TraditionalW O R S H I P
Weve all heard many times that EmmanuelmeansGod with us. El is the root word for God, meaning
might, strength, power. It is almost always qualified
with additional words to distinguish God from pagangods. i.e. El Elyonthe Most High God. Elijah, Eli,Elisha, Elkanah, Samuel, Bethel, Gabriel, Michael
for example, all make use of the El in their names,
indicating their association with the true God. In
worship today we are looking at the marvelous truth of
the Gods presence with his people. You will see thatthread woven throughout the worship service, being
expressed in various ways. The early weeks of Advent
highlight the news that the Messiah is coming among
us; Gods presence will be with us. One of the Advent
songs (8:30 service only #156) points to the forerunner
of Jesus, his cousin, John the Baptist, who preachedfrom the banks of the Jordan River at the outset of
Jesus public ministry. Note the Trinitarian reference
in final verse. The best news of all is that God is in our
midst (Emmanuel)in this sanctuary this morning. Let usacknowledge his presence among us as we worship.

FamilyThe lighting of this second Advent candle depicts theever-increasing brightness of light as we patiently waitfor the coming of Christ, the Light of the World.
The people who walked in darkness have seen a
great light. Upon those who dwelt in the land of glooma light has shone.
O Rising Dawn, Jesus Christ, Radiance of the Lighteternal: come and enlighten those who sit in darknessand in the shadow of death.
CongregationKeep your attention closely fixed on it, as you wouldon a lamp shining in a dark place, until the first streaksof dawn appear and the morning star rises in yourheart.
