Primary Source
A document, book, article, etc. written during the time period by a person who experienced or witnessed the event.
Autobiography, diary entry, government document, etc.
Secondary Source
A document, book, article, etc. written after an event occurred or about an event that happened in the past. The author did not experience the event.
Biography, text book, encyclopedia
Credible and Reliable Sources
Credible and Reliable RequirementsThe author uses citations or references
Bibliography or works citedThe author does not contradict themselvesThe author agrees or references other credible sourcesThe author has a good reputation
Avoid tabloids or Wikipedia!
Historical Circumstances
Political, social, or economic events can affect the opinions or viewpoints of the author.
The author's audience may be to a specific historical idea or group of people
