Stronger TogetherFrom the Chair & Executive Director
In fiscal year 2015, the value of Wisconsin’s Alliance for Land Trusts was thrown into sharp relief. We faced unprecedented threats, and, together with Wisconsin’s land trust community, we are turning tough challenges into opportunities.
Through a cooperative, coordinated effort, Gathering Waters’ staff and board members, land trust leaders, and the broader conservation community, tirelessly defended the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program. By working together during the state budget process, we prevailed, protecting the Stewardship Program from virtual elimination and preserving a bulk of the funding at $33 million annually, with $7 million per year available for land trust projects.
In your community and across Wisconsin, the Stewardship Program supports jobs, benefits local economies, protects our water resources, enhances quality of life, and guarantees places to hunt, hike, fish and explore close to home. Without a Stewardship Program, we would all feel the impacts.
Unfortunately, while Stewardship was saved, Gathering Waters took a direct hit in the state budget. The capacity grant, which has provided significant resources for the services we offer Wisconsin’s land trusts, was eliminated by a veto.
But we aren’t going anywhere. Our mission as Wisconsin’s Alliance for Land Trusts is too important. And as part of the alliance, you can help. Please consider a special gift to Gathering Waters today, to ensure a strong future for the land trust community in Wisconsin and the continued protection of the places you love and benefit from in countless ways.

July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015During Fiscal Year 2015:
Residents have cleaner air and water because of protected wetlands
and forests.
Plants and animals are more resilient to changing conditions.
Outdoor places and adventures are available close to home, accessible to people from all walks of
life, ages, and interests.
Thousands of jobs and billions of dollars are generated annually
through tourism, outdoor recreation, forestry,

“Gathering Waters is a critical resource for the River Revitalization Foundation, Milwaukee’s urban rivers land
trust. Through our membership with them, we gain a statewide network for policy, training, and retreats that strengthens not only our staff and organization but the
land trust movement as a whole”
Kimberly Gleffe, Executive Director, River Revitalization Foundation
“Gathering Waters provides an incredible amount of value to Wisconsin land trusts through their work in policy advocacy, organizational development, and community of practice. As a smaller land trust, Tall Pines has been extremely fortunate to be able to call on Gathering Waters’ skilled staff to assist us with all stages of our development and with our path to accreditation. The fact that GW provides us with a larger network to draw from—a community of practice—where we can learn from our peers, is invaluable.”
Susan Buchanan, Executive Director, Tall Pines Conservancy
“Gathering Waters is a remarkably effective voice for all of us.”
Bob Fitzwilliam, Executive Director, West Wisconsin Land Trust
“Gathering Waters has provided guidance to Glacial Lakes Conservancy in so many ways—training for our staff and board, networking with peers, tools to prepare us for accreditation, and advocacy for our Knowles-Nelson Stewardship grant. Land trusts depend on the knowledgeable staff at Gathering Waters to build a strong environment of land conservation throughout Wisconsin.”
Mary Piehl, Executive Director, Glacial Lakes Conservancy
“Gathering Waters plays a vital role in bringing all of Wisconsin’s land trusts together for opportunities
to learn, share, and network. They offer a camaraderie and sense of community amongst Wisconsin land trusts
that no one else can provide.”
Carol Abrahamzon, Executive Director, Mississippi Valley Conservancy

“I have learned about the work of so many of our great Wisconsin land trusts, their unique conser-vation successes, and the people behind those organizations and successes. I wish I could provide support to each of the land trusts throughout our great State, but having a young family that just isn’t possible, so that is why I have pledged a planned gift to Gathering Waters. This way I can help provide, in my small way, support for all land trusts through the significantly impactful and lasting work of Gathering Waters. I make this gift in hopes that my children and their children will have a beautiful, healthy, and vibrant Wisconsin to call home – that is the legacy that Wisconsin’s land trusts are working to ensure.”
