The benefits of our Zebraluminaires

DW Windsor Zebra luminaires are available ina variety of styles so they can be matched tothe luminaires used elsewhere on the scheme,furthermore we can supply every elementrequired for pedestrian crossing lighting; fromcolumn to Belisa beacon; minimise installationcost and street clutter by positioning the Zebraluminaire on the same column as the Belishaglobe.

These guidance parameters (explored in moredepth in the ILE publication TR12) mean thatthe ideal pedestrian crossing luminaire willdistribute most of its light in a concentratedpattern forward of the luminaire in a highenough beam spread to ensure that thecomplete height of the pedestrian isilluminated.

DW Windsor Zebra Floods offer this idealdistribution and are therefore eminentlysuitable for this application.

Lighting pedestriancrossingsThere are three principle issues to consider

when illuminating a Zebra crossing.

• Making the crossing itself highly visible anddistinguishable from the surrounding road.

• Visibility of pedestrians at the crossing andthrough visibility (to ensure motorists arealso aware of pedestrian activity beyond orin front of the crossing).

• Minimising glare to drivers.

In order to achieve these objectives an appropriateform of supplementary lighting is required.

To ensure that the approaching motorist clearlysees the place where pedestrians are to cross,the lighting must generate a defined luminouspatch of light across the crossing carpet, withclearly delineated edges. Consider also thearea beyond the crossing from the driver’sperspective.The approaches to the crossingmarked by zig zag lines – the controlled area –and the adjacent footways should also beadequately lit; this may be to the appropriateCE or S class. Where the road is lit to an MEclass then the pavements by the controlledarea should be lit to the appropriate S class.

A low mounting height of no more than 4 metresand often around 2.5 metres is usually mostsuitable to create this delineated carpet. Whilea different lamp colour from the surroundingroad lighting is effective in helping highlightthe carpet – for example white light (metalhalide) on the crossing in a yellow light (high-pressure sodium) road installation.

Luminaires need to be as glare free as possibleto ensure maximum through visibility throughthe crossing area – remember pedestrians willoften try to cross short of the crossing itself.Flat glass luminaires are therefore best.

Finally the light distribution from the luminaireitself needs to ensure high levels of verticalilluminance onto the crossing pedestrian toensure that they are visible to approachingmotorists. Because humans are three dimensionalrather than two dimensional, this verticalillumination does not need to fall exclusivelyonto the side of the pedestrian facing the traffic.In falling onto the curved surface facing theluminaire the pedestrian will still be renderedvisible to the motorist).
