2016 LEAGUE CHANGES

WOODLANDWABBITS

After an up-and-down 2015 campaign, the Penguins look to change their luck by turning to their lucky wabbit feet.

The Woodland Wabbits will be looking to jump over their opponents in 2016.

QUAYSIDEKAYS

After winning two consecutive European Titles, the Falcons have renamed themselves for the 2016

season. The team is hoping that this change will bring all the luck they need to claim their first BFL title.

MINNESOTAHUSKIES

Coming off of another title, the 4-time League Champion Huskies have

updated their logo for 2016 and added black to their color scheme.

Page 19: 2016 BFL Yearbook

2015 LEAGUE CHANGES

#1 - The true-champion rule

The Huskies and Falcons should have met in BFL Bowl X; however, the Husky-Backs played the Falco-Gents when

teams combined to form all-star rosters for the game. To avoid this in 2016, the league will observe an “undroppable

players” list and will implement a trade-deadline prior to the start of the playoffs. Teams will still be allowed to drop

“undroppable” players in the case of injury with LM approval.

#2 - scoring made easy

Over the years, ESPN Standard Scoring has become complicated, with players earning additional points for stats

like +40 yard touchdowns, total passing attempts, 300+ yards passing, 100+ yards running/receiving, etc. With the PPR

format of the BFL, scores of games have gradually increased, and in 2015, eleven players scored over 300 points. For 2016, the BFL scoring system has been reset to Basic PPR (See full

scoring breakdown on page ).

#3 - the best offense…

…is a good Defense. Or at least it might be in 2016. While offensive players have been reset to Basic PPR, defensive

players will be receiving a boost (see breakdown).

DOUG BALDWIN, WRBaldwin has the trust of Russell Wilson and exploded late in the year. Look for a big 2016.

DAVID JOHNSON, RBJohnson took over the starting RB position late in the year and dominated. Year 2 will be even bigger.

AMARI COOPER, WRCooper and Carr quickly became a dynamic-duo in Oakland, and will continue to develop in 2016.

ADRIAN PETERSON, RBPeterson had a solid season, but at 31 he’s beginning to show signs of deterioration. Start looking for younger backs.

MATT FORTE, RBForte was injured and outplayed in 2015 and his better days are likely far behind him after a move to the Jets.

PHILIP RIVERS, QBRivers may still serve as a spot starter, but his days as a top-flight QB are coming to a close.

Looking at Running Back? Buyer beware!! Only 3 of the top 15 backs taken in 2015 finished in the top 20 at the position in PPG. While the position is vital, it’s more likely that a young upstart will become your leading rusher. With a plethora of QBs to have and the parity at TE, success in 2016 will depend on the depth of your receivers.

2016 draft preview

Should you draft a RB or a WR? First-round QB? Two-y e a r s o f a n a l y t i c s h a v e revealed certain trends about the BFL which will help you win the league in 2016. So what are they?

1. RB is a fickle position.

In 2014, RB starters averaged 14.2 PPG, and 13.4 in 2015. There were also 6 above-average starters both years. The problem? None of the 2014 stars posted above-average seasons in 2015. Injury had the most to do with it; Bell, Forte, Lynch, & Foster all spent time on the IR. Expect more unpredictability at RB in 2016.

2. WR > TE

In 2015, the average starter at WR was 4 PPG better than the average TE. Even an average WR was 2+ PPG better than the top TE. Stock-up on WRs before looking to TE.

3. This is a QB friendly league

Have to have the star-QB to win the league? Not even close. QB had the smallest difference in average PPG with all 8 starters averaging over 20 PPG. There are studs (Wilson, Brady, Newton), but you can win with just about any QB.

Weekly match-ups are a better predictor of who

your QB should be.

4. Free-Agents bring victories

In 2015, 35% of the above-average players

went undrafted. RB got the biggest boost from free-agency (Freeman, Williams, Woodhead, Martin) proving that you can wait to find studs at the position. TE also had undrafted stars (Barnidge, Walker). WR is the only position that didn't have an undrafted player crack the average starter list, proving you need to go after the big names early and often.

wide receivers

will be at a premium in

2016

Page 27: 2016 BFL Yearbook

STAR POWER Everyone expects their starters at each position to be stars, but with 8 league members, are there enough studs to go around? Just how many stars are there anyway? There was no shortage of firepower in 2015 with 20 players ranking above league-average at their position. One of the reasons for the increase in stars, however, is the drastic drop in depth at many positions. While WR and RB make up the majority of the stars, they also have the most drastic drops in PPG between the average starter and the top position player:

QB: C. Newton, T. Brady, R. Wilson RB: D. Freeman, A. Peterson, D. Martin, D. Woodhead, L. Miller, D. Williams WR: A. Brown, J. Jones, B. Marshall, D. Hopkins, O. Beckham, A. Robinson TE: D. Walker, R. Gronkowski, J. Reed, G. Olsen, G. Barnidge

CHAMPIONSBUILDING

TIGHT-END: The core of a playoff team is consistent play at the TE position. Gronkowski, Olsen, and Reed each finished in the top-5 at TE and each ended up the starter on playoff teams. The position is one of the few where, if you have a good one, you can ignore match-ups. The position is thin, however, so look to draft a top-flight TE in the earlier rounds.

RUNNING BACKS: Having a stud runner is no guarantee of a playoff run. In 2015, only five RBs were in the top 50 in PPG average. Of those five, only one (Williams) was on a playoff roster. A star runner is certainly a luxury, but the starting RBs on the playoff teams were all found through free-agency during the season. Draft your RBs carefully in the mid-rounds.

Page 29: 2016 BFL Yearbook

QUARTERBACK: While playoff teams usually have an all-star QB, the parity at the position, and its point-friendly nature, is causing a reduction in value at the position. The days where one QB stays your starter are gone. In 2015, nearly half of the top 50 in PPG were QBs. In 2016, draft your QBs late and rotate them game-by-game based on the best match-ups.

RECEIVERS: Wide-outs are the hands of your team, and it’s impossible to do anything well without your hands. In a PPR league, WRs have the potential to score bigger than any other position; however, they are also the most dependent on good QB play. Make sure you have a deep roster at the position by drafting early and often.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Defense and Kickers are the least valued positions in the league, but Defense will be receiving a boost with adjusted scoring in 2016 and teams that get more sacks and touchdowns will be more highly valued. The top defenses are now worth the same as a top-flight TE, meaning they may be worth an earlier draft pick.

#3 - odell beckham, jr., wr Giants The Thundering Herd rode Beckham to a league points title and will likely hope

to recapture that magic in 2016. After finishing 6th in receiver PPG, OBJ will look to explode in his 3rd season.

#4 - julio jones, wr Atlanta Consistency, consistency, consistency. Jones has consistently been one of the

league’s top WRs, something the Moose can desperately use in 2016. Expect him to go here.

2015 mock draft

#5 - russell wilson, qb seahawks In 2015, Wilson lead the Leatherbacks to a 10-5 record and to the playoffs.

Expect the Backs to eagerly resign the franchise signal-caller in the first-round.

#6 - cam newton, qb panthers It might be a QB heavy league, but there is something to be said for drafting the 2015 league MVP in the first-round. Look for the Wabbits to lock-up Newton

here and move on to WRs.

#7 -devonte Freeman, RB falcons The Kays know that poor RB play can kill you in the playoffs, so look for them to

draft a stud early in the draft. Freeman will benefit again from a Shanahan offense the rolls-out top RBs.

#8 - ROB GRONKOWSKI, TE PATRIOTS Gronk Wars Episode II: The Return of Gronk. At least, that’s what the Gents are hoping for at the end of the 1st round. Look for them to lock up TE and nab a

WR as the draft snakes.

PREDICTION: AARON RODGERS

PREDICTION: EDDIE LACY

PREDICTION: MATT FORTE

PREDICTION: MARSHAWN LYNCH

THE PICK: AARON RODGERS

THE PICK: LEVEON BELL

THE PICK: EDDIE LACY

THE PICK: MARSHAWN LYNCH

The 2015 #1 Pick was a no-brainer, and the Falcons went with Aaron Rodgers as predicted. Rodgers had an up and down year, but ultimately lead the Falcons to their second-straight BFL Bowl.

The Huskies were predicted to grab a bruiser with their pick, and they did; however, the eventual league-champions decided to grab the PPR friendly Bell over expected pick Eddie Lacy.

With the Huskies passing on Eddie Lacy, the Gentlemen were happy to forego their expected pick of Matt Forte and grab the up-and-coming back. Both went on to have underwhelming years.

The Knights wanted Lynch coming into the draft, and the early run on RBs reinforced their decision. They grabbed the Seahawks’ back, who struggled to stay on the field all year.

PREDICTION: LEVEON BELL

PREDICTION: ANDREW LUCK

PREDICTION: ANTONIO BROWN

PREDICTION: ROB GRONKOWSKI

THE PICK: ANDREW LUCK

THE PICK: ADRIAN PETERSON

THE PICK: ANTONIO BROWN

THE PICK: MATT FORTE

The 2014 League-MVP was too tempting for the Moose with the 5th overall pick. With the top RBs gone, the Moose went with the young signal-caller, who suffered from a Junior slump.

With the only true surprise in the round, the defending champions decided to draft the aging Peterson 6th overall. Peterson went on to finish 2nd in RB scoring.

The Leatherbacks had their eyes on Antonio Brown from the word go and happily took him 7th overall. Brown earned the pick by finishing 3rd amongst all players in PPG.

The Penguins were not expecting Forte to fall into their laps with the last pick in the round. Gronkowski ended up lasting until pick 3 - 19. Forte spent most of the year on the IR.

2015 draft recap

Fantastic fantasy

The BFL uses a unique scoring system, utilizing a true PPR and unbalanced touchdown format. The rosters are equally unique, with two WRs, one TE, and one Flex position. If that wasn’t enough for you, the

BFL is increasing its Defensive scoring system in 2016. The BFL isn’t the only unique way to play Fantasy Football.

1. KEEPER LEAGUES

Keeper leagues are the most similar to being a real-life NFL GM. In their first year, Keeper Leagues hold an all-player draft, much like regular leagues do each year. These players become their core team, which they keep every year thereafter. Every year after, the league holds a two-round rookie draft. The draft-stakes are h igher in Keeper Leagues, as one bad year can effect your team for years after. Owners s w e a r b y k e e p e r leagues and love that they can follow their players for years.

2. SALARY-CAP LEAGUES

Another unique way to play is in a salary-cap league. Each year, players are assigned a dollar value (Cam Newton $50; Alfred Morris $5). Owners then have to draft the ir rosters whi le pay ing attention to the league salary cap, which ranges from $200-500 depending on player values. There are also salary-cap penalties for releasing players.

3. DUAL-WINS LEAGUES

Ever frustrated by the fact that you can score 160 points and lose while another team can score 95 and win? Not in these leagues! In this format, teams are awarded wins and loses for their weekly match-ups and for their total points. In an 8 team league, the top-four scoring teams each week

receive a victory, meaning you can go 2-0, 1-1, or 0-2 on

any given week. Other leagues have adopted the true-victory system where there are no weekly matches and w i n s a r e aw a r d e d

weekly to the top-half of the league in points.

4. HEAD-COACH LEAGUES

In these leagues, owners draft a head-coach, each of whom comes with a different bonus. For example, Gary Kubiak’s team would get 5 points for rushing TDs and Rex Ryan’s team would get 3 points for sacks. In this format, your HC can enhance your strengths (Kubiak with Pe terson) or cover for a weakness (Ryan with the Colts).
