Sensible HabitatsSENSIBLE HABITATS utilizes a cooperative learning model. Lessons are organized so students can build on the knowledge they have already gained.
Pre-visit activities get students thinking about the needs of living things. In the classroom, the teacher acts as a facilitator while the students formulate their own ideas about life and habitats.
In the Presidio, students continue their inquiry of living things and their needs. They create their own criteria for living and non-living things, then, through further activities, examine their standards and re-evaluate their ideas.
Post-visit activities allow students to further examine their criteria and assumptions for living and non-living things and habitats. Through creative art, they demonstrate what they learned and how they learned during their national park experience.

KIDS on TrailsKIDS ON TRAILS on the Ecology Trail explores the park’s outdoor natural resources. The program encourages site-based learning, investigation and recreation through an introductory slideshow in the classroom and guided walk along the Ecology Trail. Students use their senses and observation skills to see, hear, feel, and record their learning and experiences. Kids on Trails offers fun, trail-based activities that introduce the concept of ecology through observation and documentation of flora and fauna, and patterns and cycles in nature including weather and biodiversity. Concepts such as habitat, survival, and human impact are also explored. The program culminates at Inspiration Point, a scenic overlook along the Ecology Trail, with stunning views of the bay and the Presidio. Grade(s): K-2

Thingamajigs & WhatchamacallitsTHINGAMAJIGS & WHATCHAMACALLITS introduces students to the field of archaeology and provides them with an opportunity to explore past cultures by comparing and contrasting artifacts. Students learn the basics of archaeology and then excavate simulated dig boxes filled with replica artifacts. In small groups, the students classify their artifact assemblage according to color, size, material, and function. Lastly, they use their observation and inference skills to determine which culture (Ohlone, Spanish, or American Military) their assemblage came from. Teachers have an option to extend the program by including a nature hike where students learn about native plants and their uses.

Tennessee Hollow Watershed TrekkersPlace-based learning enhances classroom learning. In this program, learn why watersheds are so valuable to Presidio plants, animals, and people. The Presidio’s natural areas are an extraordinary educational resource for lessons on plants, wildlife, geology, and ecology.
The TENNESSEE HOLLOW WATERSHED includes natural springs and ponds, coastal scrub, serpentine grassland, coastal redwood, and sand dune habitats, in addition to the Presidio’s historic forest. Newly restored to interpret a rich natural and cultural history, this valley provides immersion in nature and wildlife viewing opportunities.
The Tennessee Hollow Watershed Trekkers program includes the following experiences:
• A fun, sensory hike where students journal as they learn about unique native plant and wildlife species
• Exploration of the concept of watersheds
• Participation in an environmental service project where students are engaged in improving the park for plants, wildlife, and humans
• Hands-on activities where students explore the biological relationships that make up our local ecosystem

Excavate HistoryEXCAVATE HISTORY focuses on the Spanish colonial era and teaches students how archaeology can help us discover more about the people who once lived at El Presidio de San Francisco. Through a series of hands-on activities, students investigate how the arrival of the Spanish colonists changed the natural and cultural landscape of the area. In small groups, students rotate through three stations:
1. Making Adobe Bricks – Students learn how the colonists built their houses.
2. Hiking the Ecology Trail – Students uncover what the landscape of the Presidio once looked like and imagine living here at the time of colonization.
3. Cataloging an Artifact – Students analyze a real ceramic artifact in the Presidio Archaeology Lab and interpret its past function.

Green Thumbs UpAwaken the field ecologist in your students! Native plant nurseries represent the root of park restoration work. We grow nearly 60,000 plants each year at the Presidio Nursery to promote biological diversity. During a visit to the Presidio Nursery, students help grow California indigenous plants destined for park restoration projects. They will delve into biodiversity, adaptation, pollination, and the plant growing cycle.

Point of InquiryFort Point, an enduring symbol of Gold Rush San Francisco, is the perfect site for history sleuths to imagine, investigate, and pose questions of who, what, where, when, and why. Students explore the fort as they formulate “information questions” and “questions for deeper meaning.” Through both individual and small group work, students construct their own interpretation of the significance of Fort Point and the era it represents.
Pre-visit activities introduce students to the people who lived near Fort Point and some of the familiar landmarks they will encounter when they visit.
During their visit they see Fort Point in its geographic and ecological context and experience their national park as a resource for learning, recreation, and fun. After the fort exploration they head into the natural setting around them to see trails, plants, and animals that are native to the area. They also learn Leave No Trace ethics through fun games and activities.

Living PoetryLIVING POETRY focuses on the young soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for their country through the poem “The Young Dead Soldiers” by Archibald MacLeish. This moving and heart-felt program gives students the opportunity to better understand the outcomes of war, experience the poem firsthand, and connect personally with soldiers who have been laid to rest. This program includes a visit to the historic San Francisco National Cemetery, located in the Presidio. Students work collaboratively while making connections and comparisons to the soldiers’ and their own lives.

Project WISESpending one afternoon a week for an entire school year conducting field studies in the Presidio, Project WISE (Watersheds Inspiring Student Education) engages students from environmental science classes at Galileo Academy of Science and Technology. Project WISE enables youth to discover their impact on the natural world and realize their own potential to engage in scientific practice. WISE students learn by conducting scientific investigations using the national park as their classroom and laboratory. WISE students also design and execute science research projects on topics that are relevant to their communities. They present their findings to professional scientists, resource managers, teachers, families, and other youth.
Field-based short courses in environmental science are also available. Teachers who are interested should contact WISE staff and they will be able to customize an environmental science program. They will work with the teacher’s schedule and cover topics appropriate for their class. This could be a concentrated study such as a multi-session unit on water quality or a series of field trips on a variety of topics throughout the semester or year. The number of field studies trips to the Presidio typically ranges from one to six sessions.

Camping at the Presidio (CAP)Imagine spending the night in a national park with your students. The Rob Hill Campground – nestled in a eucalyptus grove in the Presidio – is one of the park’s hidden gems. The only camping facility in San Francisco, Rob Hill is a fantastic venue for outdoor learning and fun, bringing the experience of a national park to students within a safe setting without leaving the city. All camping equipment (including tents, sleeping bags, pads, and cooking gear) is provided.
The CAP program serves several thousand students annually, providing meaningful gateway camping experiences to children and youth who traditionally have not visited national parks. Teachers who are interested in participating in the program must first apply and meet eligibility requirements. Participation in an overnight CAP leadership training is required before a teacher can schedule a camping trip for their class.
