Background• 2009 – EDINA proposed a single flexible platform
for multimedia content – key aims:Simplify search by allowing cross-search of existing
platforms from single location, with browse functionsAllow for addition of new contentAllow for removal of old content (e.g. Getty licence
for images in Education Image Gallery ended in 2010)Reduce ongoing running costs
• 2010 – funding agreed for EDINA and JISC Collections to develop new multimedia platform, in response to a formal request from JISC for a joint proposal

Digital Images for Education project
• JISC project to provide education community with high-resolution images for download. Procurement commenced January 2009.
• Independent team of evaluators selected: 8 still image collections - 56,000 still images 3 moving image collections – 500 hours of film Content focussed on post-1985 UK history from both
commercial and community collections• Still images currently in Education Image Gallery
(until 31 July 2011)• All image/video/audio content is now available to

multimedia services (EDINA handling migration of existing subscribers)
Usability testing by external agency and incremental changes
• August 2011 Next version of service officially launched New functions expected – including Advanced search,
Explore, Commenting/tagging• Updates via the blog and other announcements

Evolving collections policy
• Informed by JISC Collections community panels policy then agreed between EDINA, JISC and JISC
Collections
• Ensuring a good balance of content E.g. with sufficient scientific material; image/sound/video
content
• Representing interests of small and large collection owners prominent display of smaller collections APIs only for collection owners prepared to share metadata

implementation
