This is the most common traverse on Mt. Kenya. Unless preferred, camping is not necessary as accommodation is available in mountain huts throughout the trip. Although the trip offers reasonably good chances of reaching the summit, those who may not manage the challenge can cross over via the easier summit circuit trail and join up with other hikers at the Mackinder's Camp or consider adding on a day at Shipton's 4200m to acclimatize better ahead of the summit. Day 1 Nairobi – Mt Kenya Morning transfer from Nairobi, arriving at Naromoru River Lodge for lunch. Then drive to Sirimon Park gate (2600m). On completion of park entry formalities, begin a 3-4 hour hike through forest. Ascend 700m through the bamboo, rosewood and heather zones to Old Moses camp. The forest and bamboo are home to hundreds of buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks and a plethora of bird species. Dinner and overnight at Old Moses Camp (3300m) Day 2 A long day leading to the base of the high peaks. Today's trek is largely through the moorlands and the Mackinder Valley, with good views of the main peaks and a brief stopover for picnic lunch. Total walking time is approx. 7 hours gaining 900m in altitude. Dinner and Overnight at Shipton's Hut (4200m) Day 3 Pre-dawn attempt of the summit starts at 0300hrs and you hike for about 3 hours up steep scree slopes and across rugged rocks up to Pt. Lenana (4985m), the hikers' summit. Then down through Lewis Glacier up to the Austrian hut to join to the Naromoru track and descend for 2 hours to Mackinder's camp for breakfast then have the rest of the day at leisure. Dinner and overnight at Mackinder's Camp (4300m) Day 4 Leaving early, you gradually descend for 4-5 hours through the moorlands and the lower vertical bog up to the Met Station, from where you walk down on a wide dirt road leading to the Naromoru Park gate (2600m) where you meet our vehicle. You are then transferred back to Alliance Naromoru River Lodge for a hot shower and lunch then back to Nairobi

Highly recommended for unseasoned high altitude trekkers as it offers maximum chances of acclimatisation, virtually guaranteeing successful ascent to the summit. From Shipton's, you skirt the high peaks to the east, bypassing Kami and Two-tarn huts as you marvel at the splendid view of the rocky towers, tarns and suspended glaciers of the west face of Batian peak to attempt the summit from Mackinders camp in the Teleki valley and eventually descending through the Sirimon.
Day 1 Nairobi – Mt Kenya Transfer from Nairobi to Alliance Naromoru River Lodge for lunch. Then on to Sirimon Park gate (2600m). On completion of park entry formalities, have picnic lunch then begin a 3-4 hour hike through forest. Ascend 700m bypassing the bamboo, rosewood and heather zones to Old Moses camp. The forest and bamboo are home to hundreds of buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks and a plethora of bird species. Dinner and overnight at Old Moses Camp (3300m) Day 2 After an early breakfast commence a 6-7 hour trek to Shipton's camp. The hike is awesome but a good test on individual endurance on the mountain as you cover a 900m. ascent in 6-7 hours. The moorland walk takes you across hills and valleys in the sprawling moorlands where you see several unique and interesting plants and animals including the Giant groundsels and lobelias and the mountain hyrax.Dinner and overnight at Shiptons Camp (4200m) Day 3 Departing at 0800hrs ascend the Hausberg col (4700m) then descend steeply to Hausberg valley and Oblong tarns before making a further steep ascent, crossing huge boulders via Two Tarn on the way to Mackinder's camp (4,300m) which is located along the Naromoru route within the Teleki Valley. Dinner and overnight at Mackinder's Camp (4300m) Day 4 Leaving the camp at 0300hrs you hike up the steep scree slopes and glacier to Point Lenana (4985m), the hikers summit. It is planned that you arrive in time to witness the African Sun rising over the equator, reflect its golden glow on the Majestic peaks of Batian and Nelion. Later descend to Shipton's camp (4200m) for breakfast then relax for the rest of the day. Dinner and overnight at Shipton's Camp (4200m) Day 5 Have early breakfast before your descend to Sirimon roadhead (2600m) in 4-5 hours, from where you connect the vehicle for transfer back to Alliance Naromoru River Lodge for a hot shower and lunch then return to Nairobi.

Day 1 Nairobi – Mt Kenya Transfer from Nairobi to Alliance Naromoru River Lodge on the western slopes of Mt Kenya. Options for horse riding, fishing and forest natural history walk in afternoon. Here at 2,000m you begin acclimatization as you relax and prepare for the trek. Day 2 Short drive, crossing the equator en-route, to the Sirimon Park Gate. Trek up through magnificent virgin forests, bamboo and giant heather zones before reaching the high altitude moorland and our first hut, “Old Moses” at 3,340m. This first day’s gentle trek takes 3-4 hours and climbs 690m. Day 3 Up the spectacular Mackinder Valley past strange giant groundsel and lobelia plants to emerge onto what looks like a set from Star Trek - Shipton’s Camp at 4,236m. A surreal setting below the towering peaks and glaciers, with its resident population of bizarre rock hyrax. Day 4 Early start to reach Pt Lenana at 4,895m for sunrise. The climb starts on frozen scree and continues on a rocky track with some very minor scrambling. With a good moon you barely need a torch. Without a moon, then the pollution-free sky, bang on the equator, gives you as good a view of the stars as almost anywhere on Earth. The climb takes between 3 and 5 hours and to add to the exhilaration Kilimanjaro is usually visible on the horizon. A further 3 hours down to Hall Tarns in the magnificent Gorges Valley for breakfast then a further gentle descent down the Gorges Valley past spectacular chasms, waterfalls and weirdly eroded lava flows to hot showers and log fires in Mt. Kenya huts. Wildlife viewing in evening - often from your cabin window as the elephant and buffalo graze outside! Day 5 Descent on a broad track through bamboo and virgin rain forest to meet vehicles for the return to Nairobi – usually arriving mid to late afternoon

Meet & greet with our representative before transferring to Kampala for dinner and overnight stay (D) Day 2 Kampala - Bwindi Early in the morning set off for Bwindi Impenetrable forest National Park. This safari will take a minimum of nine hours. Make a brief stop at the Equator line. The drive takes you through the grasslands of Ankole, whose common sight are the famous long horned cattle; then to the highlands of Kigezi with their beautifully terraced hills. Break off for lunch at any hotel enroute. Continue with the journey through beautiful scenery and arrive Bwindi National Park in the evening. This park is home of the rare mountain gorillas. Apart from gorillas, there are a wide variety of primates to see including the blue and red tailed monkeys. The forest itself is lush and green and there are streams running through it. You will check in at the lodge for dinner and overnight. (B/L/D) Day 3 Bwindi After breakfast set off early with your guide for gorilla tracking. The thrill of your encounter will erase the difficulties of the potentially strenuous trek. Bring jungle boots and rain jackets because the park is often wet. Return to camp exhilarated to relive the encounter with friends over a drink. Dinner and overnight at a lodge (B/L/D) Day 4 Bwindi – Kampala - Entebbe After breakfast, return to Kampala with lunch enroute. Make a brief stop over at Mpambire Drum makers or at any other crafts display centre along the road, for souvenirs before returning to Kampala.
