Th e men’s and women’s cross country teams enter

the 2012 season each with a ton of runners

returning as IUP looks to be one of the most

experienced schools in the PSAC.

Entering his fourth season, head coach Joey Zins

welcomes back 25 total runners - 15 women and

10 men - as he lost just fi ve student-athletes from a

year ago.

Included on the list of 10 men’s runners is

junior Victor Costello, who took home all-region

honors with a 12th place fi nish at the NCAA

regional championships in Slippery Rock a year

ago. Costello was the top IUP runner in 2011,

pacing the Crimson Hawks in each of the six events

he competed in, including the PSAC

championships in Mansfi eld.

Costello also racked up four top-25 fi nishes.

Sophomore Ray Ofman was another consistent

runner for the Crimson Hawks in 2011, notching

six team top fi ve fi nishes and one top 25 overall

fi nish.

Other runners coming back are seniors Josh Josen

and Matt Rutt; juniors Pete Iannuzzi, Clinton

Keller and Al Kreis; and sophomores Jarret Cutsail,

Trevor Howard and Tim Lynch.

For the women, senior Alyssa Taddie and juniors

Katie Koenig and Steph Beaudette all return.

Koenig paced the Crimson Hawks in four of her six

races last year while Taddie posted six team top fi ve

fi nishes and Beaudette had four.

Always among the top fi ve in team fi nishes, Taddie,

Koenig and Beaudette each had one overall top 10

and two overall top 25 fi nishes in 2011.

Th ese are just three of IUP’s 15 returning runners,

which also include seniors Antonnette Acosta, Jane

Looby and Katie Peters; juniors Katie

Barrett, Jackie Beisel, Kristen Donaldson and

Samantha Th ompson; and sophomores Kayla

Edwards, Margo Filippi, Alison Gusew, Lauren

Lyons and Yelena Share. Six incoming freshmen

will add to an already large and talented team.

Th e bar has been set high for the Crimson Hawks

as they head into 2012 as they return 12 starters

from last year’s PSAC semifi nal team. Th ird year

head coach Gary Agard has a host of young

talent as 10 of those 12 returning starters are either

sophomores or juniors.

One of those two seniors is Anouk Sickman, a

two-time All-American who is fourth all-time at

IUP with 35 career goals. A force from her midfi eld

position, she had fi ve multi-goal and fi ve four-point

games last year to lead IUP with 43 points.

She fi nished fourth in the powerful PSAC in goals

(17), assists (9) and points per game (2.26).

Senior Erin Shirk moves up to foward this year

after earning All-PSAC West recognition at mid-

fi eld a year ago. Fourth on the team in scoring with

nine points on one goal and seven assists last year,

her numbers will almost certainly go up in 2012.

Junior Keira Huntsman also moves up to foward

this year while junior Brielle Mackey and

sophomores Ashley and Paige Mosner also look to

help the scoring. Bloomsburg transfer Nicole Bruce

adds more talent.

Junior Jillian Duld, last year’s third leading scorer,

returns at midfi eld alongside Sickman. Th e reliable,

multi-dimensional threat started all 19 games last

season, fi nishing with six goals and six assists.

In addition to Duld, there is a host of talent

returning in the middle for the Crimson Hawks.

Casey McGowan, last year’s PSAC West Freshman

of the Year comes back after starting all 19 games.

She’ll be joined by juniors Angel Bohn, Dani

Edwards and Nicole Grimaldi.

Moving back to the defensive end, junior Melanie

Simmons returns after anchoring IUP with 19

starts a year ago. Kate Bruce, Nicole’s sister, also

transferred from Bloomsburg and adds depth along

with sophomore Paige Klouser.

Two sophomore starters return in the cage as Sarah

Lemieux and Brittany Varacallo alternated starts a

year ago. Together they combined for 116 saves and

a .690 save percentage. For her eff orts, Lemieux

garnered All-PSAC honors.

2012 will mark the second year under head coach

Curt Cignetti after a successful debut last season.

Cignetti instilled a hard-nosed approach on both

sides of the ball that helped IUP to a 7-3 overall

record, including a 5-2 mark in the PSAC West.

15 starters return from that squad, including seven

on each side of the ball as the Crimson Hawks will

have the leadership, talent and continuity to

succeed in 2012.

Th e strength off ensively will again be the running

game, as senior running back Harvie Tuck will be

led by six off ensive linemen with extensive starting

experience, including junior off ensive tackle Byron

Dovales. A two-time All-PSAC West selection,

Tuck is fourth all-time at IUP with 2,681 rushing

yards. Junior guards Nick Carnicella and Mike

Charmo and sophomore Matthew Sasson also

return from last year’s starting off ensive line.

Senior Pat Smith is one of two experienced quar-

terbacks returning for IUP, as the passing game will

look to succeed with the help of a deep threat Pat

Brewer. Th e deep threat led the Crimson Hawks

in all major receiving categories, averaging over 25

yards on his 20 receptions. Juniors Terrill Barnes

and Ben Simmen also return as IUP will look to get

additional help from Pitt transfer Salath Williams,

who will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Senior Johnny Franco returns to lead a defense that

fi nished last year ranked fi rst in the PSAC by giving

up just 13.6 points per game. Th e ball hawk will

again look to make big plays from his safety spot.

He’ll be joined in the defensive backfi eld by junior

Terrell Holloway (formerly Terrell Washington)

and sophomore Jerrell McFadden, who racked up

70 tackles a year ago. Up front, junior ends Errol

Brewster and Larry Gooden will provide the pass

rush while senior Carl Th ornton is proven with 32

career starts and 158 tackles.

Junior Alexander Berdahl returns at linebacker and

he’ll be helped by another Pitt transfer in junior

Carl Fleming.

Handling the kicking chores for the Crimson

Hawks will be sophomore Brett Ullman, who

earned all-region honors last year after converting

10-of-11 fi eld goals and 33-of-34 extra points.

PREVIEW

Th e Crimson Hawks will look to continue their run

of success as they go for their ninth straight PSAC

tournament appearance in 2012. Under the

guidance of veteran head coach Adel Heder, IUP

has notched winning seasons 10 of the last 11

years, including nine straight.

Returning from last year’s PSAC quarterfi nal squad

are 22 players, including seven starters. Th e 2011

team went an impressive 9-3-2 in conference play

to earn the fi fth seed in the tournament.

Th e defense will be key for the Crimson Hawks this

year as they return goalie Mara Hricik. Th e junior

scored shutouts in four of her eight starts, boasting

an impressive 0.80 goals against average in 12 total

games played. In her over 1000 minutes played

she let just nine goals pass and had an .812 save

percentage.

Freshman Ashley Schoellkopf will also look for

playing time in goal.

Junior defenders Kaitlyn Kaminski and Nicole

Miller will again work to keep opposing off enses at

bay, as they helped IUP holds opponents to just 22

goals all season.

As the games wore on last year, the IUP defense got

better, allowing just eight goals on 86 shots in the

second half of games.

Senior Kelly Faller and junior Alex Tierney will also

look to help out on the back end.

Looking to replace the lost goal scoring from last

year will be a trio of junior forwards in Tonya

Fabian, Lindsay Lobevero and Kelsey Fisher.

Combining for four goals and nine assists a year

ago, the off ense will revolve around those three this

year as their production will skyrocket.

Th e leading returning goal scorer, Fisher threaded

the net three times last year, with two of those

being game-winners. Fabian was second on the

team last year with fi ve assists while Lobevero

added a pair of assists and a goal.

Also looking to contribute off ensively is senior

Sharee McCarty and juniors Anna-Kate DePaolo,

Michelle Grozinsky and Mandy Cerminara.

Th e Crimson Hawks will look to bounce back in

2012, as head coach Zach Shaver welcomes back

seven players with extensive playing experience,

including fi ve starters from last year.

Leading that group will be senior Morgan Cerveny,

who fi nished third on the team with 203 kills. She

had eight double-digit kill matches, going for a

season-high 14 against Seton Hill and Mercyhurst,

and was second on the team with 66 blocks. She

enters this year with 587 career kills, easily within

reach of IUP’s all-time top 10.

Newcomers Aubree Frye and Stephanie Kruzynski

will also look to see time on the right side.

Th e four underclassmen starters from last year

boasts IUP’s talented young team. Of the squad’s 19

players, 12 are underclassmen, including

sophomores Brooke Bailey, Lauren Hester, Carissa

Miara and Beth Sova.

Miara stepped in from day one to guide the IUP

off ense from the setter position, averaging nearly

eight assists per set as she totaled 813 for the

season. Senior Sarah Alman will provide

experience at the position.

Hester, a big-time leaper - along with Bailey -

combined for 316 kills a year ago as both were

off ensive threats from the outside hitter position.

Hester proved to be multi-faceted, as she’s the

team’s returning leader in kills (224), aces (35), and

digs (217), and added 21 blocks.

Senior Carly Kowalski and sophomore Ericka Lentz

provide depth at the position, along with freshmen

Sarah Smiley and Lisa Kissell.

Sova provided the defense at middle blocker,

leading IUP with 94 total blocks last year. She

fi nished the season with 184 kills and a .233 hitting

percentage. Also looking to see time in the middle

is junior Ellen Fordon, sophomore Diane Killinger

and freshman Meghan Schneider.

Battling for time at libero will be four players,

including three newcomers. Senior Amanda

Palmer has seen reserve action the last two seasons

while IUP welcomes junior transfer Kelly Barnes to

the team. Freshmen Joie Hrapla and Jenna Veverka

will also compete.
