125 Years
The Clarkson College tradition of caring traces back to our
beginning in 1888. To celebrate our past, we have outlined some
of our proudest moments in history, our ongoing traditions
and our all-abiding purpose.
In honor of our history and all those who helped shape it,
here’s to 125 years of caring.

Our History
RIGHT REVEREND ROBERT H. CLARKSON FIRST EPISCOPAL BISHOP OF NEBRASKA(1826–1884)
He assumed the duty to lay a foundation of health care
in Nebraska.
1870
MELIORA CLARKSON (1828 –1902)
She forged ahead with the dream of her husband, the late Bishop
Clarkson, and fought to establish a training program for nurses.
1884
CLARKSON’S TRAINING SCHOOL FOR NURSES
We achieved the ultimate milestone in our history when we became
the first school of nursing in the state of Nebraska.
1888
MINERVA M. RYLEY (1875–1971)
She became one of our first graduates on record and earned
herself the honorary title of “Miss. Clarkson” nearly 60 years later.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION CONSTITUTION & BY-LAWS ESTABLISHED
We learned how to treat each departure of our students as a new
opportunity to join together.
1910
BISHOP CLARKSON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL STUDENT NURSES’ RESIDENCE
We have provided circumstances for our students where they can
learn to care not only for the ill but also for one another.

WORLD WAR I RED CROSS PIN
We demonstrated honor and pride when our graduates served as the first
Nebraska Red Cross Nurses in WWI.
1917
We watched ourselves grow year after year, decade after decade.
1930’s
We have always taught our students to care for their patients with
competence and compassion.
1940’s
EVELYN & PETER KIEWIT
They made a generous donation that helped renew the opportunities
for future generations.
1960
We heightened our reputation when we advanced from a school of nursing
to a nationally accredited college.
1982
DR. PATRICIA BOOK PERRY (1924–2011)
She filled our future with promise and hope when she assumed the role as our first president.
1987
CLARKSON COLLEGE VIEW FROM 42ND & DODGE STREETS
We welcomed a new facility and a simplified name.
1992
INITIATION OF ONLINE CLASSES
We made pursuing an education from a distance a possibility.
1998
INTRODUCTION OF GATEWAY TO SUCCESS MINORITY NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
We increased the opportunities for minorities in the nursing field.
2000
DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM
We instilled a commitment to amend humanity within our community
through service-learning.
2002
ADDITION OF STUDENT CENTER, SUCCESS CENTER, HOWARD HALL & RESIDENCE HALL
We expanded our campus with a variety of new facilities
and services.
2004
ESTABLISHMENT OF CLARKSON SERVICE LEAGUE HERITAGE GARDEN
We received an endowment to build a garden dedicated to those
for whom we are grateful.
2006
PRESIDENT DR. LOUIS BURGHER LEADS FIRST ANNUAL STRATEGIC PLANNING SESSION
He fostered a course of action to address our challenges
and discover our opportunities as one unified body.

We received a sizable contribution that allowed for the development
and relocation of a new library.

We gather together at the start of each academic year to
honor our history, successes and new beginnings.

We adopted the Maltese Cross as a symbol of protection and a badge of honor in carrying out our Mission.

We crowned our first ever “Miss Clarkson” in 1943. The annual
tradition continues today and also honors a “Mr. Clarkson.”

We hold pinning (and previously capping) ceremonies to declare
the power and proficiency of our graduates to provide ethical
and compassionate health care.

We opened our minds to the unknown when we
set sail on our first excursion overseas in 1999.
