Maya Angelouby Edith Hathaway
MAYA ANGELOU GREW UP A descen-
dant of slaves, an African-
American woman fighting to
find her personal identity in a turbulent
social and political environment, seething
with the injustices of racism and segrega-
tion. Her personal situation in childhood
and later was often not secure or even
safe. Yet astrologically, the constellation
(Nakshatra or Moon Mansion-Ed.)
rising in her chart is Magha, meaning
“great” or “mighty one,” and symbolized
by the throne room. A constellation
entirely within Leo, Magha is near the
lion’s forehead and the royal star Regu-
lus. Thus, the innate tendency is to yearn
for greatness and to feel as if one has
inherited royal status, no matter what
humble circumstances one is born into.
In her life as in her poem Phenomenal
Woman, six foot tall Angelou learned to
break through all that….When the
Ascendant is within the first 3° 20’ of a
fire sign, it is considered in Gandanta,
but is not as problematic as the last 3° 20’
of a water sign. In fact, the first 3° 20’
(pada) of a fire sign assures the
Navamsha Ascendant will be Aries, thus
doubling the impact of the fire sign
Ascendant...This adds to the physical
vitality and personal initiative, although it
also depends on where the Navamsha
(To commemmorate the life of author, poet, and activist Maya Angelou, who
passed away on May 28, 2014, we are printing an excerpt from the chapter
about her, which appeared in Edith Hathaway’s 2012 book “In Search of
Destiny: Biography, History & Culture As Told Through Vedic Astrology.”
Hathaway’s astrological analysis utilizes Vedic astrology, which is based on
the sidereal zodiac, and utilizes techniques that may be new to practitioners of
Western astrology. For information about Vedic astrology alongside a diagram
of Maya Angelou’s chart, please turn to p. 2-Ed.)
Ascendant Lord is located. Her Navamsha
Mars is in the 8th house in Scorpio, its own
sign. This repeats the message of some
danger to her physical body during Mars
Dasha, ages 3 to10. (The Navamsha is
somewhat comparable to the 9th har-
monic chart. The Dashas are the planetary
periods into which one’s life is divided-Ed.)
The Sun as Ascendant lord is not well
placed in the 8th house for physical well-
being, but gives excellent intuitive powers
and the potential for powerful spiritual
transformation—or total self-destruction.
Fortunately the Sun is in the sign of its
great good friend Jupiter, contacting
Jupiter and opposite the Moon—Full
Moon chart, very close to exactly full
within a few hours or about three degrees.
The close Sun-Jupiter combination is in a
less difficult house in the Navamsha chart.
They recur together in Capricorn in the
Navamsha 10th house, improving the
health and vitality and giving her more
status. Sun in the 10th house enjoys
maximum visibility and influence, and the
person with both Leo Ascendant and Full
Moon has a double need to feel seen and
recognized.
However, Navamsha Jupiter is in its sign
of debilitation (Capricorn), and thus will
bring situations of disadvantage that she
page 2
must keep rising above. She also has to be
practical many times when she would prefer
to follow her ideals. This theme will strongly
affect her career and status, especially during
her 16-year Jupiter Dasha, from November 18,
1956 through November 18, 1972.
In 1969 she published her first book: I Know
Why the Caged Bird Sings. It was the first of
her series of autobiographies, and was
nominated for the National Book award. In it
she recounted her early childhood, almost as
a salve to recover from her despair at the
death of Martin Luther King. Although she
had danced, sung, and acted in various
productions from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess
to Brecht’s Mother Courage and Genet’s The
Blacks, starting out in the early 1950s with a
Caribbean accent as “Miss Calypso,” she was
irresistibly drawn as a poet and a writer to the
autobiographical statement. The Leo Ascen-
dant person will make a special effort to seek
his or her own personal identity, and with Sun
in the 8th house of Moksha, one’s path of
self-discovery may well lead to a far greater
spiritual perspective.
Jupiter’s close contact to the Sun can give a
religious tone to the person, and does so in
this case. First husband Tosh Angelos (1949-
1952) was said to be an atheist—causing her
more than a basic ideological challenge, even
in her early 20s. Natal Sun and Jupiter are
both in Jupiter’s watery sign of Pisces and in
Mercury-ruled Revati nakshatra. The
person’s influence can be pervasive with the
influence of water, which spreads quickly, and
of Jupiter, the largest planet and best planet
for Leo Ascendant. Her interests and con-
cerns are universal, though they tend to
focus around race.
Revati nakshatra is associated with prosper-
ity, talent in the arts, and also love of travel.
Maya Angelou traveled widely for much of
her life, starting from childhood. Travel tends
to bring benefits, as the deity Pushan rules
over Revati. Pushan is the god of safe travel
and is also the nourisher. Angelou has
always loved to cook and entertain. In 2004
she published The Welcome Table: A Lifetime
of Memories with Recipes.
From Mute to Full Moon Voice
In her book, I Know Why the Caged Bird
Sings, Angelou wrote about the most
traumatic experience in her childhood. She
was seven years old in Fall 1935 when she
was raped by her mother’s boyfriend. He
What is Jyotishastra?
Jyotishastra (Sanskrit for “science
of the stars”), also known as Vedic,
Indian, or Hindu astrology, is based
on the sidereal zodiac. The difference
between the sidereal and tropical
zodiac lies in the ayanamsha (the
difference in degrees and minutes
between 0° Aries and the point at
which the equinox actually occurs).
To calculate sidereal placements
(which are precession-corrected),
subtract the appropriate ayanamsha
for the birth date in question from the
tropical positions. There are several
different ayanamshas used in India
but the one employed here is the
Lahiri ayanamsha, which at present is
approximately 24° 4’. On the day of
Maya Angelou’s birth, the ayanam-
sha was 22° 51’.
Vedic astrology employs a whole
sign house system, whereby each
house is comprised of an entire sign
beginning with the Ascendant. In
Maya Angelou’s natal chart, sidereal
Leo is the Ascendant, which means
the 1st house consists of the entire
sign of Leo (and any planets in that
sign), the 2nd house consists of Virgo,
the 3rd sign consists of Libra, etc.
To read the North Indian-style chart (see
right charts), follow the signs-houses
of the chart by starting with the Leo
Ascendant (top central box marked with
a “5” for the 5th sign) and proceeding
counterclockwise. The houses are
always in the same positions, but the
signs contained therein vary depending
on the rising sign. To read the South
Indian-style chart (see left charts), in
which the signs are always in the same
positions, proceed clockwise from
Aries, which is the 2nd sign-house from
the upper left box. The Ascendant is
marked by placing a diagonal through it.
Traditional rulerships are used in Indian
astrology so that Mars rules Scorpio,
Jupiter rules Pisces, and Saturn rules
Aquarius; Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto
are not used in classical Indian astrol-
ogy. Rahu is the North Node, and Ketu
is the South Node. Aspects are different
than in Western astrology, and Yogas,
special planetary combinations, are an
important feature. In a sidereal chart,
exact timing of transits may differ
slightly from a tropical chart.- Ed.

threatened her not to tell anyone, and
when she did tell her brother a few days
later, her uncles then kicked the man to
death. Maya’s guilt was severe over
having spoken and thus in her own mind
causing his murder. She went into a self-
imposed mute state for the next 5 ½ years,
later describing it as horror at the negative
power of her own speech.
Her Full Moon in the 2nd house of speech
makes all 2nd house matters more emo-
tional. As lord of the 12th house of loss,
Moon can bring a sense of loss initially,
leading later to Moksha, or spiritual
liberation—which is the more evolved
meaning of the 12th house.
She was in Moon Dasha the first three
years of her life. At the start of the 7-year
Mars Dasha, her parents split up, greatly
destabilizing the family. The rape occurred
during Mars-Mercury Dasha/Bhukti.
(Together Mars-Mercury can mean strong
speech, or violence through speech or
communications.) Both planets reside in
Aquarius in the 7th house of the birth
chart, though 22 ½° apart. Natal Mars is
very close to setting in the chart…giving
Mars a strong influence. And even
though a friend to the Ascendant lord
Sun, as it rules good houses (4 and 9), and
brings closeness to brothers, Mars can
still be dangerous as a violent and
aggressive force. This is especially true
during its own Dasha, as this Mars is
strong in its own nakshatra Dhanishta
and in its own sign of Scorpio in the
Navamsha 8th house.
Transits of classic malefic planets such as
Mars and Saturn to her Ascendant and-or
Ascendant lord Sun will identify critical
time periods within potentially trouble-
some Dashas, when extra precautions can
be taken in advance. We should be able to
see a confluence of such factors showing
physical danger, confirming the impact of
the Mars Dasha and its timing. It occurred
October 19, 1935 for the next seven weeks.
Crucial to the timing of her mute period
was the passage of transiting Saturn in
Aquarius (December 7, 1934 to February
25, 1937); in Pisces (Febrruary. 26, 1937 to
April 28, 1939); and in Aries (April 28, 1939
to June 18, 1941).
Successively, these refer to transiting
Saturn in her 7th house, aspecting her
Ascendant and
three planets in
Aquarius: Mars,
Mercury, and
Venus. (Mercury
is a karaka for
voice, aspected
by Dasha lord
Mars, as is Moon
in the 2nd house
of speech.)
Transiting Saturn
in Pisces is
doubly difficult as
it is not only
opposite the
Moon and
afflicting the Full
Moon axis, but in
the 8th house
from the Ascen-
dant. (Ashtama
Shani is the most
difficult transit of
Saturn, being 8th
house from natal
Ascendant or
natal Moon.) Next
is transiting
Saturn in Aries in
the 8th house
from natal Moon
in Virgo. Thus we have three successive
Saturn transits, the latter two in particu-
lar—that are extremely challenging in an
already demanding Dasha, and to a very
emotional Moon.
She remained mute by choice for the re-
mainder of the 7-year Mars Dasha. Mars
has the capacity to heat or cut. From the
natal 7th house in Aquarius, natal Mars
aspects the 2nd house of speech. (Mars
aspects houses 4, 7 and 8 from itself and
impacts planets in the same house.) Mars
contacts Mercury, planet of speech, and
aspects Moon, planet of emotions placed
in the 2nd house of speech and kutumba
(family happiness). Thus, though her
muteness was self-imposed, during its
own Dasha Mars cut off her speech. This
Mars has raw power and had a visceral
effect on her speech, although at least she
did not stop eating—another 2nd house
activity. Mars can give incisiveness to
the speech, galvanizing it, as it did in later
years after this initial childhood trauma.
Fortunately, Jupiter provides some
measure of physical protection, as natal
Jupiter is closely conjunct natal Sun and
in Mercury’s nakshatra. Both of these
are benefic planets to the chart, and
Jupiter is best friend to the Sun. As Nadi
yogakaraka, Jupiter is the best planet for
Leo Ascendant chart. Jupiter gains by
being in its own sign, but is weakened and
also exaggerated by being severely
combust the Sun, within 1° 19.’ (This may
have contributed to her concern for the
fate of her rapist, at her own expense.)
Thus, the two luminaries Sun and Moon
are aspected by the best planet for the
chart. Jupiter is also the 8th lord in its
own house. The most difficult houses are
6, 8, and 12, and the 8th lord brings
Moksha concerns directly to that indi-
vidual, insuring that they will learn about
the spirit through loss and suffering.
Suffering is a special domain of the 8th
house, and can come from Jupiter (as 8th
lord) aspecting Sun and Moon. The
safety net comes with the Viparita Sarala
page 4
Raja yoga, since 8th lord Jupiter resides in
its own house, and so protects the affairs of
its own house. Whatever physically menac-
ing situations she encounters, especially
during Mars Dasha, her spiritual awareness
is likely to be raised up to new levels.
We have established the benefits of the
Full Moon in this chart. Even so, there is
always some inherent danger or voltage
attached to the quality or content of her
speech, as Ascendant lord Sun is contact-
ing both the 8th and the 12th lords, Jupiter
and Moon, respectively. But the greatest
difficulties came during Mars Dasha (Nov-
ember 1931-November 1938). She started
speaking again when she was almost 13,
several years into Rahu Dasha. It was
Rahu-Rahu period (November 19, 1938-
August 1, 1941). As it is a worldly planet,
Rahu tends to bring one out into the world.
In Angelou’s case, natal Rahu is also in
the most visible house, the 10th house, in
Taurus, the sign of artistic and sociable
Venus, and in the nakshatra of Rohini,
owned by the Moon, which in turn is
located in the 2nd house of speech. As
the Jiva (life force) for Rahu and the
Moon itself, Moon is drawing our
attention back to 2nd house matters, such
as speech. The floodgates of her own
verbal expression were about to open.
Rahu Dasha brought her first flowering as
an artist and as a woman. She had a child
in 1944, married in 1949—the first of three
brief marriages, and started performing in
nightclubs in the early 1950s.
Prodigious Vitality and Versatility
Jupiter is responsible for many noble
attributes in this chart. As the planet of
abundance, it also gives a large appetite
for life when it aspects the Ascendant lord,
and in this case both luminaries: Sun and
Moon, which are both planetary friends of
Jupiter. In addition, when many key planets
are in dual (mutable-Ed.) signs in both birth
chart and Navamsha chart, this yields
tremendous range, as planets in dual signs
give the greatest versatility.
Mercury and Jupiter rule over the dual
signs: Gemini and Virgo (Mercury), Sagit-
tarius and Pisces (Jupiter). Mercury and
Jupiter also connect through a powerful
Nadi yoga (exchange of nakshatra lords)
in this chart. Sun, Moon, and Jupiter are in
dual signs in the birth chart, and five
planets are in dual signs in
the Navamsha, amplifying
the versatility and change-
ability: Moon, Mercury,
Venus, Rahu, and Ketu.
Navamsha Moon is not
easily placed in Gemini along
with Mercury-Venus-Rahu
opposite Ketu. Moon’s
influence is always fluctuat-
ing in any case, but even
more so in a dual sign with
contacts from five other
planets, including Mars.
Thus, versatility can come at
an emotional price. The
Venus-Rahu-Ketu combina-
tion has yielded a colorful if
somewhat unstable love life,
and an artistic style that is
also unique and exotic (Rahu
and Ketu influence.) So
much Gemini impact in the
Navamsha chart has given
her the ease of being
accessible. The 3rd house is
associated with music,
drama, and dance, but also
with courage. Personal courage is
another major theme of Maya
Angelou, not just to overcome obstacles,
but courage to become who you must be:
an enduring Leo theme.
We know matters of speech and communi-
cation will be pivotal in the life. Not only
is the Full Moon in the 2nd house of
speech, strong in its own nakshatra of
Hasta and in Mercury’s sign, but also
Mercury, planet of communications, is the
Jiva (or life force) for the Ascendant lord
Sun. This is because the Sun—as well as
Jupiter, Saturn and Ketu—resides in
Mercury’s nakshatra Revati. Thus, Mer-
cury plays a key role in the life, including
financially, as 2nd and 11th lords.
The close connection of Mercury and
Jupiter to each other and to the Ascendant
lord Sun tends to promote an outpouring
of speech and language. With Mercury in
air signs in both the birth chart and
Navamsha chart, the intelligence is
quickened, giving her an eagerness to
learn. This applies also to learning other
languages, as she speaks six languages.
Even with a formal education that ended
with high school, she has received over 50
honorary degrees, and was offered several
professorships. Not knowing what the
limits of her learning were supposed to be,
her appetite for learning knew no bounds.
This is the Jupiterian emphasis, as Jupiter
expands whatever it touches. Jupiter also
aspects the 4th house of higher academic
degrees in both the birth and Navamsha
charts, overriding other contra-indicators.
What especially captures our attention is
that after being mute for 5 ½ years in her
childhood, Maya Angelou went on to be
so stunningly prolific and in so many
artistic arenas. Being prolific with words
often comes when natal Jupiter, planet of
abundance, aspects natal Mercury, planet
of speech, or when they are interacting in
some important way—as in this case, with
the Nadi yoga between Mercury and
Jupiter.
We know the mute state could not have
happened during Jupiter or Mercury
Dashas, as their close association assures
a vibrant profusion of communications.
Several other factors helped to break her
silence: the onset of her Rahu Dasha, and
page 5
the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction February
1941 in Aries in her 9th house (of bhagya,
good fortune, and of higher learning).
The condition of natal Mercury is of
course pivotal for a writer, actress, perfor-
mer, or commentator. In her case, the pro-
minence of her natal Mercury, Venus, and
Mars in an angular house in Aquarius—
the most idealistic of all the signs—gives
her fluidity of the mind and the intellect.
Natal Moon in Mercury’s sign of Virgo
benefits from Mercury’s mental agility and
cleverness. Also, Mercury has the chance
of becoming stronger over the years, due
to its importance in her lifetime Dasha
sequence. It was only 14 months into the
17-year Mercury Dasha that Maya
Angelou delivered her poem at President
Bill Clinton’s Inaugural January 20, 1993.
Though she was already known to many
in the United States, especially in the film/
entertainment and civil rights worlds, this
occasion put her solidly onto the world
stage, where she has been every since.
Her Mercury Dasha ran from November
24, 1991 to November 23, 2008.
Often referred to as “America’s Renais-
sance Woman,” she has done a lot both in
the fields of education and the arts. She is
a very international person (another
Jupiter trait)—not only through her
residence and friendships abroad—but
through her multi-lingual capacities and
her philosophical and ethical sensibilities.
She was a spokesperson for two major
Civil Rights leaders, both ministers
[Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King],
during her Jupiter Dasha (November 1956-
November 1972), and they were each
assassinated: in 1965 and 1968, respec-
tively. Since her Navamsha Jupiter is
debilitated in Capricorn, we know that if
and when she gains status, she gains it
through or in spite of initial
disadvantage(s).
Her most significant literary and spoken
output is bound to be from the onset of
Dashas involving Mercury: either Mer-
cury itself, or Mercury as nakshatra
lord—which gives even more subtle
power as Jiva than as sign lord. This
began with the 16-year Jupiter Dasha in
November 1956, and has continued
unabated with the subsequent Saturn
Dasha (1972-1991), Mercury Dasha (1991-
2008), and Ketu Dasha (2008-2015). Even
Venus Dasha (2015-2035) is rich with
Mercury’s influence.
The Preacher Within a
Combust JupiterMaya Angelou has always considered
herself “a very religious person,” aware of
what she calls “the constant, unwavering,
unrelenting presence of God.” In her birth
chart, Ascendant lord Sun is in Pisces,
closely bound with the religious concerns of
Jupiter. Sun and Jupiter are in the 8th house,
where things tend to be hidden or below the
surface. The planets are in a very tight
conjunction and Jupiter is combust.
When a planet is combust, we cannot see it
in the heavens with the naked eye, as it is
too close to the Sun. Therefore, as in life, we
are not always sure it is there. We tend to
emphasize and exaggerate it in various ways
to make ourselves believe it is really there.
In such a way the themes represented by
a combust planet can become almost as if
scorched, they are so hot! This condition
of Jupiter both enlivens all of Jupiter’s
characteristics and tends to burn them out
periodically. There is an enormous sense
of curiosity about the world and with
fewer limits on the explorations, it can be
exhausting. Jupiter close to her Ascen-
dant lord Sun also gives size as well as
largesse. Angelou is over six feet tall, with
a towering personality and a full rich
voice. Initially active as a dancer, singer
and actress, she later became a poet,
novelist and social commentator. Martin
Luther King, Jr. strongly influenced the
rhythm and content of her speech, as she
comments below:
The music of the “I Have a Dream”
speech is a replication of the music
which comes out of the mouths of the
African American preacher, singer,
blues singer, jazz singer, rap person. It
is so catching, so hypnotic, so wonder-
ful that, as a poet, I continue to try to
catch it, to catch the music. If I can catch
the music and have the content as well,
then I have the ear of the public. And I
know that is what Martin Luther King
was able to do, not just in the “I Have a
Dream” speech—although that has be-
come a kind of poem which is used
around the world—but in everything he
said there was the black Southern
Baptist or Methodist preacher, singing
his song, telling our story—not just
black American story either, but telling
the human story. And as a poet, if I can
replicate that, I am okay, Jack.
Maya Angelou
With both natal Jupiter (classic planet of
Dharma) and natal Saturn (classic planet
of Karma) in watery signs in the birth
chart, there is greater likelihood that
artistic expression would be her vehicle to
both teach and entertain. They are
inextricable in her case, and linked most
often with themes of social justice,
including civil rights. Water placements
are more emotional and tend to drive the
artistic process. Dr. King had natal Jupiter
and Saturn in fire signs with Jupiter on the
Ascendant, making religion or law
inevitable for him. But even with her
emphasis on civil rights, Maya Angelou is
quick to move to the larger and more
Jupiterian context. On race, she says the
following:
When we talk about racism, we have to
see that we are not just talking about
acts against blacks, we are talking
about vulgarities against any human
being because of her— his— race. This
is vulgar. That is what it is, whether it is
anti-Asian, whether it is the use of racial
prejudices about Jews, about Japanese,
about Native Americans, about blacks,
about Irish, it is stupid, because what it
is really is it is poison. It poisons the
spirit, the human spirit.

Dear Members,
Visit us at www.geocosmic.org, on Facebook (NCGR2013), and on Twitter (Twitter@geoalchemy).
FIRST AND FOREMOST, my great apologies to all those new and renewedmembers who registered online since International Astrology Day. Youwere promised an MP3 of Jim Lewis’s lecture on Astro*Carto*Graphy in
celebration of IAD and did not receive it yet.
In true Aries fashion, the announcement went out before the link was set up onour website, assuming the link could be made with no problem. And instead weran into technical difficulties, family responsibilities, and astrological weatherthat was “interesting” in that Chinese kind of way.
Rest assured, we will certainly make good on our promise and those of you whojoin or renew online (only) between March 20 and June 22 will eventually receivethe link to this wonderful presentation by Jim. And speaking of wonderful presentations, just a reminder of our new onlineeducation program in, not one, but two—count—‘em, two, languages! MeiraEpstein is launching the next round of Level I studies in English. So far, studentshave greatly benefited from Meira’s superb teaching skills. (No surprise to me.Meira has been on the faculty of NCGR-NYC with me for a long time!)
Mónica Escalante, another fine teacher with many certified astrologers in herstudent base, is beginning our online series in Spanish for our many, many astro-friends in Spanish-speaking countries. Soon, NCGR should really re-brand asiNCGR! Details of both of these series are in this issue of memberletter (see p. 10).
Finally, it is the mission of NCGR to provide astrological education and researchand to do so ethically. Technically, it is not our jurisdiction to provideprofessional astrological practice. That’s the task of our sister organization,NCGR-PAA. So, this next comment of mine may be unnecessary on the part ofNCGR. Nevertheless, I feel it would be irresponsible of me as Chair of one of themost important astrological organizations to ignore the irresponsible astrologicalcomments on the internet during the frenzy of the Grand Cardinal Cross.
I wish I had a penny for every client of mine who contacted me in April with fear, anxiety, and distress about the effects of this configuration on them and on theworld. Again and again, I had to say relax, chill out, and don’t worry aboutanything. Unless you were born that week, I don’t think it would mean anythingto get up about.
True, some astrologers did some very interesting research on the history of othersuch configurations and others did a nice job of commenting on the evolution ofconsciousness that we are experiencing in the years of the square of Uranus andPluto and not in just a single week.
However, most others were spreading nothing but fear-based, negative, hair-raising comments, which any worthwhile astrologer would also just see as beingridiculous, not to mention, unnecessary. Such Cassandra-like astrology either
page 7
makes us a joke to the public, or itsends very vulnerable and innocentpeople looking for meaning down arabbit hole.
Was April an intense month? Ofcourse, it was! We experienced twoeclipses and one of them coincidedwith the station of Pluto. But there areeclipses every five-and-a-half monthsand they don’t bring the end of theworld every time they happen. Morethan that, they are purposeful.
Half-baked astrology, the ease of theinternet and a few too many lonelySaturday nights for astrologers are nota good combination.
Of course, we have free speech and Iencourage the use of it. I alsoencourage that we use free speechresponsibly and realize that are ourinternet conversations are going to beread, not just by other astrologers, butalso by the public, skeptics andinnocents alike. And if you’re going tomake predictions based on astrology, please let the public know the purposeof the predicted event, and not justspread some vague dread of the future.
Astrology is a gift to us. And it is bestto use gifts wisely, sensibly, andresponsibly.

Mental Agility
An active brain is key to maintain
ing an agile mind. Lucky for us that
NCGR encourages astrologers to be
come adept at calculating charts:
natal charts, secondary progres-
sions, solar arc directions, solar
returns, charts for anytime and
anywhere. Once you learn to set them
up, they’ll serve as great exercises
for your grey matter. Then when your
hair has gone grey you can sit for 20
minutes a day setting up a chart to
make sure your brain functioning
stays fresh. This is one more ben efit
you’ll get from certification.

DO YOU WANT TO BE AN ACTIVE
influence in the National NCGR
organization? Do you know
someone in your community who is an
effective worker? Now is the time to
nominate yourself or someone else for the
National NCGR board. Nominating some-
one or running for the Board yourself is a
great opportunity to influence NCGR’s
direction, and increase your exposure in
the astrology community. Even if you
don’t win the election, additional appoint-
ments to the board are often selected from
the names of nominees.
Two positions, Clerk and Director, are
open for election. Incumbents are Joyce
Levine, Clerk, and Judy Johnson, Director.
Each elected board member serves a three-
year term to start January 2015. Responsi-
bilities for each office as listed in the
NCGR bylaws on geocosmic.org are below
along with directions on how to nominate.
How to Nominate a CandidateCandidates are required to be NCGR mem-
bers. Potential candidates must obtain the
names of 10 NCGR members who support
their nomination. Chapter or SIG presi-
dents can nominate on behalf of their
group, in which case 10 names are not
required. If you are nominating a person
other than yourself, please make sure that
person is willing to run. Each candidate
will then be asked to submit a biography
and election statement, consisting of what
he or she would like to accomplish in that
position, totaling no more than 400 words.
This statement will appear on the ballot
and in the November-December
memberletter. The nomination materials
must be sent to me by October 1, 2014.
Duties of the Clerk a. Acting as the recording secretary at all
regular and elective Board meetings.
b. Keeping accurate records of the
minutes of such meetings during his or
her term of office.

SUNDAY, APRIL 27, 2014 MARKED THE
canonization (glorifying a person to
sainthood in the Roman Catholic
Church) of two popular past Popes, John
XXIII and John Paul II. Pope Francis I, a
rather popular Pope himself, led the rituals
involved with affirming permanent
sainthood status recognized by the
church authority. Of no surprise in the
transits on the day of the canonizations
was Neptune in his dominion, Pisces,
stealing the planetary show.
Viewing the cosmic dance of the transits
at the moment of John Paul II’s death, and
contrasting it with the moment that the
canonization mass started, shows remark-
able placements that exhibit Uranus’ and
Neptune’s influences in the charts on
those days. The authority and discipline
of John Paul II, in the figurehead of the
Papal office—a very Saturnine function—
was eventually usurped by Uranus’
disruption and the passing of a Pope.
Neptune’s position in the zodiac in 2005
and then in 2014 symbolizes John Paul II’s
death, then quick canonization.
Ultimately, as the planet outside both
Saturn’s and Uranus’ orbits, Neptune
shows how his memory and spirit tran-
scend the sorrow of his loss, and embod-
ies the symbol of Catholicism, now in
dominion.
Venus and her spiritual teacher, Neptune,
are very important planets in the canoniza-
tion event. Indeed, all roads in the transits
lead to Neptune in his dominion, with the
exception of Saturn and Pluto in each
other’s signs. Venus exhibits a spiritual,
watery, transcending quality in her sign of
exaltation, and she’s in Neptune’s home
sign. Venus is also at the midpoint of the
Moon-Uranus conjunction at 12°-13° Aries
and Neptune at 7° Pisces. The exaltation
of the feminine Venus in the sign of the
Roman Catholic Church is at the intersec-
tion of not only another feminine planet,

the Moon, but also the Uranus and
Neptune pair. So it appears the heavens
are telling us that the disruption (Uranus)
that occurred from John Paul II’s death
(the former Pope symbolized by Neptune),
is resolved from the church’s viewpoint
with the blessing of the beauty, grace, and
balance of Venus in her exaltation.
Further extensions of this symbolism are
easy to intuit, and are also a bit uncanny.
Compared to the death chart, Neptune at
7° Pisces has replaced Uranus at 8°
Pisces, and the Moon-Uranus conjunction
has replaced the Sun-Venus conjunction,
almost to the exact degrees, and Juno, one
of the four asteroid ladies, has been
replaced by Venus, again almost to the
degree. Uranus and Neptune in each
other’s signs (Neptune in Aquarius, the
disruptive loss of the long standing Pope;
Uranus in Pisces, an upheaval in the
Catholic church), have reverted in the
event chart to having settled matters
ultimately to Neptune.
Neptune in his home sign symbolizes how
the church is consolidating its authority,
settles the disruption associated with
Uranus and the Aquarius sign, and unifies
the greater fragments of the faithful all
over the world through a public, monu-
mental occasion of transforming two
influential, beloved Popes into saints.
The hypothetical transneptunians
continue to tell the story of the rectifica-
tion of sorts, by the church making the
two Popes saints. Based on a very
accurate time of death, Poseidon (spiritu-
ality) in Scorpio was in the mundane 12th
house, associated with Neptune, closely
conjunct the Ascendant at 7° Scorpio
(death). Hades, often a strong significator
of death when he is prominent in the
transits, aspects Moon in Capricorn
(calling attention to Saturn opposite
Moon by sign and aspect; Saturn, Moon,
and Moon’s nodes also form a tight grand
cross pattern), the karmic axis (reiterating
Moon and Saturn, and fate), and Admetos
(earth, matter, the corporal body).
The gravitational axis forms a double
mystic rectangle with Sun-Venus and
Jupiter (and Neptune, if one cares to
stretch the orbs of the aspects). So while
some harsh indicators of death were
present in the chart, a very spiritual
window seemed to be open in the heavens
when John Paul II died.
Based on an accurate event time when
Pope John Paul I was canonized on April
27, the Cancer Ascendant is still in a
watery sign, but the chart ruler shifts from
Pluto in the death chart to Moon in the
canonization chart. Kronos (highest auth-
ority) in the 12th house in Cancer bestows
tension on the Ascendant, symbolic of the
ascension of John Paul II to the highest
status that can be granted to someone by
the church. Kronos also makes an almost
perfect trine to Neptune, directly showing
the church’s full blessing on the elevation
of John Paul II to sainthood.
Neptune widely conjoins Chiron, but more
importantly, Chiron is in the 9th house
closely conjunct the Midheaven. Will the
canonization of two former Popes help to
heal (Chiron) the church’s public
(Midheaven) wounds? Do the canoniza-
tions reenergize the faithful and help them
move on from the scandals of recent
decades? The power of Neptune in his
dominion and Venus in her exaltation
certainly raise those questions in a
powerful way, as Chiron and Midheaven
in the event chart are rather close to the
Venus-Neptune midpoint. No doubt that
the double cardinal grand cross also
symbolized the canonization event as
another assertion by Francis I of his
power and public authority (Saturn in
Scorpio, Pluto in Capricorn).
Uranus and Neptune interacting in the two
charts also exemplify the struggles that will
continue as we slowly shift from the Age of
Pisces to the Age of Aquarius. It appears the
Pope and episcopate are determined to
persist with the status quo—and Neptune
trumps Uranus for now.
MICHAEL R. SVEHLA M.A. began
studying astrology in late 2006 when
transiting Jupiter in Scorpio conjoined
his Sun-Moon midpoint. The name for his
astrology practice is derived from his
Ascendant and luminaries in each of the
water signs. Mike also enjoys using the
eight hypothetical transneptunians and
he is planning on becoming a full-time
practicing astrologer. He can be reached

PAST LIVES ARE SO REVEALING OF THE
present problems and challenges.
An acquaintance, who we will call
John Doe, while being regressed, viewed a
scene of a former life: He was seated at the
dinner table with his wife and children. In
the next scene, he shot his wife. Later he
was executed and experienced great
remorse. In this life he yearned for a
meaningful relationship. He has no
children.
John Doe was born on September 18,
1946, at 11:30 PM CDT, 90W12, 38N37.
The first thing that I noticed in his chart,
was his Sun, and ruler of the Ascendant,
Mercury, squared the Ascendant. This is
an aspect of self against self. The person-
ality resists the soul. The soul wants to go
in one direction and the personality has
other ideas. This is the problem of most
people whether they realize it or not. After
the unwanted, miserable, and unhappy
event occurs, we realize that we were out
of tune with the soul.
Mars trines the Ascendant, conferring
energy, self-confidence, and courage to
accomplish whatever goals are set. Jupiter
trines the Ascendant denoting that he is
ethical, intelligent, beneficent, kind, well-
educated and-or spiritually oriented. Mars-
Jupiter conjoined in the 5th house confers
energy to be artistic and-or to be creative.
Venus squares Pluto, the planet ruling
death, sex, and surgery. It suggests that in
his last life, he killed his wife, possibly
because of sex. Venus is in Scorpio, the
sign relating to sex. Saturn squares Venus.
This aspect usually indicates that in a
past life, the native was remiss and-or
controlling in his relationships. Saturn
conjunct Pluto in Leo is an aspect relating
to control and willpower. Pluto semi-
squares the Ascendant and sesquisquares
the descendant (partner). This reiterates
challenges with self and with partner.
Past Life KarmaRevealed in a Chart by Marguerite dar Boggia
Pluto co-rules the 5th
house denoting problems
with romantic attachments
and-or with children. He
has no children. Pluto also
rules the 6th house of
health. He has prostate
cancer. We cannot change
or control others; only
change ourselves. This
time he has the opportu-
nity to do better.
Gemini rising confers a
thirst for knowledge.
These people have a highly developed
learning capacity. They are articulate, well
read, and studious. They can excel in
writing. These people make good critics.
In one who is less evolved, they can be
chatterboxes and restless, moving from
one place to another.
John works as a successful writer. Saturn
sextiles Neptune ruler of the 10th house of
career, and Neptune sexiles Pluto, ruler of
the 6th house of work. A good imagination
(Neptune) is crucial to a writer.
Mercury, the Ascendant ruler, is combust
the Sun. This means that when Mercury is
½ degree to four degrees, onjoining the
Sun, the lines of thought communication
are overloaded with solar energy. The
excess energy overheats the mental
processes and a mental blind spot ensues.
They may, perhaps, adhere to a certain
passion, belief or feeling that hinders
objectivity in self-analysis. No amount of
contradictory proof will change their
opinion.
Mercury conjoins Neptune. This endows
him with inspiration and imagination
necessary for a successful writer. Mercury
being Letter No. 1 and Neptune ruling the
Midheaven, he identifies with his parent
and with his work. Mercury in the 4th
house, again reiterates that he identifies
with a parent. That parent can be a
positive or negative role model. Moon in
the 1st house again denotes that he
identifies with his mother. With Uranus
conjoining the Ascendant, he may choose
a partner, who will give him his freedom.
It may be through death, divorce, or a
separation. He does not want freedom. He
wants a loving companion. Uranus forms
a square aspect to Sun and Mercury in the
4th house of family. With Moon in Cancer
in the 1st house, his soul wants him to
have a family. With three planets in Libra,
his soul yearns for a love relationship.
When he noticed lovers in a movie
theater, he longed to be in that position.
He has a loaded 5th house. It is the house
of creativity, children and romance.
Venus disposits the planets in Libra
(Neptune, Mars and Jupiter) and Mars
disposits Venus in Scorpio. Mars and
Venus are in mutual reception, but Mars
can’t help Venus which is in its detriment,
to achieve a loving relationship, as Mars
also is in its detriment in the sign of Libra.
In addition, Venus sesquisquares the
Ascendant. He is overly sensitive and has
difficulties with his spouse relating to sex.
It is the mind that must control the

Who will win the 2014 Super Bowl?
SPORTS ASTROLOGY IS AN INTERESTING
niche in theworld of predictive
astrology. It is tempting to think
one could predict the outcome for major
sports matches. I use a method devel-
oped by John Frawley in his book Sports
Astrology on the subject. Frawley himself
says the method works pretty well, but
that in our imperfect world, nothing works
all of the time.
Given that I live in Washington State, which
has never had a Super Bowl victory, I
thought this Super Bowl offered a worth-
while test of the method. To provide a lit-tle
extra fillip to the reading, and to get reality
checks from the resident sports fans, I
decided to share my prediction with The
Real Astrology mailing list before the game.

emotions and ancient habits from past
lives. Planets in Libra, an air sign, confer
diplomacy, cooperation, tact, culture,
fairness, ability to mediate, charm,
objectivity, detachment. It is the sign of
the balance. The personality and the soul
will eventually be balanced. Today the
positive personality overpowers the
negative polarity of the soul.
Moon is strong in its own sign, Cancer. It is
in the 1st house. He wants to be a parent, to
be nurturing, caring and to have a family. It
trines Venus. Love is important to him.
Moon trines the MC. He had good relations
with one parent (MC). Moon squares Mer-
cury, the ruler of the 4th house of family. He
may have karma to undo with the other
parent (IC). Moon squares Neptune. This
confers some psychic tendencies. He may
be overly sensitive. He may see himself as
mentally and-or spiritually superior to others
or to his Mother.
At a certain point in our development we
become aware of duality. One voice within
us suggests one thing and the other voice
rejects it. This is when we become aware
of the battle between the personality and
the soul. We are, at our stage of evolu-
tion, working out past karma, through
accidents, illness and/or disease. When
you hate enough to injure or kill, you have
created real bad karma. Karma is the Law
of the working of Cause and Effect. We
have free choice as to our thoughts,
emotions and our actions. John Doe
developed prostate cancer and had
surgery. Saturn and Pluto rule the 8th
house of surgery. They throw an aspect of
a square on Venus. Venus rules the 12th
house of self-undoing.
The following is from Wisdom of the
Mystic Masters, by Joseph J. Weed.
“The most persistent and lasting karma
comes from the thought forms that have
been energized by your will. The great
oriental Teacher, K.H. has described this
as follows: ‘Every thought of man upon
being evolved passes into the inner
world and becomes an active entity by
associating itself, coalescing we might
term it, with an elemental—that is to say
with one of the semi-intelligent forces of
the more subtle kingdoms of matter. It
survives as an active intelligence—a
creature of the mind’s begetting—for a
longer or shorter period proportionate
with the original intensity of the cerebral
action which generated it. Thus a good
thought is perpetuated as an active, be-
neficent power, an evil one as a malefi-
cent demon. . . .’ ”
“...It is this cloud of self-created, ener-
getic beings, elementals so to speak, ex-
isting in the finer grades of matter and
hovering about you, that creates your
karma. These active entities are respon-
sible for what you know as sensation.”
(Joseph J. Weed, Wisdom of the Mystic
Masters, Parker Publishing Co. 1968, p. 11)
By some coincidence, 15 years later I met his
wife. She told me that she was divorcing
John Doe after two years of marriage. He
still had the same problem relating to sex.
Today, in 2014, he receivesprofessonal help.
From his chart, I suspect he will marry
again. The eclipse of November 3, 2013
occurred on his Venus. He is a beautiful
and talented soul.

A few days before the Super Bowl, once it
was clear the date (February 2, 2014)
would not be changed due to weather, I
examined the event chart for the kick-off.
It was what I would call a “quiet” horo-
scope: not much happening. The Denver
Broncos were the clear favorite for the
game; outside of Washington State, I
knew few people who had bet on the
Seattle Seahawks to win.
Following this, we assign the Ascendant to
the favorites (Denver), and the 7th house to
the underdogs (Seattle). The ruler of the 7th
house, Saturn, was on the 4th house cusp, a
slightly strengthening testimony for Seattle,
as the 4th house is a secondary indicator for
the underdogs. Still, it’s hardly overwhelm-
ing evidence for a Seattle win.
The Part of Fortune, known as Fortuna, is
another indicator for the favorites, and I

saw that Pluto was opposite it, another hint of trouble for the
favorites. For those who use a fixed formula for the Part of
Fortune, rather than change it in day and night charts, Uranus
opposed fixed Fortuna at 12° Libra. Pluto conjoined fixed
Fortuna’s dispositor, Venus. Regardless of one’s preferred
method of calculating Fortuna, there are malefic influences being
pointed toward the favorites in this chart.
Still, none of these testimonies provide a slam-dunk testimony
for either team. Based on a 6:30 PM kick-off time, I predicted
Seattle to probably win, but I wasn’t 100% convinced. As I
examined the horoscope, I realized a major question mark was
staring me in the face: the Ascendant was 29° Leo 35’, so even a
few minutes’ delay in the kick-off would change the Ascendant
to Virgo, and thus the entire tenor of the game.
With Virgo rising, the ruling planet of the favorites would now be
Mercury, which was securely placed in the 7th house.
Denver would be entirely in Seattle’s clutches, and the game
would definitely go to the Seahawks. Checking the exact time, I
bracketed the optimal kick-off time as 6:33-6:42 PM.
Too soon, and the Ascendant would be in Leo, with its mild
testimony for Seattle. Too late, and Mercury would sit just
outside the 7th house cusp, controlling the underdog, instead of
being controlled by it when inside the 7th.
The actual kick-off happened at 6:34 pm, and we all know what
happened next. Denver’s playing could have been described as
half-hearted at best, the Broncos watching as though turned to
stone as the Seahawks steamrolled over them. What a difference
four minutes made.

Global Gatherings: Astrology in Austria by Lynn Koiner
This column focuses on Lynn Koiner’s
international travels, which will include
interviews with international astrolo-
gers. In this article, Lynn educates us
about the history of astrology in Austria,
adapted from an interview with Ingrid
Petroff, a member of the NCGR Advisory
Board, from Vienna, Austria.
ON SEPTEMBER 24, 2008, in Vienna(Wien) Austria, the AustrianAstrological Association cel-
ebrated its 100th anniversary, making theÖAG (Österreichische AstrologischeGesellschaft) the oldest public astrologi-cal society in the world.
The key here is the word public. Forcenturies, private groups of astrologerswould gather to share their knowledgewith other professionals but this organiza-tion was the first to be open to all whowished to study and share knowledge ofastrology.
The current president, Brigitte Strobele, has extensively researched the foundationof other public astrological organizationsand she is assured that it is officially theoldest astrological organization which isopen to the public.
The history of astrology in any country isa rich history of the culture and politicaltemperament of that country. In the UnitedStates, the First Amendment of our Con-stitution, established in 1776, guaranteesthat “Congress shall make no law respect-ing an establishment of religion, or prohi-biting the free exercise thereof; or abridg-ing the freedom of speech, or of the press;or the right of the people peaceably toassemble…” It is difficult for us to imagineastrology under the influence of a monar-chy, the Nazis and even communism.
With the globalization of informationthrough the internet, astrology is cur-rently experiencing a great Renaissancewith the free exchange of ideas andinformation. There are many astrologicalwebsites that offer free chart calculations,
free articles and lessons on astrologicalsubjects and now, through Skype, we canstudy and have readings with astrologersliving anywhere in the world.
The history of the ÖAG tells a great storyabout astrology under the Hapsburgmonarchy, the Nazis, and finally in ademocracy. It is an organization that hasdedicated itself to the preservation ofastrological writings from the past andbridging these will the new classicaltechniques.
In 1905, Karl Brandler-Pracht (see chart
on p. 15) founded an organization thatwould eventually evolve into the Aus-trian Astrological Association.
At this time in Germany and Austria, there were no astrological textbooks forthose who were interested in this subject. The tools of astrology, such as ephemeri-des and the table of houses had to beprocured from other countries. Karl
Bradler-Pracht changed all of this when hepublished his first astrological textbookMathematics and Instructive Textbook of
Astrology in Leipzig. This was the firstbook published in German, not Latin, sothat all could read the material. This bookis the basis of the teachings for the ÖAG.
His greatest contribution to astrology inAustria was through his collection ofastrological articles, lectures and journalswhich were published in 1910 in anexcellent book series, Astrological
Library, and in 1914, a journal entitledAstrological Leaves. In 1918, he publisheda six-volume textbook series, Astrological
Collection For Self-Study which sold165,000 copies! He not only madeastrologically socially acceptable but helaid the foundation for a continuingastrological movement in Germany andAustria.
He brought together many systems oftraditional techniques with very specific

rules for interpretations which gaveastrologers the basic tools for theirpractice. This allowed the individualastrologers the freedom to cultivate theirown personal techniques, using diversemethods. Besides his annual forecasts, heworked with mundane astrology, thehoroscopes of the monarchs, the sinkingof the Titanic and he translated the 100
Rules of Ptolemy.
In Vienna, in 1908, he established the FirstAstrological Society of Vienna. Becausehis career was actually as an actor/comedian, he was able to travel aroundthe world, especially to the United States, where he established private astrologygroups to promote astrology. As anastronomer, he insisted upon accurateastronomical data for astrology. Today, heis considered the Father of ModernAstrology in Austria.
The first lecture at the AstrologicalSociety was given by Julius Nestler, aprofessor from Prague, who lectured on“The Lost City of Atlantis in Light ofModern Science.” His second lecturegiven the next day was, “The History ofthe Astrologer.” It should be rememberedthat Prague was the seat of Europe’sfinest astrologers. Under Rudolf II,astrology and the occult sciences flour-ished. It was held at Palaise Eschenbach,a small palace not used by the king.
Astrological societies and all organiza-tions in Austria, up until World War I,came under the control of the Hapsburgmonarchy. Because of this, no one coulddeclare themselves president of anysociety or organization unless theybelonged to the royal family or belongedto the Hapsburg nobility. So, the positionof president was given to a nobleman,Alexander von Sauer-Csáky. Permissionto organize this society was given by thepolice on August 20 1908!
By 1909, full courses on the study ofastrology were offered by the Society. These were held in a very elegant hotel,The Klomser, which kept the membershipexclusively low. It is presently the PalaisBatthyány in the First District of Vienna. It should be noted that one of the primarybenefits of having someone from the royalfamily involved with the organization isthat they have the money and resources
to sponsor the events. The averageperson could not afford to do this. Thevice president was Baroness HeleneHamar.
In 1914, when the progressed Sun in theÖAG horoscope opposed the 11th houseSaturn, the outbreak of World War Isuspended the activities of the organiza-tion. However, when the Progressed Sunsextiled Venus in Leo, Karl Brandlerrevived the society.
On February 3, 1939, the National Socialistregime (Nazis) forced the dissolution ofthe astrological society. During the initialrise of the Nazi regime, the progressedMercury and Neptune both turnedRetrograde in this chart but, when itdisbanded for the war, the transitingNeptune was crossing the Mars-Moonconjunction, the Solar Arc Pluto squaredMercury, ruler of the Ascendant, and therewas a Progressed New Moon at 1°Scorpio.
The Countess Zoë Wassilko von Serecki(see chart on p. 16) worked tirelessly topreserve the legacy and the intellectualproperty of the organization for the
re-establishment occurred on October 17,1946, and the name was changed to theAustrian Astrological Association. Atthis time, there were 154 members. TheCountess was very wealthy and itrequired a great deal of money to supportthe organization. For decades, she hadcollected all of the organization’s astro-logical materials. This collection in itsentirety was published under the title,Astrological Wisdom.
The Countess, daughter of Count StephanWassilko, had a great interest is allmetaphysical subjects and, on December 21927, along with physicist, Hans Thirring, founded the Austrian Society for PsychicResearch. In 1919, the Parliament ofAustria passed a law doing away withnobility. However, in Germany, there is nosuch regulation. Her books were pub-lished in Germany where she was usuallyreferred to as a countess.
Under the Countess’s presidency, inMarch 1956, the ÖAG published Tradi-
tional And Progress Of Classical Astrol-
ogy. When she passed away in the 1970s,he organization found itself burdened withheavy debts. It no longer had the

NCGR VOLUNTEER
RESOURCE SURVEY
The lifeblood of any organization is
its volunteers. NCGR is creating a
database for volunteers, which will help
us find people to lend a hand as needed,
both locally and nationally. If you have
not volunteered before, be assured that
most requests are small, although im-
portant. Can you help set up chairs for a
meeting, pick up a speaker at the air-
port, or bake something yummy for the
refreshment table? Can you write an
article for the newsletter, or proofread
one? Can you collect tickets at the door,
or assist a speaker at a conference?
Can you help someone navigate the
subways or find a great local restau-
rant? If so, we need you.
Volunteering brings benefits to you as
well. I will share a secret: volunteering
is actually fun. You may have the oppor-
tunity to work with world class astrolo-
gers on an informal basis, learn new
skills that will make you a better astrolo-
ger, and create lasting relationships with
people worldwide. You will become an
integral part of NCGR and build cama-
raderie with all the other volunteers
working alongside you.
In order to create our database, we are
sending out a questionnaire so that we
can get to know you better. This will al-
low us to contact you when we need
someone with your unique skills to help
out our organization. We want to find
ways in which you can enjoy using your
talents to help our group. When the sur-
vey arrives, please fill it out promptly. Be-
come an NCGR Volunteer. We really
cannot do it without you.

However, it was not until1999 that generous donations from friendsand members of the ÖAG rescued theorganization from its greatest financialplight.

various new systems of astrology, especially the humanistic and psychologi-cal system of astrology, which seemed atvariance with the classical systems.Saturn created many disagreements anddifficulties over these various systems.
Eventually, it was decided to adhere to thefundamentals of the foundation of thesociety by its founder, Karl Brandler-Pracht—the fundamentals of classicalastrology. When Saturn began to makefavorable aspects, all of the conflicts wereresolved. Because astrology works, theBoard members of the organizationpredicted this problem and they wereprepared through astrological wisdom tomeet the challenge.
Today, the society meets every two weeksbut the topics are always based upon cla-ssical techniques. The purpose of the as-sociation is to “promote the scientific studyof astrology in Austria and to prove theusefulness of the astrological science.”

pregnant with her second child, due in
May 2014, is seeking the advice of
various professionals to—in her words—
“not to raise a jerk.” In this episode, I
played myself—a professional astrologer.
I flew out to Los Angeles to do the
filming on the late morning of March 30,
2014. Ironically, or synchronistically, the
transiting Sun-Moon conjunction at 9°
Aries at the start time of the shoot was
making an exact conjunction to my
current Solar Return chart where the
Moon and Uranus are both positioned at
9° Aries.
Filming took place in Andrea’s home.
Andrea and I sat at the kitchen table
reviewing Andrea’s chart as she asked
typical and some unusual comedic
questions about life and how it is about
to change as baby #2 enters this world.
Little Odin, Andrea’s 2 ½ year (Leo) son,
who is also a big part of the show, had his
chart reviewed as Mom wondered how he
might fare as he would no longer be the
main center of attention.
I offer a big thank you to Andrea, the
entire production crew, and the NickMom
network for making me feel so welcomed
and appreciated all for the work I LOVE
doing. After auditioning for the part, I was
cast in this role because of the amazing
connection I had with Andrea’s chart and
the fact that I too am a mom.
This episode of “Take Me To Your
Mother” is projected to air in July 2014. It
will also be available online.
Postscript
As a postscript to this article, which was
first submitted in April 2014, I was been
informed by the casting director of the
show that the producer was unable to “fit
the astrology” into this episode. However,
the producer and the entire crew, includ-
ing the NickMom network, assured me
that they loved my work on the show, as
well as everything that Andrea and I
talked about.
As a result, they have decided to create a
separate video web piece from the raw
footage that Andrea and I shot together. A
link to the video is promised to be
available on the NickMom website in July
2014. Stay tuned for the link.

Sky and Symbol: Proceedings of the Ninth
Annual Sophia Centre Conference 2011,
edited by Nicholas Campion and Liz Greene,
Sophia Centre Press, sophiacentrepress.
com, 2013. Paper. 350 pp. £25 Br.
This book consists of papers, most of
which were presented at the ninth
annual Sophia Centre Conference in
2011. The theme is celestial phenomena as
symbols in art, in psychology, in
mythological literature, in the landscape,
and more. Material spans from the ancient
world to the modern one. They are
scholarly papers, each with an abstract
and each heavily footnoted.
Now don’t let that word “scholarly” scare
you, because there are some excellent
thought-provoking discussions here,
starting with “Is Astrology A Symbolic
Language?” by Nicholas Campion. This
chapter should be must reading for anyone
who describes astrology as a symbolic
language.
As Campion makes clear, the question may
be less one of whether it is a symbolic
language than one of which symbolic
language you are looking at. He defines
Book Reviews

three—one a language of metaphor, one a
language of order, and a third more
representational one. This last one, by the
way, has strong Theosophical
underpinnings.
A chapter on the Perugia Fountain by
Darrelyn Gunzburg, at first glance didn’t
look like my cup of tea, but Gunzburg did a
masterful job of showing how this
structure linked the townspeople of
Perugia to the sky, the earth, and the
seasonal rhythms of the year. The material
is fascinating and Gunzburg has presented
it well.
Jennifer Zahrt presents an interesting view
of celestial symbolism in Weimar cinema,
including the film Golem and the Golem
myth itself. Much of this material was new
to me and again extremely interesting as
well as well-written.
And there’s more—a chapter on the
astrology of Jung’s Red Book (Liber
Novus) by Liz Greene, a chapter on art,
astronomy, and symbolism in the age of
science by Gary Wells, another by
Anthony Thorley on the origins of the
Glastonbury Landscape Zodiac, and five
more chapters. There is also a lengthy
bibliography and a very thorough index.
If you’re looking for interpretive material
and find history and/or scholarly
presentations off-putting, this may not be
the book for you. However, there’s a
wealth of wonderful information and
thought here, all meant to be savored.
Should you be lucky enough to run across
Sky and Symbol in a library or bookstore,
you may want to use care opening it—
because even if you think there’s nothing
here for you, you may find yourself unable
to put it down.
I thoroughly enjoyed most of it, despite
my initial misgivings about the format and
subject matter.

Separating Aspects: The Astrology of
Break-Ups, Divorce, and Other Partings,
by Armand Diaz, Ph.D., Integral
Transformation, LLC, IntegralAstrology.
net, 2014. Paper. 197 pp. Price not marked.
OK, let’s begin at the beginning.
This is not a book about applying
and separating aspects or even a
book about just separating aspects. It’s a
book about the astrology of break-ups,
something most of us go through and some-
thing that many clients talk about with us.
Diaz discusses various relationship
patterns as shown in the natal chart,
including complementary relationships,
supplementary relationships, catalytic
relationships, karmic relationships, and
outer planet patterns such as Saturnian
relationships (“It is what it is”). This is
followed by an extensive chapter on
timing. This covers transits, progressions,
aspects to the composite, etc.
Diaz uses quite a wide orb for the outer
planets when applying, ranging from six
degrees for Pluto to ten degrees for
Saturn, and a two degree orb for all
separating aspects from these planets. I
have run across this concept before, but
haven’t had a great deal of success in
terms of using in. I may try it again, this
time specifically in the area of
relationships.
Next you’ll find chapters on each of the
outer planets discussing the style of
change, the pitfalls and opportunities of
each transit, and things to do during the
transit. For example, Saturn transits often
indicate the need to make a difficult
decision. So what do you do? You deal
with it of course. And you try to be
patient.
Business, friendships, and family
relationships are touched on briefly. There
is also a chapter on approaches to the
astrological consultation.
No charts, no index. The latter isn’t really
necessary anyway.
Diaz writes well. He is both knowledgeable
and readable as well as being sensible in
the best possible non-judgmental way. He
makes you think without straining your
brain, and you’ll probably come away with
some new insights as a result. Separating
Aspects definitely adds to the existing
body of literature on relationship
astrology. If you’re a consulting
astrologer, you can’t go wrong with this
one. Just buy it!
Bringing Astrology Back to Basics, by
Peter Burns, Grove Publishing,
www.astrologystudies.com, 2014. Paper.
138 pp. Price not marked.
This small book contains 55 short
articles on pretty much all areas of
basic astrology plus three brief
articles on astro-palmistry. The goal is to
clarify underlying principles of astrology,
highlight some basic facets of astrology
that are often overlooked, and—above all
else to promote simplicity and logic in astro-
logy. The author is a traditional astrologer
who has studied with John Frawley.
Many of the articles here appeared on
Facebook in discussion form. Sometimes
heated discussion form because Burns is
quite passionate and quite definite in his
opinions. And why not? Judging from this
book, his techniques have served him well.
There are sections on predictions,
techniques, the planets, mundane
astrology, and more. There is also a brief
section on the houses that gives a very
thorough explanation of the 11th house
but is otherwise quite sketchy. I would
have loved to see this section expanded,
as I’ve heard Peter expound on some of
the other houses and he’s very interesting
indeed.
Among the topics discussed are whether
or not to reverse the signs for the
Southern Hemisphere, whether or not to
reverse the Part (Lot) of Fortune for night
births, and whether or not Neptune is a
benefic. (There’s actually quite a bit of
discussion on Neptune in this little book.)
There’s a good explanation of profections
and how to use them. There are half a
dozen very interesting horaries, clearly
explained, with outcomes. And there is
lots of discussion on planets and other
basic principles.
Judging from the discussions on
Facebook, it is quite possible that you will
not agree with everything Burns has to
say. Many don’t. But you’ll probably
enjoy much, if not all, of his commentary.
And if nothing else, you may be forced to
look at things from another angle.
Changing your opinion is optional, but be
prepared for a good read in any case. And
note that the size of this book and the
length of the articles makes it an ideal
waiting-room or travel companion.
Definitely worth looking at!

What do you say when
your best friend passes
away? I never in my
wildest dreams ever imagined
myself in just such a situation.
Yet, here I am. I have not only lost a significant person in my
personal life, but I feel that the world has lost a brilliant, creative
soul who was our finest astrologer. Kelly Lee Phipps was a man
of many talents and interests, a modern-day “polymath” as he
would say. While he is best known as an astrologer, he was
also a teacher, story teller, gamer, and athlete.
Kelly lived to write. His gift of communication was such that he
uplifted the reader in whatever he wrote, be it an astrology
book, a blog (Travelling Magi), or a fantasy novel
(Brazenwood). Even when he was not writing about astrology
directly, his enthusiasm for the subject was always in the
background. For instance, he had visions of expanding the
story of Brazenwood into a series of 12 books and movies, each
with an appropriate astrological undertone.
As a poet, he had an amazing memory for poems, not only for
those which he wrote himself, but also those of other poets.
Poetry was a key medium through which Kelly shared his
teachings, readings, insights, and wisdom.
Kelly’s gift of communication was not limited to writing. When
speaking to others in person, he was quite inspirational. He
knew how to incite laughter with his quick wit. As a master
storyteller, Kelly would often share engrossing experiences in
his life not only to entertain his audience, but also to subtly
motivate people to take their life to the next level by following
their passion. This message was a big theme in Kelly’s life,
given that he was a model of living authentically. He loved to
socialize with people and was always willing to help the
downtrodden in some way, even if it was only to lift their spirits.
Those who listened to his Cosmic Weather podcasts could hear
his jovial personality as he sought to educate the masses in an
entertaining and engaging manner.
As an astrologer, Kelly was able to gain a unique and profound
grasp of the subject through integrating it with his knowledge
of physics, astronomy, mathematics, mythology, linguistics,
religion and philosophy. It was this unique perspective of
astrology that played a major part in bringing us together for
the first time at the 1998 Atlanta UAC. I will always cherish the
conversations we have had since then which have included

exchanging new astrological concepts that we had developed.
Kelly was an incredible scholar. He was a voracious reader of any
book that called to him. Almost inevitably, whatever book he did
read seemed to stimulate his creativity in some fashion and help
him arrive at some new astrological insight.
His e-book, Elemental Wave, Chronicles demonstrates his
scholarliness as he describes Jupiter-Saturn cycles in the context
of world history over the last five thousand years. This book and
his other masterpiece, Celestial Renaissance, will go a long way
in showing readers that astrology is more than just a cookbook of
page 23
David LaGrone
(1939-2014)
tired predictions. It is an art form of self-
knowledge, whether the “self” is a person,
a relationship or a society.
A most prolific writer, Kelly had some
brilliant works in progress when he
passed. I and others are working on
publishing his unfinished magnum opus,
The Tao of Astrology, (which he had been
working on intensely over the last two
years), so that we all can benefit from the
creative insights that he wanted to share
with the world. Some of his students and
colleagues have already been exposed to
some of the material from this work, and
they will, no doubt, spread his message.
Another significant work that we are in
the process of publishing is his book
called The Physics of Consciousness.
Kelly’s film, The Return of the Magi, was
ground-breaking in bringing astrological
understanding to the masses. As far as I
know, he is the only person to make a
movie to educate people about what
astrology is and what it is not. In this film
he interviews many modern astrologers
for their perspective on the subject,
nestling these interviews within a
storyline that shows how astrology can
be an asset for bettering one’s life.
Even though I am still in shock over his
absence in my life, I believe that in time,
Kelly’s legacy will be noticed not only
from the profound impact he had on
clients via recorded astrological readings,
but also from the influence he had on his
students as they mature into fine astrologers
using the techniques and approaches that
he taught. Of course, as more people read
his written works, they will come to
appreciate his profound insight.
Rest in peace, my brother. You are with us
always!

Brazenwood, as well as his mother, father,
stepmother, and three brothers.

David from Vedic astrology conferences,
and for his generosity, donating money
and books to astrology organizations.
In the following tribute Joni Patry
writes about David’s gift to her, and how
it led to a journey she will never forget.
Ronnie Dreyer, memberletter Editor
Vedic astrologer David LaGrone, an
active part of the Fort Worth
astrological community, passed
away on March 16. Many years ago I
attended my first Vedic astrology class
taught by David. He was brilliant and
completely dedicated to Vedic astrology.
Over the years we remained friends. He
called me about six months ago and we
exchanged pleasantries. Then he asked if
he could put me in his will for his very
extensive collection of Vedic astrology
books and tapes. I told him I would be
honored, and then asked if there was
anything wrong. He said no not at all, he
was just putting together a will. In March,
his daughter-in-law, Deb, called me with
this message. “I am David's daughter-in-
law and I have been asked by his children
to contact you regarding the items that
David has bequeathed to you.”
I called immediately with a heavy, sad
heart but a sense of honor. We arranged to
meet at his home in Glen Rose, Texas,
which is about an hour and half drive from
where I live in Dallas. In addition to
picking up the gifts David left me, the day
that my husband and I took the delightful
drive into the heart of Texas where David
lived, became another of his extraordinary
gifts to me.
The countryside changes dramatically in
such a short distance between Dallas and
Glen Rose. David lived in the country in a
lovely oasis immersed in an intellectual
haven full of books of Eastern spiritual
philosophies. Ironically, he was in a very
conservative Texas town.
But what made the trip the most enjoyable
was the amazing Texas hospitality for
everywhere you went everyone greeted
you with a wholehearted smile and a hello.
We had lunch in a busy restaurant called
the Green Pickle Café. Everyone in there
began talking to us from all around. From
the table next to us came the comment,
“Why I remember my first hamburger
costing 17 cents.” Then another table
asked where we were from, and then a
conversation about Dallas started up. We
heard about the 50th wedding anniversary
that was to be celebrated the next week-
end and the same couple told us about the
wonderful water that they got from their
wells. Now I am wondering, maybe there is
magic in that water! Everywhere you went
it seemed like Mayberry from the Andy
Griffith show. Many new best friends were
made in an instant. But I dare not tell them
why I was there and what I did. It was
much nicer just enjoying the happiness
and simplicity of this blast from the past.
The books I received from David exempli-
fied his quest for enlightenment and
spirituality. I am thinking he was attracted
to this town for the reasons I felt while
there. It was like a getaway from all the

issues and problems the world is facing
right now. It was comforting to see people
living together in complete harmony with
simplicity, caring for their fellow human
beings.
David must have somehow known this
mini adventure would be meaningful and
special to me. I came to understand and
realize his truths that he practiced. Deb
told me that he felt it was very important
to give to others, this is why he wanted
his books to go to others who would
enjoy and appreciate them. He had other
book topics willed with their name on the
boxes. She said he was very giving and
that was what David was all about. Also in
his will he arranged for some underprivi-
leged children to receive an education
paid for by him until age 18.
Looking back as my husband and I were
driving, we both commented on how
magical and mystical the day was—
meeting Deb, talking about David and
receiving his beautiful library. He must
have known how I cherish books. It was
like a mystical journey back in time and it
all seemed like a dream. Even the conver-
sations with so many seemed dream-like.
I have my very special friend David
LaGrone to thank for this mystical day of
intrigue for it helped me realize what is
important in this life, the simple happiness
of sharing and giving. The energy I felt in
this sweet little town is something I have
not experienced in so many years from a
simpler time. It was like an escape from
this world. My husband Daniel and I
commented that we couldn’t have had a
better time anywhere in world.
Thank you for everything David, you will
