THE COMPETITION The Night Rover Challenge asks entrepreneurs to create an energy storage system that will allow a simulated lunar rover to operate on stored solar energy through 14 days of sheer darkness (the lunar night). Storage systems will need to achieve 300 to 500 wh/kg and provide that power through 3 lunar cycles. The draft rules are now available online for public comment.
EDUCATION In addition to the technical competition, the Night Rover Challenge is creating a robust education program to inspire students to become innovative, self-driven learners interested in science, technology, and invention. Students will be able to participate in online activities and hands-on events with museums across the country. Educational activities will begin in the fall of 2012.
THE PRIZE$1.5 Million is being provided through NASA’s Office of Centennial Challenges. The 1st place Award up to $1 Million, 2nd place $300,000, and 3rd place $200,000.
