warranty to five years. Phoenix Contact components also meet
higher temperature requirements, translating to higher reliability and longer lifespans.

Push-in TechnologyPush-in Technology (PT) improves industrial applications by providing fast, easy, and secure connections
PLC PT relays are equipped with our leg-
spring, push-in-termination technology.
Terminate by simply pushing the wire
into the PT terminal, using very little
force. No tools are required for insertion.
This time-saving connection technology
is enhanced even further with the use of
a ferrule, making connections easy and
reliable. To disconnect, simply insert a
screwdriver into the orange release key,
push, and release the wire.
Our push-in technology creates a high
degree of usability and includes a wide
range of connections, from 26 AWG to
14 AWG wire sizes. PLC PT relays provide
you with a fast, easy, safe connection and
eliminate the need for insertion tools.
Product highlights:• UL-listed, CSA, CE, GOST, and
GL approvals
• No tools required with push-in
termination technology
• Five times the IEC requirement for pull-
out (retention force)
• Wide-range relays from
electromechanical and solid state to
SPDT or DPDT
• Clear visual indication of
termination area
PT push-in terminal blocks set a new
standard in connection technology. Solid
and ferruled conductors can simply be
pushed into the terminal block, using half
the force of similar blocks. Even more
unique is the orange push button’s short
travel distance to open the spring, which
terminates all conductors.
A higher contact force than standard spring
means lower contact resistance and higher
pull-out force. The PT 1.5/S and PT 2.5
sizes are also available in a mini version
that fits on a 15-mm wide DIN rail. New
PTPOWER blocks allow easy termination
of large conductors, up to 4/0 AWG, with a
Phoenix Contact exclusive POWER TURN
lever that opens the spring with simple pivot
action, maintaining their push-in capabilities.
Product highlights:• Easy push-in termination of ferruled
conductors, or short depression of
orange actuator for stranded conductors
• Dual-bridge channel for signal
potential distribution
• Large cable-entry funnel supports
conductors with or without ferrules
• Disconnect double-level and Combi-
pluggable connectors combine
• Pluggable components and test adapters
VIP PT interface modules further simplify
control cabinet wiring with the new PT
termination. Land your field I/O wires
to the VIP PT terminals through the fast,
strong, and reliable push-in connection.
VIP system cabling allows you to connect
your controller to the field I/O quickly,
accurately, and securely. This plug-and-play
approach saves time with faster cabinet
wiring, compared to the tedious point-to-
point method of control wiring. Save time
and labor, and simplify wiring with VIP PT

A rail customer building signaling and control cabinets with a lot of connection points was
experiencing issues with screw and spring-cage connections. They wanted to reduce labor costs
by eliminating individual wiring and torqueing of each screw connection. These issues were easily
resolved by switching from competitive relays and improving connections using Phoenix Contact’s
PT PLC Relays with PT push-in termination technology and push-in bridging accessories.
While the amount of connections points remained the same, wiring time became faster because
there was no longer a need to torque the screws; wires are now simply pushed into the relay
terminals. No tools required. The cut-to-fit bridge helps reduce individual wiring, as multiple relays
can be jumpered with one push-in bridge.
Overall, PT PLC Relays reduced wiring time and lowered overall labor costs.

A large gas operations field in the Southwest U.S. with thousands of wells, compressor stations,
and miles of pipeline, required upgrades of their existing systems in order to achieve maximum
reliability and uptime, ensuring sustained profitability. Having lost a significant amount of equipment
and revenues from downtime in the past, the need for effective surge protection with preventive
maintenance monitoring was the logical solution. In addition, many remote sites operated on 12 V
DC solar panels, making power consumption a concern as well.
With industry leading protection from surge events, the PT-IQ family delivered best-in-class
performance to mitigate the effects of damaging transients, while remote monitoring through
a cellular network provided feedback of the three-stage status monitoring for preventive
maintenance. A feature allowing the local LED good-status indication to be turned off helped
address the concerns of power consumption.
The customer quickly recognized the value of the superior protection and overall advantages of
the PT-IQ family. The long-term benefits significantly outweighed their initial investment. PT-IQ is
quickly becoming recognized as the standard method of protection in the industry.

Safety relaysMultifunctional safety relays improve industrial applications by offering three safety functions in one device, reducing cost and space for small and medium machine builders
The PSR-MXF multifunctional safety relay is the newest addition to the Phoenix
Contact PSR safety relay line. This relay can help small and medium machine
builders reduce cost and save space. The PSR-MXF accepts up to three dual-
channel safety sensors: two local, independent sensor circuits, as well as an
overriding safety circuit useful for simultaneous shutdown. With this safety circuit,
one safety relay can do a job that would otherwise require three safety relays or a
configurable safety relay.
The PSR-MXF closes the gap between two traditional types of safety solutions.
For example, some engineers achieve emergency shutdown by wiring several
safety sensors in-series into a single relay. Though this design is inexpensive and
simple, it results in a loss of diagnostic capabilities and can mask critical safety
faults in the system.
A more comprehensive solution is to individually wire sensors to relays or to use
configurable safety systems; however, conventional safety relays are often expensive
and configurable systems are often over-dimensioned. With the PSR-MXF,
engineers achieve the advanced safety capabilities at a competitive price point.
Product highlights:• Three safety functions at a fraction of the price
• Three safety inputs (two independent switch off paths, one overriding circuit)
• Four enabled current paths, two alarm contacts
• Two confirmation current paths (reses)
• Easy set-up of safety functions – no cross-wiring, no programming required
• Four versions with different functionalities
• Wide application range reduces part numbers
• Push-In terminals saves installation time
• Small size reduces required space in panels indication of surge
protection devices
• Available with conventional screw connection or convenient push-in
connection technology22 PHOENIX CONTACT

Injection molding machines are ideal for the PSR-MXF multifunction safety relay. Typical injection
molding machines have an overriding e-stop and two guard doors controlling their safety.
Connecting these sensors to achieve the highest levels of safety normally requires three separate
safety relays or the use of a configurable safety relay. While both options can achieve PLe/SIL3
ratings, the list price can start around $800. In this competitive environment both solutions could
price an OEM out of the market.
Obstacles like these can force manufacturers to choose between cost and levels of safety. To stay
within their desired overall machine cost, OEMs often daisy-chain safety sensors (which prevents
the highest levels of safety using a standard sensor) or improperly use wiring of safety relays (using
two single-channel inputs in the dual-channel input of a safety relay.)
The PSR-MXF keeps costs low (listing at $375) by allowing all three safety sensors to be connected
in a single relay with the highest safety levels. This high-quality machine now yields the highest
levels of safety, while staying competitively priced. Added benefits in this situation are: simplified
wiring versus a three-relay solution and no programming required. Engineering time (software
configuration) and wiring time on the units are both minimized.

• CONTACTRON hybrid motor startersCan I switch the two independent switch-off paths to override mode? No, there is only one override channel; the other two channels will always switch
independent of each other.
Is T-bus expansion of relay contacts available for the PSR-MXF? No, all expansion relays need to be wired through the provided NO contacts.
Are the reset paths independent? Yes, each input has its own reset input. These can be wired for automatic or
manual reset.

Phoenix Contact’s Heavycon EVO is designed to be used
in harsh, dirty environments. The heavy-duty rectangular
connector is available in both durable plastic and a salt-water
resistant aluminum version which provides EMC protection.
Having the right part number in stock is often an issue with
rectangular connectors because of the number of variations
available. Heavycon EVO addresses this issue directly with

North American Cordsets Heavycon connectors
In machine building applications, prior to sale, UL listing is often required on the final piece
of equipment. Because Phoenix Contact’s cordsets are UL listed (rather than UL recognized)
the customer can use them at any stage in the product life cycle – including MRO – without
jeopardizing their UL status.
Additionally, the power limited tray cable (PLTC) rating on our cordsets opens up new installation
opportunities, including installation outside of a cable tray when properly supported.
Finally, our new 18 AWG TPE cordsets provide a simple solution for preventing signal loss on
longer cable runs, while also ensuring longevity in flexible applications. This allows OEMs to enjoy
industry leading lead times while reducing their costs and simplifying their installations.

A large injection molding manufacturer replaced the heavy-duty connectors they were using with
Phoenix Contact’s new Heavycon EVO connectors.
The main reasons for the switch were the reduced stock levels they needed to keep, the fact that
the HEAVYCON EVO fit into the existing product footprint, and that they were compatible with
the current connectors in use(legacy product).
A testing video showing the product durability was well received by the manufacturers’ engineers.
The reduced cost of the HEAVYCON EVO plastic compared to their existing connector was the
final determining factor.

To comply with EPA regulations and prevent potential problems, the operator of a 20-mile wide
oil-well production field needed to monitor the tank levels of multiple remote oil production/
compression sites, as well as all of the central delivery points.
The challenge was to provide automatic shutdown of production whenever high levels occurred.
Shutdown would avoid spilling and minimize the environmental impact. An alarm system was in
place, but its notification system was too slow and often failed to transmit any notifications at all.
To ensure reliability, the operator chose Radioline as their conduit for communication. With
Radioline, their platform gained flexibility on Modbus communications and even more flexibility for
wire replacement applications.
Radioline allowed them to easily set up one wireless module as the master to communicate with
multiple remote sites, while achieving control using only a single master. The low-power draw
was another distinct advantage for the remote sites, freeing engineers from the need to replace
batteries frequently.

Is Radioline compatible with the first generation radios? No. Radioline is not compatible with any first generation radio. It is a completely
new platform that can only communicate to other Radioline modules on the
same frequency.
Does Radioline support Ethernet communications? No. In order to optimize performance for I/O-to-I/O, I/O-to-Modbus and serial-
to-serial device communications, Radioline does not support direct Ethernet
communications. For some applications requiring Ethernet communications a Comm-
server (2313452 – FL COMSERVER UNI 232/422/485) can be used at the master
location of a Radioline network. Alternatively, WLAN or TWE products could be used
in some applications. For assistance in selecting the correct product for an Ethernet
application, please contact our Technical Support department.
What is the difference in range of the Radioline 2.4 GHz vs. 900 MHz options?Radioline 2.4 GHz should be recommended for applications that have clear line-of-
sight in distances up to 1,500 feet. For obstructed distances less than 1,500 feet
– or distances great than 1,500 feet – Radioline 900 MHz should be recommended.
Radioline 900 MHz is able to cover distances up to 20 miles when installed with the
correct antennas, in accordance with a proper site survey.

The Lightning Monitoring System (LM-S) detects and analyzes all the key parameters of lightning
surge currents. The lightning current is recorded by sensors installed on lightning arresters and is
forwarded to a measuring unit. This unit determines the currents and saves their characteristics.
A web browser can be used to obtain detailed information on the lightning strike. The LM-S can
be independently integrated into networks via a modem or the integrated Ethernet interface. The
system can also be integrated into an existing higher-level control system by calling IP addresses.
The TRABTECH Business Unit of Phoenix Contact USA is working with a major university to
complete a case study inside their Lightning Research Group. The project uses mGuard technology
to secure the remote LMS stations and open a secure connection through the mGuard Secure
